OK.. Ok.. Ok... Here's the solution. Got my switches in the mail when I first got home from work
I had read this post previously so I was ready.
Took the switch apart and slid the copper ring down 2 - 3 mm. Tried to find something everyone would have in their home to use for my mod.
Took some Dental Floss and wrapped in under the copper ring three revolutions and slid the ring back up tight against it. Cut it off with a razor blade and then took a BIC lighter and melted the ends down on the floss. (took forever to find a lighter because I quit smoking!!)

Done! The switch now activates just like the original tact switch. Just as eay to push and the floss helped to reduce the throw.

If for some reason you don't have Dental Floss (I don't wanna know) you can use sewing thread. Thread takes about 5 or 6 wraps but instead of cutting and burning, tie it like a pair of shoes and trim the ends.
Two switches / Two Protege's. Tried both methods and it works great.

.

What about using a rubber O ring?

interesting.. I'll have to try that when i get home. ......of course i have dental floss. .....always. Steve's Herculean-thumb-knuckle-pressure trick seems to be working great breaking the switch in, it's Significantly easier then even this morning though that maybe the mad hand strength and calluses i'm building up.. the loosen the adaptor and slowly tighten as it breaks in seems also to work. first time i got it to fire i was accidentally pressing the button while unscrewing the adaptor to replace with the tact switch.

Steve: i'm planning on eventually purchasing a prodigy, (i lusted after the original to be my first mod, just as it was going out of production, curses) does it have the same type of mechanical switch? i.e. same break in period?

Ok just talked to Steve.
I got mine fixed.
Let me try to explain what to do.
1- get a pair of pliers.
2- take the switch out and just have the part with the silver ends to work on.
3- look at the end that does not have the half moon on it, the flat end is what you will be working on.
4- take the pliers and grip the very end (top) of the silver piece and turn it around 90 degrees. that way inside there will now be a round side for the copper band to touch, .....before it was on the flat side.
Only turn one end at a time, not both.
5- put it all back together and try it.
If that didn't work try the other end and turn the bottom silver end piece.
Steve is going to try to get pics of what to do as soon as he can.
I hope I made things clear, if not ask questions.

Thanks BrockJ... Still take a pretty stout push, but at least I can use it now. Hopefully it will loosen up before my thumb breaks.

Thanks again,
Will

Okay, I just tried both of these and using both combined is perfect for me. the switch now has the feather touch that I love. Thank you both, I was starting to get very frustrated. Steve is right, the hit between this and the tact switch, is night and day. Awesome!!!

well i tried steve's fix that Ann posted. Doesn't seem to have changed anything in terms of regularity of firing or required pressure to trigger. I'll try brock's dental floss one as well, just as soon as i get home from work.. Otherwise i guess i'll just have to keep plugging away..

Rezo -- Try the opposite of what Ann says as well. Meaning, spin the other aluminum and leave the other one flat :)

I guess I didn't read the instructions very well. I twisted both posts, so neither is flat. She's hitting like a champ though, so I'm not messing with a good thing:rolleyes:

For Switches shipped Today/Tonight -- Just spent the last hour going over them all. All work Flawlessly :) Now, if for some reason, they don't align properly within your tube and adapter, it won't be the switch at fault - Likely the center post of the adapter.

Just thought I would add that quick note

Good point. I had adjusted the center post on my 510 so there was no gap. I also had to readjust the center post to get my switch working.

EXACTLY Johnny !!! I won't name any names -- cough ... cough ... lotus ... Anyways ... A client that will remain nameless right now, adjusted their 510 center post down. When I put it on the tube with the switch, it make the housing adjust downwards and the button in the middle stuck in place. Put a new/fresh adapter on, that has never been tampered with, and the button works flawlessly!

So, word of wisdom for those that have adjusted your center posts - this could cause the switch to angle oddly within the tube and cause it not to work. If you need help readjusting your center post, I will be happy to take care of it for you :)

Ahem...I got the original short post adapters, Steve. No need to tap them down. The only mod I did was to achieve the opposite, I deepened the slots in one of them to make it draw more like the ones with a longer post!

Does this mean my Protege is finally coming home?

And thanks for not naming any names, Steve!

LOLOLOL ... It is indeed Lotus ... And I double and triple checked your switches ... With your luck, you'll be the first with a fused mechanical switch -- It may not be physically possible, but knowing you lotus, I'm sure you can get it done! Perhaps lotus should be our tester ... putting PV's through the ringer! If it passes the lotus test, it can pass anything !!!!! :D
