Part of the sweetness issue may be related to coil placement. When air strikes your coil and flows OVER it, you get more sweetness and muted flavor. When air is allowed to go UNDER it, you get more sharpness (acidity), TH, and less sweetness. Push that coil up until its center axis is in line with where the screw heads meet the posts.

Does walgreens have the same sterile rolled cotton? We're stopping by there today.
By the time you have rolled a wick from it - your greasy fingers mean it's no longer sterile anyway.
