NICE, RUSS! The man has laid down the law!

Although most of my variations fall nicely inside the true "micro" parameters; we all should bear in mind what tweaking these dimensions is about. Tighter coil IDs will net hotter results (faster kick time), and you can pro'ly go up a tenth or two in resistance. Bigger IDs (and more wraps) will lend them selves to gentler vapes. I, for one, like a tighter ID and a higher coil placement with my lemonade and my "unflavored". With my absynthe, "snow day" and such, I like a bigger ID, and a wrap or two more for a bigger, gentler vape. I also tend to use a thicker wire gauge for the big ones; dropping the resistance, but not intensifying the vape (on account of the bigger coil thing).

ADDIT: It's surprising to see how much difference one or two tenths of a mm can make.

This is excellent info. I really wish all the tweaking info on micros was centralized and stickied somewhere.

Team micro coil.... Okay so I've tried my hand at micro coiling numerous times and just seem to prefer my regular "sloppy" five wraps of 30ga with cotton wick. Am I missing something? I find the vapor production and th better with my sloppy coiling... I feel a little left out like I should be microin' .... I know this hobby is so much personal preference but idk... I do think micros look prettier lol... But for me just not getting the vapor th that I want...

As with all things vaping preference is individual. Whatever works best for you run with it.

Hey man you might want to try building your coil and just put your cotton under the coil, i tried it and its the only way i vape with my igo-l. I use a standard paper clip, unfold it and use 32 kanthal make about 7 wraps, then i tear off a peace of cotton from a cotton ball and lay it under the coil add juice and look for hot spots. Then do some adjusting and your done. Like i said only way to vape on a RBA

Are you building on a rm2?
What size is your air hole?
What is your ideal vape temperature (cool, warm or hot... Or somewhere inbetween)?
Where are you placing the coil in comparison to the air hole?
Do you want huge flavor, huge clouds, huge TH, or a nice balance?
Do you want a sweeter flavor or a sharp flavor with more acidic notes?

Those are just a handful of question a microcoiler could ask you in order to help you design the coil.

Your turn ;)

idk if you're using cotton but if not you should, you might have to boil it as I have had some that taste a bit off on the first 5 or so hits, up to you if it's worth the effort, I think it is.

Anyway, try some 28g 10 wraps around a 1/16th bit, prob about 1.2-1.4 ohms with cotton. I haven't liked the results with any gauge higher than 28, always seems to taste a bit off and a less saturated or full vape. It might be worth it trying some difff gauges w/ diff amount of wraps to find your sweet spot. I did a 16 wrap of 26g that was mighty tasty, but difff folk, diff strokes.

Myself personally, I like a balanced-to-sweet flavor with TH and nic delivery that kicks like a mule. The vape is warm-to-hot (based on how long I wait to hit it after firing).

This is what this untech was waiting for. Please allow me to jump in for a first consultation:

Are you building on a rm2? Yes
What size is your air hole? Standard
What is your ideal vape temperature (cool, warm or hot... Or somewhere inbetween)? In between, probably, doesn't really matter
Where are you placing the coil in comparison to the air hole? Frontlooking - left edge just over air hole
Do you want huge flavor, huge clouds, huge TH, or a nice balance? TH
Do you want a sweeter flavor or a sharp flavor with more acidic notes? Sharp with more acidic notes

Those are just a handful of question a microcoiler could ask you in order to help you design the coil.

Your turn ;)

Sounds like the prototype driver coil would work great for you.

Take this build:

pajybyda.jpg

But instead of being near flat, position it so that the side of the coil by the air hole is raised above the air hole.

The end of the coil between the posts should be practically touching the deck.

When you wick it, do not hang wick from the raised end. Snip it short. Leave a wick tail from the lowered end.

The air will come in and sweep down the bottom of the coil producing heavy base flavor notes and a TH that kicks like an angry mule.

There is a picture of this build somewhere in this thread.

The heat aspect... That's up to you. On a stock air hole, you are leaning more towards a cool-to-warm vape not in the sub-ohm realm.

If you want warm-to-hot, .6-.8ohm with a slightly enlarged air hole.

Try with the stock air hoke first though. Tight draw actually lends itself towards increased TH.

This style whoops my pooper with a 1/16" air hole at .7ish but i think the stock hole might cause inadequate cooling at that low of a resistance.

Thx, also for the trouble with the second set of photos. Was more difficult to build the coil lengthwise than across in front of the posts. Anyhow, managed it. The sweetness definitely tempered, the TH better, but needs more work. I build mini coils with 3mm silica at this stage - have not yet found suitable cotton in this part of the world for micros. Thanks again, that was a great help.

If your silica is made up of strands twisted together, it is usually .5mm strands.

Before I switched to cotton, i would peel apart a 2mm strand, fold a piece of wire around 2 strands then lace them into the 1/16 coil.

Ah, another good idea, thanks. Will certainly try that.

So what's the verdict?

Just finished 2 MICRO coils with your suggestion about the silicone - I used two strands doubled up - effectively 2mm. First coil lengthwise across in front of the posts. Second one as per your instructions between the post in the busy-taking-off position. Both came out at 1.0 ohm. The second one is vape perfect for me. Tried to take a photo, but have to figure out how to take such close-up ones. Thank you for the mentorship, much, much appreciated. Will be building all my coils like that from now on.

Can I just reiterate what some, if not many of you already know... This 26g Nichrome on the Grand is spectacular! After some testing I ended up with a 0.5~0.6Ω coil, maybe a 6/7 or 7/8 wrap, 1/16 ID coil (its all a blur...).

Testing this config. with my ADV juice against my 28g Kanthal in the VVG. Same juice in both, the flavor is VERY similar but, it might be placebo, but I think I detect a slight metallic taste to the Kanthal setup? Vapor output is pretty equal (huge) but the Nichrome setup feels thicker. Same volume, but more dense?

Downsides? The sub-ohm Grand seems to eat through juice faster, or maybe I'm just hitting it more. And I definitely feel the battery sag at around 3.8~ volts. On that note, I'm using two very old AW IMR 1600's and two new 2000's. Enjoyable battery life right now is definitely suffering. I can get maybe two and a half hours, or roughly one third of my 6ml bottle. Got some new 1600's on the way that will hopefully help the situation. Among the many traits that I love about the VVG is it's consistent output. So tell me coil masters, can I get the same vape characteristics from the VVG that I'm getting with this sub-ohm Nichrome setup, or do I have a couple more Grands in my future?
