Okay, okay..... I swore I'd never use cotton but this morning I made my first micro coil and used q-tip cotton for wick. For RM2. Amazingly easy, coil and threading wick!!!!! (I've rejected natural wicks as my juices gunk up coils really fast requiring every day or two dry burn but threading cotton was so fast!!!!!)

Used 30 Kanthal, my favorite. Don't ask how many wraps.... I did it at 0500 while having first coffee.:D Used smallest jeweler's screwdriver I have. Metered about 1.6

I may soon be a cotton convert.

Thanks X and all advocates of micro coil and cotton wicks (JCOkie especially)

Welcome to the COTTON CLUB ! :)

Thanks. I've done cotton threads, yarn, kitchen twine (all boiled first) and boiled bamboo yarn. Way too much hassle threading every day or so. Don't even need tools or jeweler's lenses for rolled cotton wick. Scissors not absolutely necessary if you have to rewick away from tools/kit.

I'm just going to use q-tip cotton until I set up a permanent RBA work space with good storage. Then I'll get an organic cotton roll.

TrippyBert gave me some wonderful juice from 301vapers this weekend. I didn't have to dryburn for 3 days using it. Bummer they are out of it right now.

I never tried organic cotton. i bought a package of the cotton pads from CVS make up section. they are the small wafers about 2" in diameter. You get a zillion for cheap. What I like about the wafers is that they are a nice consistent thickness. I just take a wafer and cut 1/8 - 1/4' strips then roll between fingers to get a nice even rope. i cut a bunch of strips and just store in a little plastic ziploc like the little bag that comes with the REO bottles. A tip - I always carry an extra strip and store inside my reo in case I need to rewick on the fly! Fits no problem and does not interfere with battery or bottle. :)

So I made my second micro coil, its about 7 wraps or so 26g kanthal. Came out in the area of .7 ohms. I like it even though it's a little lower then I intended. Virtually no lag time just vapor. Now the only thing im not seeming to like is the cotton wick. Im using sterile cotton balls as it was all I had for cotton. I have 3mm silica wick which worked nice for regular coils, although its a bit stiff and brittle. And way to big for my coil. I used the 1/16 drill bit as many others have then I pulled a chunk of cotton of the ball and slowly pulled pieces off till it was just about the thickness of the bit, maybe a bit smaller, rolled it tight to slide it in and let it loosen it self. It seems to have expanded to the inside edge of the coil after I add juice. And its nice and soaked. So I guess my question(s) is/are: is my wick to big? Should I try finding smaller silica to see if that tastes better? Ive seen somewhere about ekowool which a nearby shop is supposed to get today but I heard the 1.5 is to small. Any workaround? And heres some pics of my coil. 20130627_122719.jpg20130627_122827.jpg

Shocking how easy the cotton is huh :) I change my wicks every morning and dry burn before putting in a new wick....it's easy, fast and cheap!

What is it about the cotton that you don't like? The taste? The wicking ability? That would help to know. Is that an ERA? The juice comes out a hole on one of the posts? Nice looking coil....maybe by it being such low ohms and using 26 gauge kanthal (heats up REALLY fast) the wick can't quite keep up. Do you have to squonk too often? I never use a tail that long, but that's just me.

Well I have an igo l, and I think it might be the wicking action. I can take about a 1-2 sec puff before flavor gets weak, any longer it will get a kinda dry cottony taste. I can get about 6 or so puffs in a row at 1-2 secs with 2-3 drops before I have to let it sit and get the juice up there. I get around 15 puffs from 2-3 drops. Yeah those tails are a bit long, but the do get the juice from the well, and do it pretty well. If anything I would have to say its the wicking a tion to the coil I dont like.

I've tried the micro coils and cotton and they worked good but (for my tastes) I like a doubled up piece of ekowool or silica and 5 wraps of 28ga (gives me about 1.0 ohm) better. I get better flavor from my juice with this setup and just as much vapor if not more. I don't find the vapor to be too hot on the RM2. YMMV.

well, just in case you didn't know (not sayin' you don't, just sayin' :p), that is an incredibly hot and powerful coil you've got there. More intense than most folk have ever even thought about trying. Maybe that's why the wick isn't keeping up. Most people don't even use 26g wire; and most of those that do don't use it in a micro coil. And if they do use 26g AND a micro, they might shoot for 10-15 wraps. Nice looking coil, though. The vape might be a little less intense if it were facing dead-on to the air hole (a true 90deg. btwn axis of coil and air flow)

Yeah my first one was about 11 wraps I think. Came out like 1.7 ohm or so. I was shooting for about a 1ohm coil so yeah im a bit under. 24 watts is a bit much, ive found around 15 watts to be a nice place to vape. But before I mounted my coil I measured 1.4 ohms, thought it'd pull in to 1 ohm. The air hole is fairly on the coil, id say it hits about 95% at about 95 deg to the face. What I didnt do was wrap my second lead around enough and it flexed my coil when I mounted it. Im kinda amazed how well my second coil came out myself.

Agree with Pdib. A .7 ohm micro is the equivalent of approximately a .1? ohm OS (old school) coil. The micros capability to produce extremely vibrant flavors is wrap count dependent I believe. What your essentially doing by wrapping to result in such low resistance is defeating the "power to weight ratio" performance gain of the micro coil. Kinda like putting a second engine in a Bugatti Veyron, when one was WAY more than enough, the other would just overkill what's already overkill.

I would shoot for a minimum of 10 wraps on a 1/16" bore coil for maximum performance, more if a VV device is available.

Well Im using a k100 with an igo l. By no means a bugatti(in the means of pv's) im thinking my first coil was a little lose leading to its higher resistance. Maybe my 3rd coil will come out where I want it. Getting slightly better build by build. Maybe one day I will find the perfect vape.

Oh, I wasn't talking about the mod, I'm talking about a proper micro of around 2 ohms :)

I wouldnt equate a coil a bugatti, maybe the tires. 2 ohms micro coil. Did your non micro coils measure that high? I didnt really like the 1.7 ohms coil I first built, wasnt hitting that great to me.

No Way. A typical standard coil at 2 ohms is anemic in all aspects. I ran .9 to 1.2ish ohms before I wrapped my first micro. I've never run 28 ga wire either. 30 seems perfectly suited to the application.

Yeah, my analogies are often difficult for others to make any sense of :)

Yeah the first few coils I built were up and down till I got it about 1 ohm.then Did the rabbit ears one, that was about 1 ohm too. I liked the flavor, warmth, and the vapor production, of both but they still weren't great. The micro coil heats nice and fast, has great vapor and flavor. I wanna see if ican get one in the 1-1.2 ohm range. Might have to try and do a 2 ohm one also, to try them side by side.
