Does it vape good

Mixed feelings to be honest. I loved the sound of the V10's on full revs, then they changed them. I know it's about cost cutting, but to me F1 is the pinnacle of automotive development. They should be using V16's by now.

Imagine how much longer the cars would have to be for V16 or W16 engines.

They are going down to V6s because thats where the car industry is going. Smaller FI engines for efficiency.

I cant find a way where they try to find optimal performance out of a V16 for a V6 consumer car. I know, I know, F1 is basically a showcase for the engine designers and drivers, but I cant find any R&D benefits if they were to go that route.

oh yeah Honda is coming back too because of this right?

Yes I believe Honda are coming back into the game.

For me, I'm just a purist over F1. The noise of an F1 car still gives me goose-bumps. But the roar of a V10 did seem to get the juices flowing more than the smaller capacity engines they now have. I remember seeing a documentary on a classic racer that had a V16 engine in it, the sound it made even at tick-over was unbelievable - just like thunder.

I do appreciate the practicality of the V6's though and that innovations from F1 generally spill over into mainstream motoring. But when I watch F1, I want to feel like a 12 year old again, not a 44 year old

I getcha. I still gush for the start of a race. I just miss when Bob Varsha would say "Turn up the volume, here come the lights at the ______ GP!!!"

We used to have the fabulous Murray Walker "and, and, and their off" Probably the most excitable commentator ever. Sometimes he'd be literally shouting with excitement. He had to retire though a few years back, kept on mixing up the names of the drivers. Still miss old Murray though.

LOL, it does seem like it could produce a ton of smoke. I agree that F1 should be the pinnacle of anything automotive. I hate how no one can push as much as they want to because they tires wear out so quickly. It becomes a race of the fastest slow car. But it's still exciting to watch and more overtaking (DRS) than the MS era.

Haha, I miss that as well.

haha so hes like David Hobbes. Is that Sky Sports? I wish we had it here in the states. IMO Their reporting is much better than NBCS. I used to stream Sky in college when I was joke-broke.

Yep Sky Sports F1.
I persuaded the Wife that we had to upgrade to the HD package, just so I could get the F1 on Sky. Just last year, the BBC decided they were cutting back on their sports coverage. Even after they promised to carry on showing all the F1 races in full for free. Now the BBC just show half the races in full, the other half are highlights only.

With the Sky package, I can watch all 3 practice sessions, full qualifying and the full race too. The coverage is superb, with the run up and after race commentary, I get nearly 5 hours of F1 on a race day

I agree, DRS is the best innovation for a while now. The amount of overtaking now, compared to a few years ago, is amazing. It makes it a lot more edge of the seat for me, especially when it's Hamilton doing the overtaking. Grossjean, just seems to prefer crashing than overtaking

Alonso in Spain.

That was an exception and I was really happy that day . Even with 2012 construction and 2013 compounds, they're still no match to the tires of the past. But I understand that the compounds were designed to make the races more exciting. Either way, I enjoy watching F1.

Hamilton is an overtaking demon but he's really hard on tires. OMG, I wanted to kill Grosjean when he crashed into Hamilton and then Alonso in Spa last year. The lotus team might have handed the championship to Vettel last year but taking alonso out in Spa and Suzuka.

Since I had never gone to a f1 race before I had never experianced the warm up lap. I was sitting there waiting for he race to start and I knew nothing of the warm up laps. As soon as I heard the first car come around my 1st thought was holy crap these cars are loud. My second thought was.... this is going to be awesome. The second I heard the 1st car come around the hairs stood up on my arms and I was in sensory heaven. It was amazing. I was on turn 14 for 90% of the race literally 30 feet from the cars as they come down a long straight and come into the horseshoe turn. I was mesmerized. The previous races were the porsche gt3 cup and the Ferrari 451 Italia races. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life.

That's the main reason I cheer for Hamilton, he has no fear behind the wheel. Sometimes it works out well, the other times ouch !!!

The year he became champion was a real nail biter, the final corner on the final lap, just pipping Massa to the title. Now that was a race to remember :)

That is a great description dude. I'm guessing I would have the same reaction. Damn I would like to see an F1 car for real :)

I agree, you do describe it really well. Did you need ear protection being that close to trackside ??

It amazes me the way they have to treat the engines before they first start them up. They have to pump pre-heated oil around the engine when it's cold. The tolerances are that tight, that a cold engine is literally seized up. Don't know if you guys get to see "Top Gear" or not, but I remember a feature they did on F1, the team mechanics actually got the engine to play the British national anthem, when they had it hooked up to telemetry - now that was impressive :D
