I still can't seem to find info on whether this will be an issue with a single battery, or if this is more a problem with the double batteries. Does anyone know?

Jam--yes, it is a problem with single batteries as well. There have been many reports over the last year, including single batteries like the 14500 and the 10440.

Thank you Sun for your reply, I ordered some 10440 batteries that said protected on the website, but I can not find anything on the label that says it's protected. It's the Gray Trustfire that reads: TR10440 600mah 3.7v. I got these to use in a laser mod, and they were too long to fit in the charger or the laser, but the blue 10440 that came with my PT fit just fine, it reads ICR10440P 320mah, and that is all it says on the label. Should I just toss these in the trash and reorder from a more reputable website?? So far I have had no issues with the blue 10440, but I guess you can not predict it if they short out all of a sudden.

But...14500 & 10440 are unprotected batteries unless I am mistaken.
So again it goes back to making sure you use protected batteries for safety.

Were you talking about protected or unprotected batteries here, Sun?
I was under the impression you were talking about UNprotected 14500 & 10440 batteries having the problems and was therefore agreeing with you.

Back from th doc, everything A-OK! The burns are not serious, barely more than a bad sunburn (no blistering) and my eye is fine, just sore from the contact. No corneal damage, seeing fine, my eyeball just aches. Doc says it should pass in a couple days.

The batteries were "Evergreen". I ordered silver ones from 24hourbatteries.com from the CR123 section and they sent those, so I assumed it was an equivalent swap-out. Nothing on the site about their being protected or not, and nothing on the packaging, as it was clear plastic.

I was using a 501 to 801 adapter at the time as well. Not sure if that made any difference or not.
Glad to hear that you're o.k.

Are there any reports of protected batteries doing this?

I know the unprotected ones are dangerous, I just want to know how safe the protected ones are. (I'd use a Tenergy CR123 but they don't come in 3.6V and this is for a Little Chuck.)
If you want the safest 3.7v CR123 battery available for your Little Chuck try these. AW IMR16340 550 mAh IMR CR123 size LiMN Rechargeable Lithium Battery
LiMN chemistry is as safe as it gets. They also make a 18650 in this chemistry as well. They are rated well above the power needed to drive an E-cig atomizer. I wish they made a 3v CR123.

That is the same gray 10440 I just got, still waiting on my charger to arrive. I don't need these just yet, but when the mod I am waiting on gets here, this will be the one to use in it. Thanks for posting this photo.

As far as the ones I ordered for the little chuck, I still don't have those yet, so I won't know for sure until they arrive.

The number of names for 16340/RCR123/CR123a etc. is confusing but wouldn't these be the same thing but with a higher mAh?
AW RCR123a Protected 750 mAh Battery

ETA: Never mind. The second one is a Li-ion from AW. The one you posted is a LiMN from them.

The Ultrafire 16340 batteries are a replacement for standard CR123A batteries in many applications. Sometimes called an RCr123A or Rechargeable CR123A some caution must be excercised as these cells are 3.6V, not 3.0V as is a standard CR123A and these cells are also about 1mm longer than is standard so if you're using 2 in series you need to be aware that they'll be 2mm longer in total and outputing 7.2V(8.4 peak). These are the right choice if your using them in an LED flashlight known to fit this type of cell - otherwise we recommend our Tenergy cells linked below.
Both the Little Chuck and the Screwdriver Mk1 (which I also ordered) take 3.6V or 3.7V CR123s. The Little Chuck also takes 18350s and I bought some protected ones from Mad Vapes (the only place in North America that carries them).

I'm going to do a little more reading but I have the feeling I'll end up with the LiMNs.
