In fairness, there's a certain amount of logic to the laws that turned Popeye Candy Cigarettes into Popeye Candy Sticks and eliminated the red on the end. That was about the glorifying of cigarettes, which was common for the longest time. Cigarettes were cool. They were rebellious. And it was common to think nothing of that, and kids were influenced by that coolness. I know I was. So they wanted to remove anything marketed at kids that were designed to glorify smoking.

It's a bit of a stretch, sure, but not beyond reason.

It's not a bit of a stretch. It's a big stretch.
I'm just playing the devils' advocate here in pointing this out.

BTW, I tried those candy sticks a few years back. They were more chalky then I remember.

I remember the paper wrapped gum cigarettes. Had a powdery coating so when you blew in them, a cloud of "smoke" came out.

Ha ha ha, what fun!

A private Stash???

I bought them today just so I could take a picture for you guys!

My wife used to eat them as a kid, so she had some today. She forgot how hard they actually are!

BTW She has NEVER smoked. Maybe HC was wrong with their theory?

Edit: There was no Dollar Store when I was a kid! There was the " 5 &10 " cent store.

INFLATION!

Remember the old corner candy store?
The one by my grade school had a grid of of about 60 little wooden cubbie holes in the candy section. Each with a different treasure. I cannot ever remember seeing any of them being filled so they were magic when I was a kid...
We would line up and point to the candies and say, "five of those, two of those..."
We would not have to ask how much each were. We all knew and did not need signs in those days.
The old couple that ran things would fill the little paper bag, no tongs or gloves in those days. Just a big smile from them and a grateful thanks from us (plus a few coins).
If I was really flush with cash, I might spurge and buy one of those Macintosh's Toffee for a whole nickle. If it was cold, you could slap that huge slab on a wall to break the contents into manageable pieces...

Passed that old store a few years back and saw that it is now a Mac's...
Should have known that you can never go back:(

Heh, I only remember five-and-dimes from way back in the mid-70s. After that we mostly just called them variety stores since most of them were either a Mack's Milk or Becker's.

I also remember the gum cigarettes that blew powdered-sugar-smoke. They had them in "chocolate" too, but it wasn't real chocolate, it was some nasty log of sadness like carob or something.

One thing I can say about the Popeye cigarettes though is that they aren't much more expensive than I seem to remember them back in the early 80s, where a pack of 'em I believe cost a quarter, so $1 for a 3-pack is only a 33% price increase in the past 30 or so years.

On carob: "Y'know, there are other things that have the colour and texture of chocolate--brown crayons, for example--but you don't see people trying to eat those." --Kingdom of Loathing

The ones that always fascinated me that haven't yet been mentioned were the licorice pipes. Problem was, I had two militantly ex-smoker parents (still do, in fact) and I could never get my five-year-old hands on any of that stuff.

I picked up a package of the candy sticks a while back, and they were pretty good in a sweet, crunchy way. No nostalgia filter for me to sway the experience one way or another.

I remember the licorice pipes. I didn't actually like them very much. They tasted alright, but they had a softer, spongier, slightly mealy texture compared to regular licorice whips that just didn't sit right with me, much like those licorice laces which I didn't care too much for either. I much preferred the chewier licorice.
