Thanks for the info, Poeia. I just saw a video on li-ion batteries and the guy said your pv is no more likely to explode than your cell phone or laptop, which also use the same types of batteries.

Stacking batteries in flashlights never concerned me, but I guess that's because they're not li-ion batteries. I'm becoming more worried about this whole stacking batteries thing than I probably should be and I know that these companies warn against it to protect themselves. But I use so many mods on a daily basis that I can't remember which battery was on top last time and in which mod. I do keep them in pairs, but I don't bother with putting the battery that was on top last time on the bottom the next time. I guess I should start keeping logs or something, lol.

Li-ion batteries in laptops can (and have) exploded. I've heard at least one resulted in burning a house down.
Li-ion batteries in PVs can (and have) exploded (and I'm not counting the bozo who recharged non-rechargeable batteries.)

But if you consider the number of laptop batteries in use every day and the number of sets of Li-ion batts we pop into our PVs, the odds of it happening are very, very slim. Take some simple precautions and you can reduce the odds further -- no unprotected li-ion batts (IMRs don't need it for whatever reason that I've never bothered to fully grasp); don't leave your batteries charging while you are asleep or not at home, etc. If you're more concerned, I guess you can always pop your batteries out of your PV before you go beddy-bye.

I never heard anything about which battery goes on top but, if you are worried about that, get a Sharpie and label one battery from each pair "T" (top) and one "B" (bottom.) Of course, this is the Ovale V8 thread and, as its battery layout is side-by-side, we don't care about that here.

If you think flashlights don't use li-ion batteries, go read CPF -- the candle power forum. Compared to the flashlight freaks, we vapaholics are running our PVs on static electricity.

Haha! What are you doing in a Flashlight Forum, and why does one even NEED a flashlight forum? So funny... :D.

I'm confused.

I bought the Ovale V8 kit at SmokTek and it comes with those same blue wrapper 18350 batteries that everyone gets in a kit.

The somewhat silly manual says nothing about these being protected batteries or makes any point about using protected batteries.

Based on my experience with 18650 and 14500's these batteries show nothing obvious that they are protected. No indent at the base indicating there's a circuit down there. The negative end looks just like the bare metal casing of a plain battery. Stuff like that.

I went looking for more batteries. I have seen some ICR's that say they are protected, but other than being labeled ICR they look exactly like the batteries that came with the kit.

So...

Anyone know if the original kit batteries are protected?

And what to do with the V8? I know I can get unprotected 18350's but is that a good (or bad) idea in a V8?

Just curious - why use the 16340's? The only thing I would be looking for in a battery is better fit and longer life. So if the 16340 is shorter, it probably fits better.

Oh, incidentally, the UltraFire XSL 18350-1200mAh work fine in the Ovale V8. At first I thought they didn't work, but they do, and the battery life is excellent.

I have looked at those and they are not protected batteries.

Does anyone know, technically, if unprotected is safe to use in a V8?

Technically V8 has 2.5amp cut-off and it is safe to use any battery, all of them are about 1-1.25amp, you will never have more then 0.8A from one battery.
But still there is possibility for some short cut and for some damage and then it can drain a lot more amperage.
There is a small risk which i'm ready to take.

Hi Rick,

What I do is not what everybody else does, but I try to get the longest lasting charge for my Ovale V8. I've used both protected and unprotected batteries.

The longest lasting charge for me is with the yellow Ultrafire XSL 18350 1200mAh.
The second longest lasting charge is with the blue flat top ICR18350 900mAh. I put magnets on the top because they need a button top.
I find that the red AW IMR 18350 to be the least long lasting. They only last an hour or so of vape time and need to be recharged again.

IMR batteries do not need protection. They are safer technology, built for the high drain or something. That's why they are recommended for variable voltage mods -- they handle the drain faster.

Li-ion batteries are inherently somewhat unstable. Most of the cases of them exploded have involved people recharging primary (non-rechargeable) batteries, putting the battery in backwards, etc. While you are probably safe, it is always safer to buy protected Li-ion batts.

The Ovale V8 has a very short battery compartment. We've found that not all IMRs fit and I doubt that a protected Li-ion would (adding the protection stuff adds a mm or two to the length of a non-protected Li-ion.)

(I'm just parroting what someone told me earlier in this thread and what I've picked up elsewhere on the forum. I know very little about batts.)

Po, are the batteries I am using prone to explosion then?

Prone to? I doubt it. Lots of people use unprotected Li-ion batteries and don't have problems. The reason ECF has a policy against non-protected Li-ion batteries is that they are more likely to explode or whatever, not that they are likely to do it.

In other words, you are increasing your risk a bit. How much, I don't know.

Interesting... I've not posted about my V8 since I got it, and here I am posting on page 88!
I use both 18350s and 16340s and I am lovin' it! (Especially for the price!) Too much maybe, it is all I want to use now, and has got the wheels turning in my head, and a growing need for another vv device, any recommendations? The Provari is too much $$$ and I don't like the looks of it, so what else do you guys use?
Hope this doesn't derail the thread!

Im enjoying the Lambo 4.0 I got last week, from DiscountVapers. Besides that, Eric is awesome to do business with!

I'm moving away from using tubes entirely because they are uncomfortable for me. One of the things I loved about the V8 was the very comfortable shape. I seriously considered getting a VV Gripper but ended up buying basic box mods and am enjoying them a lot. (If I could just learn to build them myself I'd be in clover.)

Does anyone know where to get a reasonably priced rubberized kit? Ive been eyeballing this and have the money, but now I cant seem to find them anywhere :(

You could check w/Eric at DiscountVapers.com (he has a sub-forum here too). He has a few that he took off of his site because of reported issues, but if you're willing to take the risk (he can give you details on whatever minor risk it is), he will probably sell it to you.

I wonder if you bought the do it yourself box mod kit from Mad Vapes, if you could learn enough from that to build em yourself.
