my point is not the price or its heating abilities - it is that it is a dog to work - it is extremely hard to form into a coil without pliers, jigs, multiple blowtorching etc.

I know this because i tried to wrap it like every other coil i had made prior the first time and it pierces skin and i daresay bone! It is not troublesome if you know what you're letting yourself in for, but if you come at it from using a 30g kanthal microcoil, you're in trouble!

T

lol well I think I was ahead of the learning curve as I had switched to 24g for my coiling prior to the Rene wire.

As far as being impaled, it went all the way through my finger the first time I wrapped a 24g micro coil lol.

the René41 was darkzero's inspiration for making the coil jig.

Haha, I was about to say that the R41 really wasn't that hard to work with... But I have a dz coil jig, vise grips, and a butane torch... (I use those for all my coils tho). :D

Little harder than 24g kanthal. Definitely see why a jig would be handy lol had to get creative with the torch and some vise grips :p

Edit: this coil is 0.84 ohm, little light for me as of late and its not in the position I prefer on the Cyclone. Will drop a wrap on next one and figure out how to get it to stay in its spot.

Sometimes i like to gently massage a little 26g into a pleasing form without losing blood! Lasts a week maybe 2. I make R41 coils only when i have a clear desk - all the gear out and usually HRH is out too, so i can concentrate - once a month then.

I like the MM. Monkey sent me some great gear, but i use that for special occasions, spoiling Christenings etc. I find that rough method of coil-making works for me, since i'm always in a hurry.

you make it sound as though the wire went all the way through your finger.

It did! Although it was a lateral pierce and missed everything but the fleshy pad of my forefinger lol. I wrapped it, the let it go and whammy! Right into and out of my first finger on my left hand.

Cheeky ....... :p

*note to self : don't get any rene wire...

I can for sure see this happening to me if I wasn't so informed ahead of time. Thanks supertrunker! I approached with cation and wasted about 2" in tails to be safe.

This stuff has a different kind of crackle to it! Diggin it so far but we'll see if its worth the extra work over the weekend.

I really can't wait to taste the silver though haha Love my grand but I really want to hold some wood!

If you have a coil wrapping jig, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Wrap tight and apply more heat than you think you should. This stuff is tough as nails heat wise! I got it done on a luer lock needle and some vise grips to hold the tails and torched the coil on the needle until everything was glowing bright. Then I quenched in water. :D

i was going to point out that R41 was used in hot cutting of parts and welding titanium, but those of us that used it already realise that.

I'll wait to see Monkey's thoughts on ponies and R41.

Actually, am wondering if I already have some... I got some wire somewhere that was REALLY boingy... almost like jewelry memory wire. It won't stay coiled and MUST be heated to even bend a little. That is, you can bend it, it just won't STAY that way without heat. Bet that's what that was. I didn't notice any better coils from it... but then, I didn't get very even looking coils so that could have been the problem. I also got some nichrome ribbon wire, and that just tasted like .... I'm pretty happy with kanthal 30 ga:p.

Question.... does pure silver or sterling make good coils? I have roughly 30 ga in sterling, argentium silver, and fine silver I could try... is there a reason NOT to go burning it up? What about pure copper coils? Why don't people use these materials for coils?

the reason you don't use pure silver coils or copper ones is you need resistance wire i.e a load on the battery, else you just have a dead short and your battery is ruined in the various ways they can!

That's my understanding of it - i'm sure Mundy will be along to correct me, but that's my best guess.

Ahh... so the point of a coil is BAD conductivity to provide the resistance?
