I bought the TF combo and drilled it for BF.

This way, I could determine where the feed holes ended up.

That looks good:)!

Thought I should mention something. I wrote to baddog burl yesterday, to ask if they had any more blocks that were 1 1/16" x 2 x 4 1/2"
or larger on one side, but no side smaller, and they said they still had a few pieces.

His response:
"Okay, I looked through what I have in blocks that are within the dimensions you requested. I have quite a few. In dyed stabilized I have Pink, Green, Violet, Blue and one piece of Double-Dyed Orange/Green Box Elder Burl.
In clear stabilized I have Amboyna Burl, Afzelia Burl, Black Ash burl, Birdseye Sheoak, Masur Birch, Redwood Lace, York Gum Burl and the 2 pieces of spalted Sycamore, not burl, just spalted. They would all be heavily figured/burled/spalted or I would not send them in to get stabilized, it costs too much to have “ugly/non-figured” wood done. So I only select the best pieces.
Unfortunately I cannot take pictures of them all, its just too time consuming. When they come back from the stabilizers they are covered in a thick sugar like crust, this has to be sanded off before you can see the wood. It is a time consuming process. I will be posting all the blocks later this winter, possibly in february. Just depends on my work load and orders."

So I wrote him back, asking specifically for dyed and stabilized pieces, and a group shot of what would fit the measurements, which is less time consuming than measuring and taking photos of each one. This is what he sent me (I labeled them):
woods_zpsd04c2c69.jpg

I believe he cut them to close to our measurements, since they are all roughly the same size in the photo except for the violet one. Anyway, I bought the bottom 2 (blue and violet). I want to see them in person, and the top 4 are still available if anyone likes them. It sounds like he's got a lot more plain wood pieces, but I didn't want plain wood pieces, so these are what he sent me pix of (helpful hint, tell him you like dogs too:p).

I also need to clarify a statement I made earlier... I am NOT making NO MORE drip tips eva! That doesn't mean I'm not making anything else in glass, just not drip tips:).

Oh. Rob at Bad Dog Burl just wrote me again:
You can post the picture of what remains, I just do not want to get inundated with requests for more pictures. But those 4 that are left are fair game. Thanks again for the order, they are actually much nicer up close then the picture depicts. Take care, Rob

So if you like the pieces shown above, write him, but he doesn't want to be innundated with requests for photos...

Ugh! Dibby said not to be worrying about wood because the specialty wood was tearing up his tools or something like that. He specifically said I HAVE WOOD to make the mods with in PM, DON'T ORDER ANYTHING!! Now... you guys are rolling out these magnificent colors for FANTASTIC DIBIMODS and I'm on list number 5!

OMG I love the purple block to the lower left!!! It's won't match anything, but I luvssssssss it!

LOL, we have the same taste. You got the 2 colors I like. Love that blue burl, looks like van gogh's "starry night"

Val, maybe you can write him and tell him that I posted photos (name: Helen), and you like the blue piece I already bought, does he have any more that are as nice in that blue in the correct size? He didn't say that he did, but I got the impression he has lots of wood, just doesn't have time to take pix and post them online... (don't forget to mention you like dogs too... ).

Also, while I bought 2 pieces, and he indicates they are nicer in person than the pix, I am only going to use 1 of the 2 pieces... And I could not decide which I wanted to use for the mod. As pdib is only letting us buy 1 mod each for now, I'm willing to let someone else have the other piece I don't use. I am heavily leaning towards the pinkish/beige one from the pix, so IF I end up not using the blue maple, I'll let you know.

Also, he's going to cut the pieces down to exactly the 1 1/16" x 2 x 4 1/2" , so it's less grinding/sawing work for pdib. I think he would do that for any of the pieces (they look about that size already).

Yeah, he said he has a few projects going right this minute so he's kinda busy right now. He will sand the wood down if you order them, and he sends them out quickly, but he may not send a picture of it before he sends it to you.

The piece I got from him was extremely beautiful and very burled, but if you're really particular about coloring or amount of burling, you may want to wait on buying until he puts the pics up on the site.

I'm sure that no matter what the coloring, pdib will be able to bring out the best in the block of wood.

The big risk is in issues during processing. Even with regular non stabilized wood a certain percentage of raw blocks will chip or crack during the processing and no longer be able to made into a mod. I think the breakage percentage would be higher with stabilized. So when go with wood provided by Pdib the risk is his, if it breaks he starts over. However if you provide the wood, raw or stabilized, the risk is yours, you could get back a partially completed mod with a break, chip or crack in a critical location.

So I'm thinking my first one will be with Pdib provided wood and I'll hunt for a stabilized block for my 2nd one.

Edit: Don't take the risk, sell me your blue one piece C.:p

Ummmmm . . . . . let's NOT do that.

Glass, if yours are already cut, we'll get through it. I want as much material to work with as possible, in general. I want to be able to select the mod out of the block; both for strength/weaknesses and aesthetics.

I said not to worry about it so soon . . . . .. . you're worrying about it. :|

:p

I believe I said, you've got time to see what's available from in-house materials. Also, I may have to raise prices a bit before we get as far in as run#5. It's tight . . . too tight, as it is. If folks want to buy stabilized for a month or two or three down the road; please be aware that your buying stabilized now doesn't guarantee some fixed price indefinitely into the future. [voice of reason]

An old post worth reiterating to curb my enthusiasm..:toast:

Here's a little suggestion I'm gonna make (based on a few PMs I've gotten); if somebody wants to get all "interpretive dance" with the materials they choose for a mod, please feel free to check with me first. I'm sure many of these suppliers of woods exotic or stabilized have some reasonable return policy; but checking in with me is way less hassle. Lignum Vitae, Ironwood, Guayacan is some seriously hard stuff. I imagine I could make a mod from it; BUT, it's gonna wreak havoc on my tooling. Don't buy it (unless you're up for paying to retool my shop . . . . ~+$200). We've learned that "type A" stabilized (closed cell) is basically solid material; whereas "type B" (open cell) is a process that coats the cell walls, but doesn't fill the cells with material. I would imagine the "type A" would be more suitable for matching caps (custom). The "type B" would be fine, I'm sure, for doing the body only with it. I could maybe do matching caps with type B, or certain burls or woods (not stabilized); but we're epitomizing "Custom PITA" versions here. Also, some dealers of Burls are catering to the wood turning market. Their product is "green" (wet, fresh, juicy). We don't want that stuff. We want either kiln dried, or something that's been kicking around your uncle's attic for 20 years. Lastly, some folks aren't sure . . .. . you don't need to get your own materials. I have materials. Don't buy materials unless you're in a spendy kin'a mood.

Peace out (←)

You better let me know a bit in advance about the wood options then... I want something magnificent, not necessarily dyed...

And I'm not worrying about it... the hubby poked me with a stick when he saw the blocks! :/

sheesh . . ..

. . . . . .no pressure there . . ..

dib, from what I've seen there should be no pressure. They all look fantastic. I really like your magnetic bottom and top design. I'll probably scrap the wood bottom feeder that I'm halfway through building and copy your design.
