I got my Dibi:)!!!

Couple of things... first, I think I might have figured out what happened to Scandalex's mod... the fuse? Because... it did it to mine too, and now it won't fire:p.

But first things first.

The box, nice packaging:):

pdib made me a Mundy coil too:)!!! Very neat:)!

Out of the box:

Cottoned up:)

Current box collection (only a couple more coming soon) for Valheli:
IMG_20140502_142644.jpg

Left to right: Billetbox, Bloodwood/Birdseye Woodvil, Bloodwood Woodvil, Bubinga (african rosewood)/Lacewood Phidias, Bigleaf Maple Dibi, Reo Grand, Blingy Bogger Box, VTR, Microstick w/ Spheroid. My computer desk is getting crowded... LOL!

Now... Dibi observations... awsome! I love it:). Definitely the nicest and smoothest looking mod:).

But hit same snag as Scandalex...

The fuse blew? I think. It won't fire anymore... can't find another problem, but noticed this:

Now, the wire is not broken, but it is all twisted up and no longer laying flat like it was before it fired. I can't find another reason for the not firing.

The battery in it is the LP 2500 mah 20a one. The coil in it is the one pdib made. What could go wrong? Pulled off the atomizer, checked it in the meter... 1.0. Looked OK...

Put it on the Provari, E1 error. Hrm. Tested Atomizer, read .8. Hrm. That's not right. Pulled the top off. Tested it again. 1.1. What? Fired up just fine. Well, only 1 possible explanation.... the coil was shorting on the side wall of the atomizer. Pushed it up a mm with tweezers, fired right up on the Provari (thank goodness I have a Provari for a tester:p). USER ERROR, not mod flaw.

Welp, I ordered 2 fuses for backup thankfully, so out came one of my new fuses. Tricky install, but got it in... and the Dibi fired right up.

Observations:
Pros:
1. The mod is BEAUTIFUL. Hands down the best look and finish of all wood mods. Worth paying the big bucks for your own wood to make the mod with.
2. The design is outstanding, both the exterior and the interior. The size/shape is perfect for the human hand, big or small.
3. The function is perfect. I got the upgraded silver contacts. But I would not say it hits harder than the REO Grand with upgraded 24k gold plated contacts. It's roughly the same, but with a much harder button push.
4. Changing juice bottles is a HUGE improvement over any other bottom feeder. You aren't balancing a drippy tube over the mod anywhere.
5. I love the design placement of the contact leaf... it's accessible, and easy to noalox if needed.
6. The top and bottom magnets are exactly the right grip. Very easy to eject the battery if you have thermal runaway, but otherwise stays in place (assuming you didn't screw down the bottom plate).

Cons:
1. The battery rattles. I mean REALLY rattles... like in a tin can. Don't like this, even tho it's fixable by just wrapping thick tape or stuffing around body of your battery. This is using a LG 30a (not true 30a, but that's what it's called) 2500 mah battery. The o-rings don't prevent it. Pdib included 3 different o-ring sizes to accomodate different battery lengths. None of them were a perfect fit, the 2 smallest were too tall, but nothing prevents the side to side rattle. Same problem with all of 6 different 18650 battery brands I tried in it (Samsung, LG, AW, Efest, Panasonic, Orbtronics).
*edited to add- I am wrong about the above. Read later posts:p.

2. The Fuse. User error is easy. Test fire your atomizer on something else before putting it on the Dibi... although the $3 fuse is arguably cheaper than a collapsed 24K gold spring for the Reo:p.

I have a question... what happens if I don't want to be safe and use it without the fuse? Will the mod still fire without that connection there?

So ScandalEx... check your fuse. If it's twisted like mine is above, THAT"S THE PROBLEM, you shorted your atomizer with your coil, and the fuse went off:p.

No it won't fire. I use this rule of thumb :

High end mod = high end atomizer. Higher end mod = higher end atomizer :)

Never had a problem with that logic. Never had a short. Ever. In any mod. :)

Beautiful mod you have there GG :)

Also, have another question... where is the silver contact? Is it only the part below the button? Also, does this mean I don't have to noalox anything at all, ever? Or should I do it anyway to protect from oxidation?

I can fix the rattle, it's not a deal breaker, just pointing out that it does. Something that is prevented with a spring. Am wondering if you should consider retrofitting the mods with a 24K spring that will collapse instead of the fuse? It would eliminate both the rattle and the fuse problem in one shot...

I'm pretty certain with my coiling skills these days. Will probably run fuse until I get comfy with the mod and it's inner workings. After that, maybe just the leaf to complete the circuit. Dog knows i've melted my fair share of coils on unprotected mods before!

Thanks SuperX:)! The problem had nothing to do with the atomizer... was the coil touching the side walls because I wasn't careful (am not used to big coils, but thank you so much for making it for me pdib! Am enjoying it lots:)). User error... meaning totally my own fault for not making sure it had a smaller profile first:p.

I pulled off my even cheaper atomizer from my Woodvil, and it's working just fine with that one:p :p.

If you've got a dremel it's actually quite easy to open up a car fuse to extract the filament. I think I was able to make 5 of them in 2 or 3 min, and the 10A car fuses are cheep. The fuses actually offer better protection, and better conductivity. It is possible to replace the fuse with just a flat piece of copper, but then you have NO protection so keep that in mind.

Well... hopefully, I learned my lesson about not being careful about where the coil sits, and won't need to use my last fuse... but it's an easy thing to mess up for not careful coil builders, since you can't visually see if the coil is inside your atomizer cap when you put it on. Just a big heads up!! I didn't even consider that... was just so excited to start playing with it:).

Before I fire it up I put the cap on and use my phones flashlight to verify touching or not

GG, yes the silver contact is that protruding from under the button with the brass nut :)

Give it time for the wood to acclimate to
Your environment and see if the rattle goes away with the induction of good ol fashioned FL humidity :)

Oooh... the humidity is a good point!!! I guess I made it sound more dramatic than it is... I cut a piece of foam to go around the battery, and it was way too thick. We're talking about a sheet of paper thickness wrapped around to prevent the rattle now (maybe because the wood is starting to swell, as you mentioned).

Also, it really does feel remarkable in the hand:).

haha I can't blame you for being excited, thats one 'Kick Ayuss' mod you got! :)

TBH I am terrified of collapsing one of Rob's new fancy plated springs, I think I may actually put my fuse mod back in my REO, the fuses are cheep and easy to replace IMO. I have an ohm meter just like Supe does that you saw in his most recent dibi review video. The nice thing about having those long leads is that i can actually take the drip tip off and test the coil with the cap on to make sure I don't have shorts. It's saved my shiny metal Ayuss a couple of times already...

Well, I'm sure some of you are going to think bad thoughts at me, but THIS is why everyone needs a Provari:p. My ohm meter will let me put a shorted coil right on a mod... my Provari won't. The ohm meter measures the ohm. That's all. The Provari refuses to FIRE the shorted atomizer. If you are subohming, it should help too (I still have to test this), the Provari will test the atomizer ohms whether it will actually fire it or not. AND, the testing fires it, so it can help clear hot spots just testing.

What it does is flop the ohm range around if you have a short... you know because instead of say a solid .9 or 1 ohm, it will read 1, then .9, then .8, then 1.1... as in all over the place. If there's no short, the number never changes. Gosh, I love my Provari, even if I don't vape it anymore, I'll never get rid of it.

Well, that's a good point... but I'm not as handy as you with making my own fuses either:p.

The more I look at this mod, the more the genius of the design blows me away, on the INSIDE. It is absolutely the shortest point from A-B, and completely clarifies for me how a circuit actually works. No wasted space, no wasted circuitry, raw battery power. Brilliant!
