Here's how I dissect it, just by the by.

Open it, like a samich. Cross cut a layer (a samich half). Snip off ~1/8". Twist the tip and poke n' pull.

So the Simian took it's first fall today.... Stupid thumbless paws! About a 3' drop, didn't come apart and not a scratch on it. I freaked! It was all happening in slow motion!

Thank Jeebus it didn't break. I would have been one sad primate.

In other news... Giggy sent me some of this Hg whatever cotton... Do you guys separate the pad and pick the fluff from the middle, or cut a strip off the pad and roll it as-is?

I've always used cotton balls, never pads....

8-o so glad it handled the fall like a boss. I've been thinkin about some sort of exoskeleton thingamajigger, maybe silicone or leather. I don't know yet, but I kinda want something now.


And I've been doin the Koh Gen Do all wrong LOL cut a thin strip from half a samich like pdib said and much much better. Pretty sure I've been handling it too much and killin it's wicking mojo. I was just pinchin a piece off and workin it into a wick. so don't do that haha

It's still in the development stages, but something like this might be a good idea for the mod droppers.

at the risk of being a nag, I'll take this opportunity to reiterate that putting/keeping the set screw in the bottom cap will go a long, long way in protecting a mod. #1 best method.

ya ya I'll put the screw in can't believe I missed that recommendation. I even had the screw in while sorting my misfire deal, then took it out. However, bubble boy up there isn't lookin like such a bad idea for my precious

I'm gonna have to try that. I've been using cotton balls and to me the only the bug-a-boo is getting the correct amount of cotton; i.e. getting the density right. It's tough to judge just how much cotton you've got and do it consistently and reproducibly when you start with it in ball form. I rarely produce a wick that I wanna pull out quickly, but I often produce wicks that where I say: "This would have been better just a little more/less dense."

If you find the seam on the cotton ball you can unroll it into a long, wide strip which I find much easier to work with.

That's not that bad, as long as it hasn't been boiled. I found that after I boiled mine (and subsequently had to squish the water out afterwards), it became harder to find the seam for unravelling the cotton.

Try as a I might, I rarely can, and even when I can, what I then get doesn't look to have nearly as consistent a density as those pads. Anyway, I set my wife to finding me some.
