wow, mundy, man being a guy who also works hands on his whole life, I can only imagine how devastating something like this would be. wish you the best brother. I'm sure you'll adapt and figure out a way to work within your limitations, just don't go trying to be a hero and do stuff you know you shouldn't do. also man I know it's hard right now but always try to stay focused on the positives, you're still here, you can still walk and function within your limits, staying focused on the negatives is counterproductive to your recovery bro, prayers sent your way from this end man

Thank you Megan. After a setback last week that involved the ER and another CT I am progressing much better. For the last 4 days or so I have seen magnificent improvement each day. I saw the surgeon yesterday on my followup and he is pleased with my progress and says I am about 80% healed. Unfortunately he gave me some news I was not prepared for. Due to the extent of damage that he repaired and the fact my abdomen lining is fragile I am under orders not to lift, pull, push, etc. more than 30 pounds for the rest of my life or I could cause very serious damage that could (worst case) be life threatening. Since this precludes me from the physical work I have done most of my life I am in a state of disarray. I can manage my small company but cannot do the part of the physical labor I have been doing so I have hired another employee. We (my wife and I) will have to supplement our income in some fashion since this will not allow sustainability for us and our daughter whom has had a very hard time with her MS and cannot work. Hopefully she will find an employer who understands and can work around her needs. She had a job with Expedia and they were really pleased with her work, but they dropped her when lesions appeared on her spine and she had to be away from work unscheduled for IV treatments. Exasperating all that is the fact she is of age that next year our insurance will not cover her as a dependent. We will figure it all out and prevail, but it is hard when just a year ago everything was roses and all is happening so fast.

Sorry to hear... that's a lot of stress and pressure to be dealing with my friend. :( Maybe you should think about going into the mod/vape-gear business. No hard labor or lifting, and you could employ your daughter as well - maybe make enough to cover everyone's medical bills and still replace your income. Just thinking out loud here... It occurs to me that you already have a community here of people who care about and trust you... I'll bet you could start selling stuff very easily and also get ECF to add you as an official vendor. You could call your shop "Mundy's Magic Vapes."

A couple corrections about mokume and damascus.
Mokume gane roughly translates as wood grain metal. Usually contrasting metals like silver, copper, bronze. Gets used for fittings on knives & swords, and for jewelry. Does not get used for blades because it is not hardenable metal so will not hold an edge.
Damascus steel is the current accepted name for pattern welded steel. Different alloy steels are stacked and forge welded together. Folding and use of dies create different patterns in the steel. After forging, grinding and polishing the blade gets etched with acid to reveal the pattern. This etches the steel causing the different layers of steel to react different from each other. Example one alloy steel may look black while anther is less reactive. These are some examples of Damascus on some blades I own.

Wow, even a chef's knife! Too cool! Do you have a whole kitchen set in Damascus?

Oh, NOOOOOO! I Turbo'ed my Santos Mahogany OliveR!

I know I joked early in this thread about wanting to see an exploded view, but this is NOT what I had in mind.

The magnets had dislodged some time ago, but I never got around to gluing them back. (Well, I did re-glue one in the top plate a while ago.) This morning, I dropped it from counter height onto a soft carpet. I didn't think much of it until I noticed a crack. Just as my tear hit the floor, the wood separated in my hand :(

Now to dig back and see pdib's CA recommendation so I can put 'er back together. And maybe take the Master's advice about that bottom screw this time.

While I'm at it, I put this scuff mark on it just a couple of days after getting it.

I've never tried polishing CA - is there a secret method? Is it a different CA formula than is normally used for adhesion?

I bet next week we hear about Mr. Mundy having bought a hand truck/forklift, or plans for his own Ironman exoskeleton suit!

In all seriousness, I'm sad to hear that your quality of life has been diminished, as well as your physical capacity to work as you are used to, and the problems your daughter is having also. Perhaps there is some merit in the idea of your own mod shop? Regulated gear since you are heavy into electrics is what I'd think about.

Keep us updated! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh Mundy...good news on the healing but bad news for the rest of it...Can you and/or your daughter get on disability? I've always known that if my pottery job was lost or cut or I was fired from it I would have to go on disability. Even part disability would help as both of you are kept from working a normal job by your physical limitations.

Man, lesions on the spine...give her my love from one MS person to another and healing hugs to both of you!!

That would be Turbo!

The trick ofc is to not drop them and i have told you in the past, the way to make sure this does not happen is to store it in a phone case on your belt!

And if you are a clumsy effer - then think about adding that screw in the bottom so as to add some rigidity (yes yes Super-X likes commando and all that - but that waiting list is looking daunting no?)

Well I'm officially on "The List"... and while I have a long time to wait, it gives me a long time to look for the perfect wood. So where besides burlsource.us should I be looking and what should I look out for?

By the look of burlsouce.us's PDIB section the wood needs to be 5 & 7/8" x 2 & 3/16" x 1 & 3/16" or larger, and I read that it should not be stabilized type A only type B (I assume only needed if it's not from burlsource.us)

I'm looking for a heavy pattern, either very swirly with lots of circles

13155296714_961a2b1493_z.jpg

or the exact opposite kind of look with heavy stripes

There is a piece for sale right now that I like the look of, what do you guys think?

a20791e1462a862172ced2_l.jpg

Any advice on what to look for and where to look? Also how early is too early to buy the wood and have it sent to Peter?

Thanks in advance for the help/comments. I know you guys (and gals) like to talk about hard wood so I figured this is the place to ask.... :D

Yea, the screw is going in as soon as I get it back together. Just about to run into town as I don't have any decent CA glue here.

The Great Carpenter Bee Dibby offered to fix it all up for me, but I'm too impatient to wait for Mr. Mailman. I don't think I'll try too hard to buff out that scuff as it doesn't really look that bad in person - lighting exaggerated it in that pic.

put it this way, by the time we get to your turn, there might (MIGHT . . . . . . MIGHT) be an hybrid version, an sx350 version, a dna30 version (all of which would entail different specs for blanks), or I may have changed the design completely (thinking of going invisible . . . . like MoN wants); so . . . .. . . . it's way too early. And, yes, as the peeps with finger on tip of nose put it, PM me for sizes and specs.
