My unicorn (still trying to find at a decent price) is the Pioneer sx-1980. Huge power, better THD% then anything out today short of hugely expensive audiophile gear.

A thing of true beauty. You guys talking about stereo systems last night got me all stirred up. It has been a recurring desire of mine -- to get a good system for the first time since my college days. Even then, finances were a hindrance, but I did manage to come up with a decent Pioneer receiver, a pair of JBL speakers (loud but not particularly great) and a pretty good turntable (Marantz maybe?). I also had a pretty formidable album collection, but that's a heart-breaking story for another time.

On occasion, I dive in and try to do some research on what is good these days and, more to the point, what I can afford. I find it frustrating since most everything is designed for digital, and if I were to actually step out and buy something, I'd want a turntable to get back into vinyl records.

I see some true upper echelon systems. I like looking at those in the way I look at BMWs. Not in my budgetary world.

I never did join the SH forum because I'm an AK member and never bothered but it's frequently referenced and there are some good info threads there that I've used.
