Why did you choose a Nook over a Kindle?

I got mine way back, and it offered 3G and Wifi, and the biggest reason was no backlight.

So I was correct in thinking that the Nook can only download books from Barnes and Noble?

Have you ever had a problem with it? I'm wondering about customer support. Does Amazon offer that?

I can download anything. I use Calibre ( a free program that can change formats), which even has options for news publications and such.

Never had a problem with mine, just got a new battery this year since the old one was holding a charge for a lot shorter time.

Same here. ITunes Store for books and I have an Apple app that allows me to read my Kobo (Kindle?) books on my iPad.

Hmmm...backlighting. I'm not sure what that is. How is it different from the desktop monitor I'm using right now.

Backlighting would be pretty much like your monitor. Without it, it would be like reading book, you'd need a book light or something to read if it were dark. BUT... you would have less trouble seeing the screen at the beach or in sunlight without a backlight.

Why did you choose a Kindle over a Nook.

If anyone else has a opinion, please ring in. (I will, of course, be reading the ProVape manuals on the device.)

I initially chose the Nook due to the epub format it used for books. The kindle uses a proprietary Amazon format. The later Nooks allowed access to the Android app store, which allows downloading the Kindle app - and I found the pricing on many of the books I was purchasing to be less expensive on the Kindle. I use the Kindle primarily because most of my books are in that format and I found a way to hack the Nook software on the device. If I had to buy one, though, I would purchase the an Android tablet with access to google/android app store and get both the Nook and Kindle reading apps. Also would download the Acrobat Reader app (for PDF files).

You can use the Kindle reading app to read (and download to the device) any e-books you purchase from Amazon. I've contacted both B&N and Amazon for support and had success. Since B&N doesn't actually make the Nook any longer (they use Samsung with special OS overlay), I believe you can still get support, but I'm not sure how reliable they would be with hardware knowledge.

I would say that is true.

I left my iPad 1500miles away and wanted to access a book I was reading. I went into my iTunes, downloaded the book from my account in s few seconds, and I was reading it for no extra charge on my iPhone.

Works great for me.

Good point and the apps for Kindle, Nook and PDF are all available in the app store.

I would just get what ever tablet suits your fancy. I dont think ereaders will really last with the tablets having the apps for the stores. My wife had to have a nook, and now she uses the app on her phone or tablet more than the nook itself.

For me, Kindle all the way - if you're a reader it doesn't get better. The lack of back lighting is crucial to the book reading experience. Reading off a computer, phone, or iPad is nice at first but your eyes will tire after awhile and reading will get cumbersome.

With the Kindle (maybe the Nook too, not sure) the absence of a back light makes the experience very similar to reading the printed page and you can easily read for hours on end. You can also read the Kindle in direct sunlight or brightly lit rooms with ease and without glare. My Kindle Paperwhite has a built in light around the edges that comes on when it's dark which makes it easy to read at night or in your bedroom.

It's also easier to hold and operate in one hand (including page turns) which leaves one hand free for vaping!

If you're a dedicated reader like me who reads about a book a week, it's well worth the expense of getting an ebook reader rather than using an iPad.

Pros... I use it to read pdf manuals for work.

I prefer bound books as well, especially hardbacks. With an e-book (is that the correct term?) I was just thinking that I could make the font bigger or smaller as needed.

Another great thing beside adjusting the font size is you can do an audiobook version. I have a Kindle Fire (which I love) and for a dollar or so more when you buy a Kindle book you can add the audio narration by Audible, I do this a lot as I am (significantly) visually impaired. You can download the Kindle app to most any tablet, phone or computer to buy/read/listen to kindle books and sync to make them available across all of your devices. What I like about Kindle books is there are literally thousands of free books, excellent sales/deals, with thousands of great books normally priced at $3.99 or below. You can loan your Kindle books to/or borrow ones from friends/family and if you have amazon prime there is also a (free) lenders library plus many other prime book deals.

I have to jump on Kindle Paperwhite bandwagon. I own a Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Ipad mini with retina display, and my aging eyes definitely prefer the Kindle Paperwhite. You can adjust the backlight to any level you prefer, and it's just so comfortable to hold.

+ 1 for the Kindle Fire. Great way to read a book and it has all the other tablet functions. I check out from the library, so the book cost is nada. iPad retina display way better but, way pricier.

Kindle, or Kindle Paperwhite, if you want to read actual physical print.

It is much more like reading a physical book as opposed to the various backlit devices.

Reading off the iPad, Fire, or whatever, is the same as reading off of any other computer screen.

The eReader isn't going away.

Too many people want something none of the others provide: E Ink is the one over-riding feature that alot of people are looking for in a device to read books with.
