Just to clarify DP ... you mean both work in a P3?
Flat tops don't work or at least shouldn't be used in a 2.5 right? (I've never tried a flat top in a 2.5, always used button top)

YES! Sorry!!!!!!

Both in P3 or Classic, buttons only in the oldies but goodies.

Our recent discussion about button top bats and @ENAUD you mentioned buying a P3 for if/when these bats are not available and @Hobbs you posted a photo above of your P3…all this got me thinking. Please bear with me because I'm not familiar with P3s.

So I gather P3s take flat tops. Right? And as far as I know minis didn't naturally come in P3 form. Still right? If so far so good does that mean I could have Bill change one of my minis to a P3? If that is a yes I too would have a mod or two for flat tops if need be.

Sure hope these are not dumb questions.
If you are looking to get something that takes flat top batteries, you need a newer Provari (P3) mod. The 2.5 Provari need the button tops. The P3 top on a 2.5 just makes a different tank perch, the innards are still 2.5.

A P3 chipset will NOT fit into the earlier ProVari tubes, they moved the button hole up a bit in the P3 and also the Classic to accommodate the new chipsets. No Can Do retrofit...

The classic and P3 chipsets are interchangeable however, and Bill can or was offering the service of upgrading Classics to P3.

From what I understand, any Provari board prior to the P3 has to have a button top for the battery to make contact. WIthout going into excruciating detail, the contact on the board where the battery touches is shaped like an upside down "u". The button top fits into that "u" and makes contact. A flat top will only touch the high spots without touching the bottom of the "u" where the contact actually is.

Again, going on shaky memory, this is how Pro Vape handled the problem of a battery being installed backwards (reverse polarity). If the button wasn't there on the end of the battery, no circuit was completed. Onboard polarity protection was included in the P3 boards.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just stick with what I have.

oops, you're right. Didn't think of that

There's discussion about Li-ion battery shelf life even when not used ... some say about 10-15 years. Best kept at about 50% capacity when not used and stored for an extended time ... and that should be checked every 6 months or so ... ideally.

As far as refrigeration ... still need to be careful of extreme temps. Too hot OR too cold isn't good for batteries. Ideal storage temperature for Li-ion batteries is ? ... but refrigeration may not be necessary or even prudent. All that said, I refrigerate my batteries but question how smart or necessary that is when my ambient house temp is always 75-80F.

One thing I don't do is buy a ton of batteries and expect them to last the rest of my days. I buy fresh batteries in the exact quantity I need for the devices I have, plus 2-4 extra depending on the size of the battery and amount of time I'm likely to actually use that size. With that battery purchase plan, I'm unlikely to ever really know the real life difference in refrigerated vs room temp storage.

Just thinking out loud ...

EDIT: Pretty sure my frig temp is about 10-15 degrees lower than ideal Li-ion lowest recommended storage temp.

That's exactly how they did it, and if you make it possible to use flat tops in an old ProVari, and place a battery in the wrong way, snap, crackle pop...bye bye ProVari.

I haven't been keeping up too good lately because of work, taking care of my mom, my son visiting, etc. All the 18350 button top battery talk.....is there a possibility that they won't be available in the future? I'll post a pic of what I recently bought that is working fine for me, just wondering if I should buy more??

I have both XTAR and AW button top. The XTAR are used more than the AW. I like the XTAR 18350. But I just ordered 4 Vapcell button tops !!! ... DOH !!! ... I may be returning them too I guess ... shoot. The XTAR are getting hard to find too.

EDIT: Your XTAR looks better than mine ... all the gold print is coming off mine.

EDIT AGAIN: Mooch did a review of the Vapcell 18350 batteries 2 months ago and didn't mention them being longer or possibly not working in some devices. That might be something to consider/worth mentioning when doing a vape battery review ya know.

Every shop I see selling the Vapcell 18350 button top show the length as approx 35mm, which is what an 18350 is supposed to be. Guess I'll see when they get here Monday.
You gonna use metal armed calipers to do the measuring?
