I was with ya on that a year ago Bronze, actually, I do recognize their right to the roadways, but at the same time, I came to the conclusion many moons ago that what is right is not always what is wise. I don't ride on the roads locally, it would be a death wish. Even in the neighborhood, I have had some douchey behavior from folks, and this is a no exit neighborhood with a .6 mile loop. They really don't seem to waste any money on breakdown/side lanes down here...they give you 6 inches to a foot of leeway and if you miss it its into the drainage ditch!

I love to drive slow when Rickey Bobby is on my tail, like...just five miles under the posted limit slow :lol:
In as much as I sympathize with bikers, it just has to be said that bikes and motor traffic just does not work well. I see videos like the one you posted and it is perfect for biking. Though the foot traffic can be a hassle. And while an accident between a pedestrian and a bike would be ugly, it wouldn’t be near as bad versus a car and a biker.

There was recent incident in FL where a distracted driver hit numerous cyclists, I believe two have died as a result. Many others were injured. The reality in the US is that we as a society just don't recognize that we actually share the roadways with others. Just look at how selfishly folks operate their vehicles in traffic, tailgating, running red lights, passing on double yellow, texting while driving, that one alone, so many times I am looking in the rear view and worrying about getting rear ended because the driver behind me is focused on their phone...many times I have seen them sit there long after I have already crossed the intersection after the light change

getting excited about tomorrows exploration ride :)
I'll be bringing my tire pump and gauge with me, no shocks on my bike so probably going to run the tire pressure at 40-45 psi...generally run them at 65 psi on the tarmac.

Two words: Gate's Pass. It's famous, it's like a tiny road that sort of hits 90 degree grades at times the professional cyclists train there in the winter. I cannot count the times I have moved at a CRAWL because you can't see what is coming in the other lane. It can be bad.

Honestly don't care if people wanna ride their bikes...BUT where I live the parks department has spent a good bit of my tax $$ to create and maintain a nice bike path. Does anybody use it? Nope!! They still ride their bike in the road right next to the path and rudely jump in the middle if the road right in front of your car when you're trying to go somewhere. Have a been known to yell at them to use the frickin' bike path? Yep! Sorry if that offends but it is what it is. I understand if there's no bike path but when there is-get on it! Sorry if offends-I am glad you get to enjoy the rides you take and the beautiful sites you get to enjoy while doing so. Just saying that around where I am, some of the most rude people I've come across on the road, have been bicyclists...

The Motor City
In our older Detroit suburb they are trying to introduce bike paths by converting some four lane roads into two lanes, a turn lane and marked bike paths. We have an active downtown and influx of cyclists. It's helpful but a handful of residents have been complaining, wanting things as they were. With the number of distractions for drivers today even a marked bike lane gives me little comfort. Instead of trying to cobble up a decent longer road ride here I have to drive 20-30 minutes to parks that give me longer runs on paths without cars.

I used to ride many miles on these same roads as a kid, thanks to the foolish confidence of youth and much more observant drivers. Today, smoking would be safer than heading out on anything but neighborhood roads.

It's mighty hard to retrofit pavement to accommodate bikes safely. Especially in the Motor City.

When I was a kid we had a Siamese cat that would climb the tree and bring it down  my dad resorted to putting some eye hooks into the walls and stringing the tree up to keep it from toppling ... That cat would get up into the tree and just hang out lounging on the branches.

I got hosed on my off road excursion today, drove the fourty minutes to the park, grabbed a map, and found out that the trails were closed due to flooding...so since I was already out there I drove on a few more miles to another trailhead, the American tobacco Trail. This trail is a reclaimed rail way that used to run from the farmlands up to Durham and the rail was mainly to carry tobacco to be processed and aged. Last time I rode this path I only managed to go five miles in and back for a ten mile ride. That day was about 95 degrees and humid..from the south trailhead to about eight miles in, the trail is a packed stone dust bed, then it turned into a Tarmac path with a stone dust jogging lane on the side.

Today I rode thirteen miles up the trail. Most of the way in was long, long, upgrades. It's almost a kindness when the long upgrades are curvy because you don't get discouraged by seeing how long they are. When you can see about a half mile of uphill grade, you know it's going to hurt for a while  on the other hand, the ride back to the car is so enjoyable. There were quite a few folks out there today, I was thinking that they were getting their lick in before the possibility of snow hitting us here in NC this coming weekend.

They have been doing the same thing around Indy, and I understand the reasoning behind it, but they are doing it in some of the busiest streets threw out the city. The times that I have been in the areas now, traffic is backed up because of the lack of an extra lane, and there is never even one cyclist. :?:

We used eye bolts into the wall and piano wire.

Honestly, a fast biker is probably more at risk on a bike path with pedestrians on it than riding on the road. Bike paths can be crazy awful for hitting the random pedestrians.

I used to routinely bike on the road with a particular bike path, because it genuinely was safer. IIt was also a road where it was easy to pass me.

I can understand your annoyance and I was never one to ride in the MIDDLE of the road (mainly because I feared DEATH) but that is one explanation. Also, the bike path got filled with gravel and the road not so much. There is nothing more annoying to a good workout than to stop and change your tires.

Tucson is "bike friendly" there are few paths and tons of lanes but it makes for pure chaos. If they HAD a bike path (they probably do someplace) I'd use it.
