I read someplace (yes, I realize that beginning part is not exactly a "certified by truth" sort of statement) that in the US, people spend more on their pets than their kids.
When I go to petsmart or wherever I kind of believe it. I try not to think too badly of the human race when I go there-- I mean, there are lots of pet owners who never HAD kids, and also, you can own far more pets than you can kids over the course of a life time, etc.
Also there are the "pedigree" owners. My older brother has done that like 5 times, it just sort of seems to make
sense to him, but to me plopping down 2K for a puppy makes NO
sense at all. All of his pedigrees get expensive problems.
My happy mutts picked up from certain death tend to be more robust, smarter, and far less health problems.
Although I must admit I draw the line at like, cancer treatment. This is mainly because many humans I have known that had cancer were MISERABLE. I would hate to do that to a pet with them having no clue they were being treated, etc. I am also of the belief that if an "animal" needs acupuncture, it's probably the HUMAN that needs it.
Also, I do not believe in pet psychics. If I ever hired one, I would ask the psychic to like, tell me the pet's name (not vice versa which is what DOES happen) because the psychic should ALREADY know, am I right.
IDK this is just me. Pets sort of fall between "livestock" and "kid" to me. I'm not going to eat one, but well, I have limits. It was awful the first time my kid's dog got bit by the vet the antivenin quote was horrifying.... We did not have the money, nor were we sure the dang dog even FELL in the right dosing window. The vet made it sound SO dire that I was like, "Holy goodness should we put this pet DOWN I don't want her to get necrotic fasciitis that sounds like HELL."
Then the vet was like "no one would put a pet down for a rattle snake bite, that is like a very rare chance and we can just keep her comfortable for few days." So we did that and holy goodness was it CHEAPER. I was like, "Hmm interesting new tune."
Turns out for a lot of dog owners we talked too later, often the bigger dogs don't need much and especially ours she was about 90% Australian cattle dog and not really that susceptible to snake poisons. She got bit twice more and she was FIINE we just gave her tramadol for a few days.
