THE NIGHT EVERYONE LOST AT IDOL, EVEN IDOL.
I was reminiscing about when/why I started watching this dumb show. For the life of me, I can't remember, friend, the kid, coworker? It was unexpected honestly because I was raised not just a music snob, but a classical one too. I went to the Kennedy Center a lot, dragged by a parent and stuff, the kind of teen (LOL and adult) that will make fun of their teen heart
throb for singing on the "High side of the note" even while wanting to have their little babies (that would be Bono, and he DOES sing on the high side of the note .Singing lessons helped.) But yeah I was supposed to be a virtuoso, not a social worker. My teacher was the first chair of the National Symphony orchestra, and my mom did not talk to me for Some Time when I was like, "Mom I need music to be a bit more fun," as I went to whatever dive cover bar with my pals to drink.
So I don't know what happened, but I started watching and like with every season, things got a little weirder. Like, surely ALL know that the AI "Winner" is picked long ahead of time and the crazed teen fans, it was not really ABOUT them any more, it was about their PARENTS, specifically the moms. who were FAR more vocal about their "favorites" and developed a RABID attachment to their "chosen Idol."
Which is how THIS dude, who by then Idol was selecting "ringers" too, like oh, having a record label and putting out a few records, that was FINE and like I think he just wanted some exposure, actually for the music he already had out to be heard, but like, DID NOT WANT THE ELDERLY, decided that he did NOT want to win, as evidenced by his song and clothing choice in the FINALE. I think it was.
Original Song
Taylor Hicks's DESPERATE ATTEMPT to
throw the finale. I MEAN you do not do THIS if you want to WIN. YOU JUST DON'T.
This guy was not a terrible musician but sort of a down home Alabama type dude and I REALLY believe that he thought he WOULD not win idol. His distaste with his fans was MORE than evident, he would RUN from the scary housefraus. Really.
;
HOWEVER, they chased. The fan "art" (don't look at Idol fan art if you don't want to be disturbed, period) the endless sweeping PHONE calls, IDOL KNEW there would be a LYNCHING.. Taylor KNEW he was gonna have to bang some fifty year olds. He was all like, "MANNNN I did not sign ON for this." Idol was like, YEAH we know, we don't care for it EITHER but WHAT can we DO??"
Hence the housewives entered the picture and during the announcement it was clear.... No one was happy.
This is the day when the fans were momentarily in charge of the Idol and hence, the moment that it was actually REAL.
While Taylor Hicks remains one of the top grossing artists from Idol, EVEN HE knows he doesn't deserve it, it's still that last, 700 lb curled iron haired MAIDEN buying his albums (sometimes HUNDREDS of them) and like, realizing that REALITY TV and MUSIC do not coincide. That it should be the artists and producers in charge, NOT THE FANS as evidenced from a lot of time around musicians, it is luck, chance fate and a glint of SOMETHING otherworldly, whatever it may be, that deserves...…. Success. Not elderly women watching on TV, that is not how you are supposed to do it.
Idol was always bad but this year it was mausoleum like. For everyone. Taylor is still putting out the music he did not want or start with, he is still ogled by housewives everywhere. And he knows, it is not the Vision he Had, that Idol had, that anyone had.
Realty TV-- at times a dish best served cold.
When it really gets real-- beware the reality who truly believes in you... .no matter what..
