I understand all of that but the general public doesn't and for the most part the non smoking and non vaping public don't want to sit in a room as we vape or smoke.
I sit in a room (about 15 x 30 ft.) at least twice a month, that has rather poor ventilation and vape with non-vaping members of the public. A couple are smokers, most of these people are neither. I routinely ask if they are okay with me vaping in their presence, and am often curious if they can smell what I am exhaling or if it ever does bother them. I am vaping in their presence around 3 to 5 hours at a time. To date, out of the 80 or so hours I've vaped in their presence, I've had one minor complaint from one of these people. That person (a non cigarette smoker) has gone on to ask me several times if I brought him a vaping device that he could use just for that night.
Of the 80+ times I've vaped in public around strangers, I am yet to be asked or told not to. You'll see me say, "still batting 1.000" as that is true for me to date. I am certain that in all these situations if I lit up a smoke and pretended like this is perfectly okay, that I would be batting around .083 and would be barred from many locations as I'd be known as the guy who didn't get the no message the first 30 times it was communicated to me.
I believe this idea that the public absolutely minds if we vape in their presence is partially based on experience of fellow vapers who aren't batting 1.000 and have faced scrutiny from members of the public; but mostly, I believe it is based on ex-smokers who have bought into ANTZ rhetoric about SHS and who believe it is way way too problematic or even inconsiderate to do such an activity in public.
As another member of ECF has said, I get more flak about vaping in public from people on ECF than I ever get in real life. Like way more, because I really have zero people in my neck of the woods (friends or strangers) that give me any flak. But here on ECF, it is about 20 to 45% of the vaping participants in this type of thread that act as if I am engaging in a grave social injustice and that if I am vaping indoors, in public, I must be a highly disrespectful person.
