Is vaping a health risk? No, not until someone definitively proves otherwise.

vaping is either a health risk or it is not. Whether it is definitively proven to be a health risk is another issue. And it's not like the consensus opinion on a internet forum used by a bunch of vaping enthusiasts is gonna be biased. (sarcasm)

Even though I vape, I think it is obvious that until we have a good bit of compelling, peer reviewed scientific consensus, the default positions should be one of caution.

Are you talking about second-hand vapor?

I feel very strongly that studies have already shown it is of no threat to others.
And I find it nearly impossible to imagine a situation in which it would be, or ever could be.

This is, of course, not including the very rare possibility that someone could have an allergic reaction.

As of this moment, considering ALL available evidence, vaping under normal operating conditions is 95-99% safer than smoking, which makes it relatively as safe as walking down the street. As for SHV, there has been no evidence that it is harmful. Caution within reason is good. Unreasonable caution due to fear and bias is not.

it really depends on where are you, let me explain my point...

I live in Mexico and vaping is illegal here, so I vape everywhere without being a jerk, but I do vape and not necessarily stealth as I want people to see it, get curious and maybe even ask or research on the topic..

but in places like the US and Europe where the legality of vaping as we know is at risk you need to be really careful not to change the views of bystanders in a negative way as that will only harm the community.... once all this passes either way people should start vaping more in public to create more awareness.

so to opposite approaches and I've used both depending on the country I'm in

How comes they weren't tripping when people smoked? Many planes in use today still have the ashtrays and the "smoking allowed" light....

In 2000 it became a federal law banning smoking on all passenger flights. I can still remember the ashtrays and when we got the order to remove them from aircraft. I can also remember smoking on helicopters and airplanes while flying around. Do you know how far technology has come since then? We had the start of the technology back then because I remember testing them in tailboom baggage compartment on helicopters and they failed constantly giving pilots false indications in flight. Now they are almost bullet proof and very reliable. Back before then fire detectors was heat detectors and not very reliable.
You can do what you want. Its on you if your caught. I just know that you will have no rights at all when arrested for it for it falls under the terrorist act. Thanks to the patriot act which I am against for we lost too many rights from it, any aviation related offence falls under federal guidelines.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Nothing has changed. The players and the tactics are exactly the same.

After watching them at work for some 2 decades, and reaching the ultimate state of disgust and despise, you want me to suddenly refill myself with "respect"?

Sorry chopdoc, I'm not that gullible.

For a long time I was that bitter. I could remember after a night of hardcore drinking and partying a bunch of us would go to a Waffle House and smoke, drink coffee, eat breakfast and have a great time just shooting the bull. We had as much fun there as we did at the bar and we always looked forward to it at the end of the night. After the restaurant smoking ban, we stopped doing that and not long later we just plain stop going out at all. Since I quit smoking it just doesnt seem that important anymore. I am worried about our rights as vapors being taken away but the enemy is the FDA and elected officials, not the common public. With people going out with the in your face massive cloud blowing and everyone else be damned, all they are really doing is creating enemies for all vapors. But hey, do what you want. Its just my 2 cents worth.

From all the evidence we have seen so far, especially being a part of ECF, vaping has no known health risk nor does second hand vape. The problem we are facing is Big Pharma and Big Tobacco are losing billions to the vaping industry and they are using every dirty trick in the book to make it where they are the only ones who are able to produce the vaping devices we use and the liquids we consume. Then we have governments like the one in California that is running scared because they already ...... away their tobacco settlement money and are looking at a huge shortfall because smoking is down so they are lying thru their teeth telling every lie possible about how horrible vaping is in the hopes that people will go back to smoking.
And lastly we have Joe and Jane Smuck who really dont know whats going on but we want them on our side because they vote and when we need a politician replaced with one who isnt indebted to Big Pharma and Big Tobacco we can count on these people to help us in our plight.

Now what does everyone think we should do. Should we all go out and blow massive cloud where ever we are and alienate anyone who might be willing to help us or do we use some caution and common sense and weather the storm until the true facts get known and people are not scared our clouds might harm them and more accepting of them. yall decide.

I am one that does not vape where no smoking is allowed, that is not to say I go into smoking areas to vape I just refrain until I get to somewhere I can vape freely. Personally think the local level of government and businesses are a bigger threat. There have been bans and severe restrictions passed locally in quite a few cities or like in my area having most public places post no ecig signs right along with the no smoking signs, the later of which was greatly influenced by people vaping inappropriately. If your city restricts the heck out of or bans vaping or if most public places disallow it BT and BP do not matter much in the end.

There is no reason why these ideas have to be mutually exclusive. One can be courteous and respectful of others while not hiding or banishing themselves to the smoking area. If we keep treating vaping like smoking, there's no reason anyone else shouldn't.

I am not advocating treating vaping like smoking or even only vape in smoking area's. I am suggesting a little courtesy with your vaping. If your in an airport, its not a good suggestion to be sitting back with your 200 watt mod in one hand and a bottle of juice in the other hand. What is wrong with using an ego and a small clearomizer in a situation like that. You still get your fix and as many said they have a travelling vape set up. If your in a crowded area and need a fix, walk to an area not so crowded for your fix instead of trying to create a fog bank in the middle of the crowd. Promote vaping by being a vape representative, not an antagonizer. Thats all I am saying.

Then you're not an "only vape where I can smoke" kind of person, and I'm not sure why we're arguing.

To answer the OP, if I were in such a situation, I'd probably duck into a restroom. I'd also like to add, unlike when I was a smoker, if I stay busy, I often go for hours without a vape, and without jonesing for one. As a smoker, I'd start watching the clock and start planning the when and where of my next cigarette about 15-30 minutes after I put one out.

As an aircraft mechanic I can honestly tell you that your playing with fire here. Most cabin fire detectors are infared and they are tested with "cans of smoke". Thats how they detect a fire is from a wisp of smoke. If you inadvertently set off a fire alarm from vaping on a plane the outcome will not be pretty. Even if you dont set off an alarm, it only takes one passenger to turn you in, then federal marshals will search you, find your vape gear and once again, the outcome wont be pretty.

I have also vaped on almost every flight I have been on. I just am sure not to blow any wisp of smoke at all, and I usually vape right in the cabin...
I have vaped in both the smoke rooms and not in the smoke rooms of the airport. in a corner waiting for my flight to board... Ive semi stealth vaped (Meaning I blew little wisps of smoke, but not much. )

I mean, I used those for the two examples because Airports are common for me, and because i specifically remember the amusement park one.
I travel a lot... So... I vape on Airplanes, and In airports. Usually it was in the smoking room in the airports, but the last time I was in one, I couldnt stand it, and everytime I go in one, I feel Very uncomfortable and, moreso because of the health risks I am subjecting myself to.

The amusement park, Its just... I remember going to one, and I couldnt stand being in the smoking room, as it was super tiny, and not ventalated, and terrible, and I had to stand outside and vape. Even when I was told by a staff to go inside the room, I refused in a respectful manner and told him I could use it without anyone noticing. He was okay with that, or didnt wanna deal with it.

Also an issue in bars and stuff, as each time, I need to have the smoking area, as I vape.

But We are not smokers. we are Vapers. And I know it looks the same, and I do want to be respectful... but do we not have the right to protect our own health as well?
For all those who wanna be super respectful, I get that, But at this point the damage was done years ago. it wont change anything. But non smokers have a right to not be subjected to smoke... just like I think we should have.

Given the choice, Stealth vape it, in places you cant smoke, or suffer the health risks of second hand smoke.

I didnt think any of us was arguing, we all was discussing in a rational manner. Someone said earlier it was a train wreck but I have yet to see this thread turn into that. I for one am glad to be a part of this discussion for I am able to see others side of this discussion and I respect their views even if I dont agree with them all. I side totally with Caramel that I too dont want to see vapors treated like smokers like they are lepers or something but my way of dealing with it and his way are not the same. I can respect that.
I also dont want to see any fellow vapors get into a bind from vaping on an airplane which is the reason behind my caution but I am nobodies keeper. We are all adults and are responsible for our own actions.
In my opinion there is only a small handful of people who gives vapors a bad reputation but deciding they are the only ones with rights and cloud chase in public places trying to impress someone. Most of us do our thing and when in public are not doing it to draw attention to ourselves but are doing it because thats what we do. We are more than happy to discuss vaping with anyone who ask but we dont force it on anyone.
To me this has been an awesome discussion and I agree with My Miyagi too, those designated smoking areas reek and are not the place for vaping.

I've not heard or read a single person say they only vape where they could smoke. Perhaps you misinterpreted what the person meant.

There are places I go (Angels staduim for one) where I do go where smokers congregate. Why? Vaping in the open is not appropriate in this instance. It's also nice to chat with others about the game and I see it as an opportunity to educate smokers about vaping. I always get questions when they see what I am doing..

Can you quote or link to some posts where vapers have said they only vape where smoking is allowed? I've not read or seen any of these...

I have posted that I only vape where it is permitted to smoke. Most businesses around here that ban smoking also ban ecigs in the same areas. Now if a business clearly states that ecig use is ok but cig use is not I will vape there in a reasonable manner. But as I said most businesses around here that ban cig smoke also ban ecig use.
I did not try an sneak smoke when I smoked nor do I sneak vape in zones not permitted.
Just me though. Or maybe not?

Funny how reformed smokers tend to be. We smoked for most of our lives and many claimed that second hand smoke danger was baloney. However now that we quit we just cannot stand to vape in the smoking zone due to submitting ourselves to health risks and odor?

I vowed to never become one of those types of reformed smokers and so far I have not.

No I do not like the odor, but I used to be a stinky. And the health risks are minimal compared to when I sucked down the smoke from 30+ cigs a day into my lungs.

Back when I was a smoker I went into the ATL smoke room. OMFG was that the nastiest .... I've ever smelt. I quit shortly after that. And that's after 10 years of smoking.

Stealth vape. I'm not an approachable looking guy and I give off a don't f with me vibe. So no issues with the uneducated.

But people like my brother walking through Walmart blowing clouds and not caring. He's the complete opposite of me and no one has ever bothered him. Vapes everywhere.
