I've always wondered whether it should actually be "recommended" that a vaper try a cigarette after awhile...

For some, maybe.
For others, maybe not.
But like you, I have found that I no longer care one way or the other about cigarettes.
And I can have one whenever I feel like it, with no repercussions.
Because I am a vaper now.
And no cigarette can ever change that.
On the day I completed one month with vaping, I bummed a cigarette just out of curiosity.
It didn't taste bad yet, but it was really strange. It looked like I went back twenty years in time, because that cigarette reeeealy hit hard on my lungs. Like those first cigarettes you tried, remember? On that small time frame when you got used to smoking, cigarettes started to taste good, but they STILL feel like a cigar when you take a drag from it? That's what it felt like
I reckoned by then this MUST be a good sign: if a cigarette felt like that, only one month into vaping, that was because my lungs had already started to clear, which can only be a good thing.
About six months after that, I bummed another. But that one, I could not even finish. It tasted awful. In fact, I remember chain vaping afterwards just to clear that nasty flavour from my mouth and nose.
So, I guess I smoked TWO cigarettes for the last (almost) six years
From what I see from dual-user friends, and this is my opinion only, I believe one cannot "truly" enjoy vaping if you do not give your lungs the opportunity to clear themselves from the tar.
Let me explain: true, I stopped smoking in a day and an half. That does NOT mean I was completely satisfied and thrilled with my new device. It tasted like weak, ultra-light cigarettes at first. of course it would, I was recently smoking! So, some degree of self-control on the first week was necessary.
Over time, however, that vapour seemed to gradually thicken. Of course it wasn't, it was only my poor lungs finally clearing up after more than 20 years of smoking...!
Today, even an e-Go device feels to me like a "proper" cigarette (a mod feels like even better, but I never need to go above 10-11 watts). I strongly believe this happens because my lungs should be tar-free by now.
Of course, YMMV
