I’m at three weeks + on my fig mix, fingers crossed!! I’ll try it later after I rebuild. I’m going to look for recipes for rose, basil and blueberry. That’ll give me three more for the steeping shelf. I’ve been trying to plow through the multitude of partial bottles to decide if they’re tweak or toss. So, bottle washing today. Maybe mixing.

Well, so far not so good... three tosses. I should have known when I saw the May date on them. I clearly made some questionable mixing choices in the beginning . Today is definitely bottle washing.

What’s the most important/helpful thing you learned when you started diy, that light bulb moment when you started to make keeper mixes?

Try not to let your flavor percentages out of hand. More is not always better.

Figuring out steeping times, figuring out a "sort of usual" ratio for me.

Tasting a bunch of storebought to get a sense of profiles I loved and hated, so that I already had some "ideas" going in.

Heck, some of it, none of it makes sense. IDK. But, I tend to make tragic mixes less.

My big lightbulb moment recently is that I can have more fun (although it is more labor intensive) by mixing in smaller quantities. Once I go to mostly snus all day (and OMG I hope that happens on its appointed date) well, that's going to be even more true. Etc.

I never smell my flavorings before mixing. If I had, I would have never tried the blueberry milkshake which I like. My latest light bulb moment was to stop using the 100dt. I pretty much never mixed more than on 100dt at a time until recently and was mixing a bunch of sft's with the 100dt. When I got done, I realized that no two had the same amount in the bottles. Now I'm only using syringes even if it's a single flavor.

I just bought some more VTA Botanical Gin along with a few other VTA flavors that Bull City doesn't carry yet. Chefs is having another promo, so it seemed like a good time. I also got the FA Lemon Zest that Chefs has - no idea what to expect from that but am sure I will find a use for it. I didn't pay extra for tracking but feel sure it will get here eventually. :)

@FranC - I just tried my Sea Breeze with 5% Vodka and there is definitely more Vodka flavor at that percentage. It is nice but I honestly can't say that the Vodka improves it much, if at all. Maybe a bit? I think I will mix up a Gin and Grapefruit on the Rocks, or a Gin Breeze to compare. I might just let this Sea Breeze sit for 22 days to see what happens.

This is what Liam says about VTA Russian Vodka.

    Vape Train Russian Vodka
    Tested @ 2% & 5% Diluted in 70/30 0 Nicotine Tested on a RX200s with a Bonza 0.14 ohm dual coil Ni80 Flaptons @ 130w.

Manufacturers description – “ A sharp Russian vodka flavour that will open many opportunities to create some of the finest beverage e-liquid recipes. We all know that vodka goes with absolutely anything and when it comes to e-liquid its uses are equally dynamic. Create recipes such vodka and orange, spritzers, watermelon martinis’, candy infused vodka and many more. Pairing vodka works in beverage, fruity, dessert and various other styles of e-liquid making. This is definitely a great flavour to carry in your arsenal if you’re looking for that authentic vodka taste.”

    SnV 2%:-
Very light Vodka type taste with a very mild throat hit.
5%:- This now has a very slight grassy taste to it, much like Żubrówka Bison grass Vodka, the Vodka taste has also increased.

    7 Day steep 2%:- No Change 5%:-

No change 22 Day Steep 2%:- No change. This is very light, I’m getting a very slight Vodka taste, that very mild throat hit has now steeped out, I believe this is too light to be used at this % apart from maybe as an accent flavour, I remixed at 5% at this point.

5%:- The generic Vodka taste has now come out fully, the light grassy like taste is still present , I’d compare this to a Bison grass Vodka, Żubrówka, than a typical Vodka. There is a barely discernible throat hit at this %. With this being an alcohol flavour, I was expecting it to be harsher than it is. This % seems right as a starting point for a main flavour in a mix.

Suggested Usage Due to how light this is I’d use as a main note 5%-7%, Background 4%-5%, Accent 2%-4% and standalone at 7%- 12%. I’d use with other Vodkas, Fruits, Candies, Tonic water I’d avoid strong concentrates unless using towards a standalone %. If using with strong

Even when you find a flavor/mix you like, don't rush to mix a huge bottle. I would start with a 15ml first and vape it for a while. You can usually get around 3 tankfull's with that and will know fairly quickly if its something that you want around for a while. It also gives it some time to see how its going to taste after a little heat in your tank gets ahold of it. Don't be in a big hurry unless you have absolutely nothing else to vape and even then use a known one shot type of flavor to have on hand for something to vape while you figure out your game plan. Onestopdiyshop has great one shots and blends. Also WF hazelnut and cream is yummy at 5-6% as a stand alone. Just leave this one over night when first mixed. It will continue to develop over time into a nice cream base to be used in other flavors if you want.

    :)

I don't have much of the Vodka left. Guess I don't need any more.

For myself,I have to be careful with the sweetness and not have a high percentage of flavor.

I guess I've been lucky, I've never dumped anything... :D Know your flavors, keep it simple (use what you need, forget the rest), start small & change one thing @ a time...

Besides gin and tonic, are there other flavors I need from Chef’s?

I would say that depends on what you like. I ordered several FA Flavors from them that aren't available in the US. Many people won't care about Premium Custard, etc. I also bought a few rebranded FA Flavors under the Flavour Creative label because they are cheaper and it made sense to get all the bang I could for the shipping fee. This time, I got VTA flavors that Bull City doesn't carry yet - Lemonade Clear, Lemonade Solo, Sour Lemon, and Green Apple along with my Botanical Gin reorder.

I kinda like all chef's flavors, they have a lemon Rhubarb tart that's good, as well as English Trifle (those are one shots, I think I have a Donut King which I THINK is steeping somewhere in that next set of mixes. I hope it's good, the lemon fades a bit in the lemon rhubarb tart, otherwise it's pretty good.

I don't really complain about Chefs flavors I should probably get more honestly.

I have added them to a couple recipes on the to do list. Haven't mixed anything this week, still have a good stash already mixed up. Meg is out of her hazelnut coffee so will likely mix a couple for myself as well.
Can you post the recipe for the Hazelnut Coffee please. :)

Chefs claim to fame is their extensive lines of one-shots. They have SO many great mixers making them exclusively for Chefs. Many of them are tempting but I am determined to make my own. :D

The favorite one-shots on the FB page seem to be Ginger Rogers, Grapple Lemonade, Green with Envy, Mexican Fried Ice Cream, Tickle Me Pink, and Welsh Custard, all under Profit Shots.

For those who don't know, the comparison to Żubrówka Bison grass Vodka is quite a compliment. It is a legendary Polish Vodka that was banned in the US until recently. Each bottle has a blade of bison grass in it. It is a dry, herb-flavored vodka that is distilled from rye.

I think I was supposed to be on a spending freeze this month but seem to have forgotten. I ordered a couple things from chefs, ordered some syringes from FT, some batteries, and ordered myself a mod. Oops! I was trying to hold off for the bcf sale but didn’t make it.
