If you're open to suggestion I would like to propose that from a purely electrical standpoint that coils do not fire in the center first. The voltage drop is uniform across the entire length of wire and therefore the wire produces the same watts/mm over it's entire length.
When a coil is unwicked it most certainly gets hotter in the middle first, as you said, but thats due to heatsinking of the metallic posts and greater convected airflow around the ends of the coil. This happens to a lesser degree with unwicked spaced coils because convected air can pass through between the coil wraps.

Ok, so why does a wicked and saturated coil turn the wick darker in the middle sometimes? Some juice get vaporized off as it enters the ends of the coil and more so as it tries to reach the center. Greater length/dia ratio coils exacerbate this problem as you can imagine but so do contact coils where air cannot pass between the wraps.

When wicked correctly and kept to a reasonable length/dia ratio my spaced coil wicks tan or brown evenly down the entire length of the coil, that is, when I don't chain vape the center dry too many times.
This guy knows what he's talking about.

I want to add that it is normal that the center dries out first not only because it heats in the middle more, but also the nature of wicking is from the edges to the middle. For example in a vertical coil with no liquid at the top, surely the top will dry out first.

So heres my setup. Its a 16mm atty on a reo p67 mech squonker. Its a parallel 28g SS coil 2.5mn id 7 wrap. Its .34 ohms

I did just rewick and dry burn. The middle of the wick was a tad dark but the darkness washed out. I just rewicked a little looser. Maybe since its a mech and i squonk it doesnt need to be so full.

Since its a new atty its a bit confusing because im not used to it. Its definitely less airflow than am used to. Thats part of why i like this atty. The small chamber and less airflow is giving amazing flavor. 2Mm airholes on each side so its a DLH but i had 3 on each side in my last atty

Maybe it did get fired too long sometime because for 3 days i didnt have an issue like this, thats what baffles me

We will see how this wick does. Sorry, not super even and pretty

Sloth 28g at 0.34 meaning 0.68 in a mech is too hot. I will edit this post later and show you the number. Stay tuned.

ADDIT: nope, not too hot, I thought it was Kanthal. See below.

According to steam engine, it's great. Keep in mind it's a parallel coil. But I'm open to your explanation as to what you mean. Appreciate it...I hope I don' have to ditch these parallels I've been rocking, 'cause the flavor is off the charts...

That's extremely interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Makes total sense but I had never known/thought about it like that before.

Well, according to my calculations that wire doesn't go increase more than 900 degrees per second, so should be OK.

I still maintain the fact that length is the problem especially with the small chamber. If you space only the middle of the coil (it will look like 2 coils next to each other exposing some rayon) I think you will nail it.

Sorry couldn't be of more help. That's my theory though. Length.

Yeah, I lean towards that theory myself. It could be the small chamber isn't getting adequate airflow for the heat this big coil provides. I can either try spacing or maybe try a parallel 30g instead or something. I may even just try a straight 26g and see where it lands. On Stumpys for many months I was just using 24g SS spaced coils and 8 wraps and never had a problem. Then I started using this very coil in the Stumpys and never had this problem. But the Stumpys had about 3 times the airflow and a bigger chamber.

Still not sure why the problem wouldn't present itself for a few days on the same wick, but maybe that's just an oddity.

Hey sloth.. less airflow

When confronted with this after being used to open attys, it can be a problem. The limited airflow means that if you weak draw it the coil will overheat. Ive had this issue going to a tighter flow and running the power too high for the air flow.

In this case, when its a burnt juice hit, i drip and wipe the coil then its clear after a few hits, and goes on indefinately.

So confirming our suspicion there...in that case, options are either build a less powerful coil for the mech, or try spacing to see if it helps.

I have had a mid wrap in a small gauge parallel get cherry red on rare occasion. I thought the coil was burnt or had char on it, but when examined one wrap was glowing during a long draw.

I passed it off as an odd wire issue, tore out that coil and put in a new one with no issue. I made sure the new parallel was well strummed.

I can't explain it and it has only happened a few times. This is what I thought might have been happening on Sloths coil.

I've had some coils i swear were bunk. Bad spot in wire or something. Specifically with stainless, i also have the cold res change over time. Admittedly i dont have the best stainless.

With less air you cant really run the coils your used to, unless your power lunging against the restricted flow.

Step it down a notch, with a coil not so wide.

I looked for that in a dark room and didn't see it but its possible, and maybe even the rayon shrank after 3 days in one small spot in the center of coil causing there to be a gap even though no gap at the end of the coil.

Who knows man. I'll just experiment around. For now it's hittin' good with a new wick but I'm not pushing it with long drags. I usually take short ones anyway but was having a nic fit last night during a jam session :D

You will not like it with less power. Why don't you make it dual and ditch the parallel?

Well, where does the air hit the coil.. looks like it really doesn't very well.. what atty?

This is probably why you cant rock that big coil. It's just not made for that much. Its a flavor chaser, not cloud im guessing.

Right. The airholes are aimed diagonally in such a way they look right at the coil, but, your assessment is right on even so because unlike the stumpy (same build deck, bigger chamber) the coil is really contained in a tight space between the posts
