Does anyone know how to prep the wick to get rid of that "new wick taste"?

I absolutely adore rayon now, still vaping from my 500ft box from Sally's. But that new wick taste is awful. Tried soaking it in water, tried flushing with water, tried boiling it, it only reduces it a little.

How to get it out completely? I have to "back vape" 3 drippers full of juice (blowing into the Velocity RDA) to get enough juice through there to get the new wick taste out.

Thanks!
-John
using sallys, to tell u the truth i dont get the new wick taste.
i do add some juice and fire it just to condition the wick but no more than 30 sec procedure for doing that
and i do wash my hands and rinse very well b4 handling the rayon

Simply remove, you can pick it out with your pointy tweezers & cut it off. It means that side had a little too much rayon. @JeremyR had posted about it. After you cut it off check after a bit & it should have cleared up.
Do you mean trim away some of the excess "tail" wick, or do you mean actually remove some from inside the coil?

Trim away the excess tail or wick. Where ever it's darker. It's cause by an imbalance of the thickness of the wick. If you read page 1 of this thread, it's what Jeremy said.

Okay. Sometimes I get this and it's the part that's already cut short where the discoloration occurs. I can't really trim away the discolored part because it's already about as short as I can make it. I guess I should trim the tail underneath that part to balance out the flow and it'll clear up on its own?

Sometimes it happens on both sides. What then? Maybe I'm just leaving too much tail altogether...

I don't mean to cut the length of the wick, which is why I said to use something pointy to pick up the darken part then cut off. It shouldn't be the whole wick that is dark only a part of it usually the top layers. And yes if both sides are dark it's probably too dense, nothing to do with the length. Sometimes it also could be if you use a dark juice.

Doesn't work for me.
It does work, this is something every vaper should do after building or replacing a drop-in coil but for some reason few do... almost every person who talks about some kind of break in taste on either kgd/muji or rayon are either not breaking in their wicks right or not breaking them in at all, and almost every person who prefer the commercial stuff over the regular stuff.

set the mod to 370F or so, so there's no possibility of the wick burning, drip a couple of drops right on the coil, then just hold down the fire button, continue dripping one drop every 1.5-2 sec or so and keep holding the fire button. Do this for about 10 mims & untill it can't hold any more juice. If the juice has flavorings in it you'll see the stuff start to get cooked into the wick a bit. If there is any kind of taste left over after that it's bc the wick was very short and will hardly be noticeable, and gone after a few hits.

Easy, after building & wicking drip juice on your coil & pulse, fire your mod, do that a few times & your wick is primed. Then assemble your rda, rba, rta whatever.
ditto,, i 'flood & burn" at least 2 or 3 times.

I've always "flooded" rayon wicks just to check that the density is right and to get the trimming as close to right as I can. Way too fluffy unless wet. Yeah, it's a little messy but it works for me. I've never noticed an "off taste" from rayon so I never bother to fire it while doing that.

Interesting. So you do not have to saturate the tails? Just drip onto the coil and fire?

Thanks to @mikepetro loaning me some rayon (I'll send it back Mike when I'm done with it), I've played with it in a dripper.
So far: it was an easy build; taste was very nice, better than kgd?, not sure, but certainly the equal. I don't pick up any rayon taste, but nor did I with cotton. If the wick lasts as long as people have reported, and if I can rinse and reuse, that's a big plus for me.

Two questions:
I use microcoils (compressed) in the dripper, and that's what I threaded the rayon into. But from a quick scan of this thread, it sounds as if spaced coils are recommended.
Any comments or suggestions on this?
Second, it might be my whiskey addled brain, but it sure seems like I go through more juice in the dripper with rayon than I did with kgd.
Thoughts?

IME, spaced take longer to gunk, contact may last through more re-wickings before getting, uh, tilted ;)

If you like the way your coils work, no particular reason to change. Although experimentation can be fun. :)

Maybe taking longer draws? I find myself doing that sometimes, when trying out a new flavor mix...

You may be seeing the effect of actually better liquid delivery causing a "denser" vapor production which, in turn, will result in more liquid consumption.

I've never used micro coils or dry burned my coils. It's easy enough to re-build and with a 500 foot box of rayon combined with the low expense of wire, it just doesn't seem worthwhile to me. If you like micro coils, have at it, there is no "real" correct way...the beauty of vaping.
