Hoping to get a little help with rayon wicking. I usually wrap 2.7mm or 3 mm ID coils (unless the atty calls for something smaller like a derringer), I use a little less then half the width of a strip of rayon when I thread it through per coil. I usually try to angle the tails up and trim some out from underneath, then trim the length (i think I'm leaving it to long, as I do get some bunching). It always seems though then when I drip, I can take a few satisfying hits, then get a sudden dry hit, check the wick and it still looks well saturated. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Welcome! Youve come to the right place.

2 possibilities-

Not enough in the coil it sounds like for sure. Check the wick for tightness to the ends of the coil. I bet its loose enough to show a gap, or expose one when pushed down on.
Or
The tails are full thickness and it will not wick well that way at higher power. Cut at least 50% of the tail off where it bends down. I always trim from the top not Bottom.

Longer tails do essentially nothing for you with rayon.. You only had to do that with cotton because it absorbs the juice for it to work. Like a sponge.. Poor way to supply a coil.. Rayon works much differently almost like a pipe to transport juice quickly and effectively.

Pics would help. If it 'looks' wet, but you are getting dry hits... then I am thinking the coil is getting choked or such. To test the wicking of my builds, I do NOT wet the coil/wick directly... only pour into the drip-well and let the wick do it's thing. After you get the dry-hit... and check the wick... does it feel like it's still tight in the coil or does it feel loose?

VG is flammable.. I was watching dual survival the other day and the dude used his ejuice to start the fire.

Yup - I saw that show also Jeremy.

Utah wants to ban e-cigs but the LDS church has some rules about survival preparedness seems as though they may have a paradox on their hands.

OK...I think that may be the problem. I usually put enough rayon in so I can slide it back and forth...I do notice some gaps between the rayon and the coil. Also when I attempt to thin the wicks there would still be a thick mass at the base of the tail. So if I'm reading correctly I want a tight fit in the coil with 50% reduced thickness in the tails and keep em shorter. I'll post pics later tonight. Follow up question, how does one hand vertical or angled wicks?

It shouldn't slide back and forth easily. You should feel a little resistance when you try to pull it through. But not so tight that you mangle the coil.

Verticals, same thing. Short stubby top with thinned down bottom tail. You'll have to play with how much to thin the bottom tail - that's your juice control. Thin it down too much and it'll feed the coil too well. Then it'll flood (not much vapor when you hit it) and you'll get a lot of backflow. Easiest way I've found to thin tails is to comb through it on my index finger with a pin, without yanking any fibers out from the coil (you can pinch the top of the tail with your thumb if you need to). I think straightening/untangling it helps too.

Yeah it shouldn't slide back and forth very easily at all. It should be faiely snug. unless you grab it close to the coil on both sides and pull apart it tightens the rayon, then you should be able to slide it back and forth with a little resistance.

If you pull on a piece of rayon from far out it will thin the density, or pull apart eventually. If you grip it close you'll see you can not break it. I use a combination of stretching and pulling down to get a tight enough density in the coil from however wide a piece I use.

Were your wick bends down is where you want to clip 50-75% of the wick completely off. The remaining tails will be very thin spread those roots out on the deck...

There are variences with different attys. Usually the length of the full width tail before thinning will be where the wick reaches the chamber walls or near the edge of the deck at the most. I usually run 1/4" full the rest cut to 25% thickness of the main Wick.

Good info on thinning the tails by combing w/a pin, works great for me, too!

BTW, do you still need that nut to hybrid your Aqua atty? 'Cause the offer still stands... was worried my PM about sourcing one from the 'other place' might have been construed as me not wanting to part w/it- which isn't the case at all.

Well... that was an exothermic reaction caused by glycerin reacting with potassium permanganate (or the other way around if you prefer)... it's a very old trick and applicable if you happen to have an old med kit. Most first aid kits etc no longer include glycerin or KMNO4... wish they all included juice and at least an ego ;)

Alright folks, I did rebuild a few of my attys with fresh wicks after taking the advice herein. I was out and about so I picked up some precision scissors which helped matters. With the derringer, I thinned the wicks from the top, about 50%, and snipped them down to just enough to hit the deck. Definitely gotten an improvement both in flow and flavor, and the wick isn't saturated when it's time to redrip. It's dried out on top, and a little damp on the bottom. With my single coil veritas, I thinned from the bottom, and cut the wicks a bit to short, but it does seem to be dripping better. On my vertical dual marquis, I tightened up the amount of wick in the coil, snipped most of the top off, and tried to thin out the bottom tail. This one didn't go so well, I think it's flowing a bit better, but the wick still looks damp when im ready to redrip. It is kind of difficult to thin out the bottom wick since there isnt alot of room to work with. So, I think i'm on the right track. Thank you very much.

Thanks, Cobalt! :) I ended up passing on the Aqua V2 - something else came up that I needed the funds for. Still want one though, so hopefully soon.

210ml right now :)

Tomorrow I'm going to fill out a complain against my post. The enclosure is stuck in Lisbon for over two weeks. I had enough. This isn't even funny anymore :(

I want TC again

Regards
Tony

Sent from my keyboard through my phone or something like that.

That is crazy is there someone you can call? Here I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to contact anyone. It is kind of a realm outside of the USPS.

Have you looked inside your tank yet. Or are you waiting for a Hazmat Suit first. :D
