You had a little too much in the coil. You can pull some strands out if its too tight... If you taste rayon simply seperate a small needle sized piece that you can pull out. Then try it still taste pull another. You will get to the point just shy of tasting rayon. That's where you want to be. When you nail the density you should have hardly and taste of rayon and it should clear in a few hits.
The rayon will reduce in size as its used for a few hours. The wetness and compression in the coil will cause the fibers to come together closer as the air is eliminated. But when the density is right it will be good from the start. Even though it can be fatter then thinner. The factor is the outward pressure of the wick, when its just right the pressure will remain constant..
Of course unflavored will be the least gunk in any setup. Rayon will produce less gunk than anything when the density and tails are right.
Contact coils will gunk more than spaced coils.
I use a darkish 100vg naturally extracted Arabic tobacco. 180ml, no gunking, spaced coil.
Thank you very much for the explaination. I really appreciate it.
I felt like I was using a bit too much. It was kind of a weird senario. For the goblin in particular I wanted enough tail density in the top of the four liquid channels to operate without flooding on the deck. I haven't had any flooding with the rayon so I guess I got that down. But then again since my coil is pretty large for the goblin(7/64) I think I could get away with less next time and still be able to prevent flooding.
I read some of your posts about tail thinning and it worked great in the KFL+. The erl works nicely with rayon too, probably the easiest tank to wick out of what I have. Your wicks look great from the pictures I've seen too. I still like using kohgendo cotton, but I want to work rayon into the builds since I have so much of it.
Is there anything to be said about rayon density along with lower resistance? I've used the KFL up to about 12 watts when I had the mvp, 28 gauge contact coil. The erl I've used at around 15 watts with a 27 gauge contact coil. If I used too much it was much more obvious with those two tanks, both above 1ohm. The goblin on the other hand is using 26g contact coils at 0.5ohms, I'm vaping it 35+watts. I like it keep it between 4.2-4.5 volts. Do you think the rayon compression would be the same for all three tanks? Even though they all vary in resistance I guess it's still very possible the heat flux could be similar. The KFL and erl did use smaller coils, maybe that's why it was more sensitive?
The Golbin is still vaping really great and the unflavored is, well tasteless, like it should be. but I want to try what you suggested and use less to take away the break in period.
