Ah - "Great minds", I was looking at my Case Fan last night and had the same thought about cutting off the fins an frame. That reduce the foot print to almost nothing. Also it should provide more power to the task of spinning the magnets no fan blade resistance (hint, hint).
Do you know how bad I'm itching now to grab my no#7 scalpel and cut off those fins?

:D

Just a suggestion but I would try some small wire cutter and CAREFULLY snip them off starting at least a half inch from the hub. When you get them nipped off as close as you can then take a flat file and polish them right up to the hub. If you can file them up to the hub you won't have to worry about balance.

And I thought you were going to beat me to it first... Where's the competition man? Go cut those fins :D

Don't the fins also serve to cool the motor or are there internal vanes to cool it? Regarding aeration, I thought most people shake and breath their juice when it's fresh, and some even take the caps off to air it out? Anyway, good job if you can use a mag stirrer and not aerate at the same time... and FWIW if aeration wasn't wanted, it's a simple matter of adjusting the RPM of a tumbler to avoid any extra agitation. That- along w/filling the container more, giving a smaller air head, along w/the tightly capped container itself- should aerate less than a mag stirrer.

Well the fins cool the motor BUT since one side is covered with a big lid, the fins aren't doing anything really besides loading the motor and disrupting the motion.

Have a handful of those fans, no problem if they eventually fail.

I'll cut the fins during the weekend and see if it changes anything... Don't really need to as the unit is working just fine but heck... Now I have to try it out lol.

Well I am attempting to find a solution to one more problem. When you put the neodymium mags on the hub of these DC motors it effects the stator field and somewhat degrades the motor performance. (I know no end to this simple project) I notice a fan kit on eBay and what they have done is built a hub cap the extends a cup on each side to hold the magnets so that the inner edge of the circular mags just touch the outer edge of the hub as in tangent to. I would just buy there motor but it is only an 80 mm unit and I don't think it will handle the viscosity of the VG.

Oh woe is me and yes I have been accused of overthinking a problem but considering my lack of success on the first go... well you understand. Besides my new slobbering iron won't be here for a couple of days. You know to replace the one the cat stole..

Wonder if it was this guy wicking it, real fun starts at 2 min on this one but keep watching after that.

OK, now was this a SERIOUS vid that ended up being funny as hell, or was this guy deliberately trying to be funny?
I can never tell with some of these vids.
