Kristin,
with the scotchbrite - it there any funny taste? and does it let the flavor of the juice come through?

I went and picked up some of the blue plug stuff their raving about on the other mod and I just can not get over the taste and I can only barely taste the cotton candy juice I am using. I've washed with soap, boiled, washed with soap again, and boiled it again and I think it still tastes funny (although I will say its very tough stuff). So I was wondering if the scotch brite pad has any taste to it.

Well... it doesn't to me.. and that's all I use.

In one of the other threads someone was commenting about the difficulty of refilling a plug-style mod while "on the go". Certainly that is one of the downsides of this style. And, as I mentioned, my efforts to make a unit that refilled from the mouthpiece end has failed.. at least for now.

But, I use one trick that might be helpful. After I install my plug the first time (I use the blue pad), I will stick the end of a paperclip right down through the center of it. Well, actually I use an NHaler dental pick.... but the paperclip will do the same thing. This makes a hole right in the middle of the pad. This hole has absolutely no effect on the liquid feeding characteristics of the plug! But.. when it comes time to pull the plug out, I just stick the end of a paperclip into that hole again, and tilt the plug out. The plug will stay on the end of the paperclip. I'll refill the cartridge, then use the paperclip to put the plug back in. Rarely if ever do my fingers actually touch the plug.

I keep the un-bent paperclip in my PCC.

I've found a new material you might be interested in checking out. I was thinking about blue foam which is very similar to the prefilter on a vacuum cleaner or air purifier. I looked down at the register in my floor and realized I've got some vent filters left over. They slide into the vent and filter the air at each exit point.

Anyway, the material is kind of like sheets of polyfill and nothing seems to work as well as good old polyfill. It's just so stringy. I noticed the thickness did vary a little. About 3-4mm thick. Very fragile. It makes for a very uniform filling material and I made a perfect cart from it. And might work well for a straw mod. No time to play tonight, but that means I get to think about it all day tomorrow.

I got it at Walmart but should be available at hardware stores where the keep the air filters. I'm sure there are lots of brands out there...

Here are some pictures. Apparently you might be able to buy it in sheets or rolls. The first picture looks like the perfect thickness.

That's it. I think it may work better than the thick buff puff or the coarse Cerama Brye pad I've been using. Really wish I had the thicker stuff... Good thing I took Friday off.

P.S. I've got so many variations of this mod going I can't tell what's what anymore!
P.P.S. And it's hard to be very manly when you're constantly yelling, "where are my tweezers!"
P.P.S. I think I also just invented the stawless straw mod!

I thought of using something like that long ago.. even the cheap furnise filters.. Then thought of what they probably teat it with to work so good and forgot about it.

If this stuff isint treated with any chemicals it may be worth trying out.

Then again its Poly..

Let us know if you get that scratchy feeling in your throat again ok? 8-o

Yeah - I realized that it needs to be rinsed out before use! I'll report if there are any "scratchy throat" issues!

I just rinse it with water. There is a slight taste, but not any worse than with poly - I think it's more the PG than anything else. I get a really good taste of the flavor I'm using. It may depend on the flavor you're using.

So far, 3 refills with the blue pad and it hasn't been sucked into the atty yet!! It's also much easier to cut a plug.

I also took the tip one poster said and looked for the directional fibers this time and sure enough, they're there! You have to turn the pad sideways, same as the BP - so the side of the pad should be the top of your plug!

Pete,

My ACE had them over by the hammers and other things that hurt when you hit a person with them. Same place where they had center punches and hand chisels. The punches are made by "General" and they had them in about 10 different sizes.... shrinked to a card and hanging on the peg board.

Hope that helps. If it doesn't, next time I'm up there I can get the SKU.
Thanks for you response Scottbee. I did find them at Ace but wouldn't you know it, the size I needed was missing!

OK, now I take it back - I'm now getting a funky plastic/chemical taste with the blue scrubbie. I don't remember that previously.

Scottbee - do you recess the plug a bit or have it flush with the end of the cart? I had it flush and then recessed it about 2mm, but I'm still getting a really strong taste when the cart starts to get low. It could be the mint chocolate chip flavor is reacting differently than my vanilla coffee did?

I'm back to using the BP plug, because it never had a bad flavor for me - it's worth putting up with the occasionaly slip into the atty!!

Anyhow, I cut the straw even shorter and tapered the end of the plug to slide into the straw - maybe that'll keep it from getting sucked into the atty....

Also, I forgot how the blue scrubbie plug tends to get "crispy" or stiff after a couple of days - the BP doesn't do that, either.

Sorry I'm flipping back and forth so much!!

I should order some of that blue foam Eclypse is using - maybe the two mods combined is the magic formula!

For those "thinkin' folks" among you who are following this and other related threads.... and are contemplating your own plugs or feeding systems:

Allow me to interject this (giving you something to ponder)... the way that the plug media allows liquid to "flow" through it is very important. If the weave or granularity of the media is too "loose", the liquid will flow right through it and flood the atomizer. If the weave or granularity is too "tight", it will create a barrier and the liquid will not feed the atomizer quick enough and you will get starvation. That is probably obvious. What is perhaps not obvious is that the saturated media also has to control the rate and method for air to get back into the cartridge to replace the depleted liquid (recall the old "straw mod"). The "vacuum" on the back-side of the plug (non atomizer side) is critical to proper function.

Here's how I know this. Below please find a picture of a 2-piece cartridge that I designed and built in order to allow me to refill the unit from the mouthpiece end:

Img_0156.jpg

This cartridge is based on my "tried and true" blue Scotch-Brite scrubbie pad and axial spring. The mouthpiece can be removed in order to expose the bask side of the cartridge "well". There is a hole in the bottom of the well and you can directly drip liquid right in there. When the mouthpiece part is re-installed, a foam gasket re-seals the hole. Here is a picture of the unit installed on a 510 with the mouthpiece removed. You can see the spring and blue pad through the hole.

Img_0163.jpg

(Kristin: I apologize for the picture. Yes, my hands are dirty, I need a manicure.. and yes, that's a little blood there on my finger. I often injure myself when working on the lather or mill).

Now I know that the blue scrubbie and spring mod works exceptionally well.... but if I drip liquid into that hole, it will flow down the spring... THROUGH the blue pad.... down through the atomizer... and out through the vent slots between the atomizer and the battery. Every single drop will run right through the system like ***** through a goose. In other words, a vented cartridge will not work in this case and it must be sealed for proper liquid flow control.

And although my removable mouthpiece does seal that hole when it is re-installed... I can't quickly get the 12+ drops in there and put the mouthpiece back on before the load leaks down into the atomizer.

So yeah... this was a failed experiment to say the least. But it was an educational experience and maybe it will help the "thinkers" as they are pondering their next plug or cartridge modification.

This has made a world of difference in the wicking so far. ( I'm using an 801)

I'm hopeful that this will be a eureka moment for me as I am one of those who attempts to top off carts at a red light.

Thanks kristin, for hitting that point again! I was starting to get frustrated.

I use a combination with great results for my 901. First, I cut a straw approx. 10mm and notch both ends. Next, is your BP approx. 2-3mm thick. Last is the blue foam slug that Eclyse uses.

I tried using the straw plus the BF slug, but unless I got the size almost perfect, I got too much juice in my mouth or a flooded atty. The thin slice of BP holds back the juice enough where I do not have to be so precise with the BF slug measurements. I generally toss the slug after a couple of days and stick in a new one.

I have used this combo for about 10 days and it works great.

Using this with my m401. Used a straw that fits the cart perfectly and the cut a little on the top to make a support for the plug. Using the original polyfill for that. I'll post a pic later to illustrate what I mean with "support for the plug".

It's working great. I only go through 3 carts per day this way (I'm a light vaper I suppose :D)

Kristen,
Thanks for this mod I tried the spring mod but couldnt get it to work as well as I wanted. also I have ADD so I didn't have the patience to fit the spring just right.
I just tried this this afternoon and it is so easy to do and works even though all I had for filler was fluval. I just cut the straw a little shorter and packed the filler a little tighter. It so far works well with all of my liquids except for some 6mg dr pepper i got that seems to be realy thin.
I could probably pack the fluval tighter but don't want to lose more cart space. This is the best idea yet in my opinion and easy to get right.
Thanks again.

Kristin, I think it is. I've been using the straw/blue foam since yesterday and so far it's been great. Figuring out the right size foam piece to cut can be frustrating but once you do, it works quite well.

I'll be spending a couple hours tonight whipping up about 10 carts for a holiday road trip so I'll know for sure after that.
