thanks to all for the pics-please keep them coming. i haven't managed to coil anything properly... yet. maybe one or two brief, dry hitting coils, but nothing mindblowingly awesome yet. it seems to me that rba's are the way to go, but i'm having better luck with cartos for now. i just haven't gotten there yet. but i am amassing quite a collection of rba's, coil, silica, mesh, etc., and i won't give up too easily.

if i do, i'll let you know when i start selling my crap off.

I like your attitude :) My first attempts weren't the best either, but I don't think any of us's are. But I knew that if some of the others could do it, I could too and I did LOL. The best learning tool I found was Zen's video on setting up the zap. I just did exactly like he did and found success.

My main piece of advice... make sure all parts of the coil are touching the wick...any gaps, even the tiniest will result in the burnt taste that so many complain about. I can ALWAYS tell when my coil isn't right and it's always a tiny part of the coil that isn't touching the wick. I do better hand wrapping my wicks instead of wrapping around something else and then trying to slide the wick into the coil. Tension is the name of the game when it comes to attaching the top wire to the positive post.. too tight or too loose will result in the "hot leg" at the pos post that again, so many complain about.

Practice Practice Practice :D

Thanks Thrasher. I appreciate the notes. I will try anything to get it right. I have something going on my did clone, but the taste is rough.

I never did have much success with a did clone.. none that lasted anyway. The did clones have really crappy insulators and they are easy to push up and tear and cause a hard short. When it worked it was awesome but it never worked reliably for very long.

I use my RSST the most, it's super easy to setup and get everything right.. I love my DIDs (the real ones) but they are tricky to get the wire wrapped properly around the wick because the negative screw sits up so high and the nuts on the pos post make it tricky to get the tension right without pulling the wire too tight.. I can do it, but it takes longer and involves more frustration than the RSST.

And you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good rba.. sure the DIDs are better made and all that but the RSST, while the metal is thinner, is made pretty well too.

LarryPer and sgenn99, Just keep at it. You can do it. Watch RBA videos and take your time.

It may be difficult in the beginning but once you learn how to coil and wick it becomes almost second nature.

To me the hard part was to find the right combo of mesh and wick. I used 500, 400, 325 mesh and found that 400 worked best for me and for the type of juice I use. The same for 30g and 32g. I found that 32g worked great. But I still like to experiment with 30g or 500mesh. I may even try ceramic wicks.

I think that is the beauty of RBA's, you have many choices on how to set up your RBA.

Another trick you can try is to coil the wire onto the wick and put some juice on the coils and do a few burns with a lighter or torch. This will give a little crust on the coils to help prevent hot spots.

Thanks for the "likes" on the Roller guys. I like the looks of the RM RBA so much that I might just put my ice matte inner tube back on now that I have another RM RBA on the way. Probably leave the IM switch off though, and keep the natural matte switch on for an "accent" LOL.

As far as the stock air hole, I find it airy enough. I actually find it a bit TOO airy. I like the draw on the RSST better. What I found on the RM, is if I offset the air hole from the wick just a "tick" I mean BARELY, it really brings the draw and flavor to just where I like it. Exsctly like...the RSST! So now I like it MORE than the RSST. Maybe this IS because the air hole is too low? I dunno? I'm no genius with this stuff no matter how hard I pretend to be online.

I've set mine up so many times its ridiculous... Coils burn perfectly dry add juice and suddenly things start shorting... I think its my juice though since its orange there might be some citric acid in it which would make the juice slightly conductive... So frustrating that I actually set silica up on it >.<

this is good advice. taking your time is key. slow and steady wins the race. larry and sniffle dont give up either. watch lots of youtube videos, even if its not for your device. most gennys run on the same principles. adn once you finally get your geny set up nicely, the mesh and coil should last for a loooong time.

Don't give up. It takes a bit more practice than one would think. I've only been on RBA's/RBD's for about a month now, and sometimes I make a cherry in one shot, other times I have to tinker for a good hour to get everything to work right.

Sometimes I make one that looks great, but vapes like crap. Others look like crap and make clouds of warm awesomeness!

Even when I get it right, I am re-building quite frequently just to learn... And know this: even when I head off to work with a self-built coil, I always have an extra cartomizer in my pocket as a failsafe.

EDIT: check out Jacobs Online. I bought close to 100' of different nichrome wire for under $20. With that, you'll have no fear of running out. Just tinker with different wraps, gauges, etc until you find what works on what device.

I use 30ga on my RM, 32 on my octopus, and twisted 34 on my mini cobra clone.

Temco is a great supplier for Kanthal. i got 25' of 28g for less than 5 bucks. free shipping. i also got 100' of NR wire for like $8. my 32g was either 50' or 100' for around five bucks.

Mechs work great for working out shorts you just have to be careful with your batteries

I would go without the kick while working out the shorts just to make sure you don't accidentally break it

^ that.

I use my vv and meter to check resistance, then pulse it on my mech to adjust the coil. Then it's back to the vv or keep it on the mech dependant on what ohms I build it at.

I've found that I prefer about 1.5-1.7
