Did you get it all worked out?

i'm still trying... i just can't seem to keep it together long enough to find that flavor and vapor that everybody raves about just yet. i'll get there... i've got plenty of mesh and kanthal, and i'm hellbent on figuring this out!

thanks for all the advice and encouragement, everybody. it means a lot.

I just re-wicked/coiled mine using 30ga and 400 mesh wrapped around 2mm silica. The coil I just removed was giving me a funky metallic taste. I swore I worked out all hot spots. Guess not. New coil, so far, so good.

funky metalic taste is definitely hotspot/hotlegs. there is big difference with dry wick hit and dry hit from hotspot/hotlegs. if your coil that's touching wick isnt glowing when your wick is wet, check the legs (coil connecting to the post part) sometimes they are nasty too. hotlegs normally caused by too much distance between your wick to the post, over tighten coil, or shorts

Yeah. After close to a month of failing, succeeding, failing again (wash, rinse, repeat)... I finally got it.

Try doing a silica build. It is far more forgiving, and tastes just as good as a well-wrapped mesh wick.

I've been using my drippers all day at work, and they are all silica

Give me a few mins and i'll wrap up a silica setup for my RM and post a pic or 2 for you.

Not pretty, but highly functional:

Nope. Used the normal posts. It can be done either way really.

Edit: the wick material is 2mm silica with 4 strands at the coil. I just did it like a standard bowtie like I would on my drippers, then feed the tail into the wick hole. Adding a drop of juice to the tail will keep it stuck together while you try to insert it.

Last night after a couple hours of tinkering I finally got my z-atty clone firing pretty well. Not quite as good as the you tubes but pretty close. This morning after breakfast knocked it over on the table and broke the crap glass tube. So now I just ordered one of these Rich man's. I want to try a wire rope wick when it gets here. What thickness should I order or what is the diameter of the wick hole?

PS Xobe that looks pretty sweet might have to try that too!

Wick hole on RM is 2.5mm (3/32"). 2mm silica works great. I just tore out the silica from those pics and did a solid mesh. I should have unrolled and taken the measurement of the mesh for you guys.

A silica/mesh hybrid works great too. Just sleeve some 2mm silica in about 2 layers of mesh and it's perfect. Ot is a bit harder to coil since the wick is much softer than a solid. Make sure you dont dig the coils into the wick.
