I will be putting as much information as I can about the original ScubaQu concept up in this thread.

This thread will be to discuss issues and potential design improvements.

I have not seen anything to indicate Scubabatdan voiced any ill feelings about his original thread that evolved greatly out of the original context. However on behalf of myself and others I would like to offer an apology to Scubabatdan for straying so far off his original topic.

It is pioneers and veterans like Scubabatdan and BJ43 that make great vaping a reality to so many. Thanks for all they and others do :toast:

Here is Scubabatdan's original Pyrex SS Hybrid Wick thread (Later named ScubaQu)

Here is BJ43's Dan's scubaqu only thread - This is a results thread
Standard genesis with a pyrex or quartz tube on different wicks. Post your results here so others can see and learn.

ScubaQu:
As I understand it.....using a glass tube (Pyrex, Fused Quartz, others names) between the wick and coil on a genesis type atomizer.

ScreenShot483.jpg

I believe the intent was to eliminate the need for oxidation when using SS wicks and the inherent issues such as shorts/hot spots/etc. as well as possibly less build up and contamination of the coil. Overall a more user friendly and longer lasting atomizer configuration.

Some links to Pyrex and Fused Quartz suppliers that don't have a minimum order.

*Caution some using the thin wall Pyrex have been able to melt it as well as indicating that it is very fragile*

It should be stated that this is DIY R&D and there are inherent risks when cutting and using glass tube.

BJ43 gave a great description on cutting this thin wall tube.
I have a breadboard that has some grooves in it just the right size to hold and measure the tube. A light score with a mini triangle file and then snap away from the score. Real easy this way.

Diamond files, manicure files, and diamond cut off wheels have been listed as tools used to score the glass tubes with.

Edit - JPoodles brought up a good point
any glass cut by hand and not annealed will have stress fractures

(Hope they work) Below are links to searches in the original thread for posts by Bedazzle and Wharf Rat, both gave good insights on Pyrex and FQ

I think that should cover the fundamentals of the ScubaQu and most of the questions I have seen commonly asked.

Lets open up the discussion of issues and potential design improvements.

The most common issue I have seen raised is air flow.

Some vape veterans don't seem to be having any air flow issues, and have indicated that it is likely a fundamental setup issue and not one specific to the ScubaQu configuration.

quite likely...funny thing that...when I first got to play w a scubagen it was EZPZ but I was not stressed out...I'm going to play w this only because it addresses an issue I figure most who have issues w a gen wick have...shorts...right now w my nerves shot I can't coil a gen wick w/o shorts to save my life lol... this solves that in one easy sweep...airflow is a simple matter of a little adjustment....

another thread... really?

could we just keep all the info on one thread please.

if you have a good idea, its just best to post it there, not your own thread where its just going to be ignored.

I guess its true you can't make everyone happy.....Not sure the value added by the post other than to contradict your statement of being ignored.

If this thread is ignored....than it is ignored....not sure why that is a problem???

Ok Bap going back to the air flow problem, did you get that bottom hole RB in yet? I ordered one to because there cheap and I wont feel bad about modding it if I have too. I have a feeling that the bottom flowing air is gona help a lot.

The Smoktech R-Tank....its a cheap one that is for sure. Right now I have it setup at home as a horizontal coil as it was intended with 4 threads bamboo (both ends in the tank), 2.5mm x 2.2mm Pyrex, ~2.2omh coil. Right now I guess I would say I'm breaking it in real slow.....mainly out of frustration. It seems to produce good vapor at a very specific temp, but when I put the cap on and actually try to vape with it I get very little vapor. If I push it then it just heats up and tastes like bumbum. Ohh and the thin metal cap gets plenty hot too. I have it on an itaste mvp VV, I tried breaking it in with low volts for a while at 3.7v and then moved up. It tastes bad real fast much after 4.3v.

I'm going to try plugging the center hole from the bottom with a carto condom plug and drill a hole in the cap and see if that helps.

I haven't tried a vertical genesis style with the bamboo....only 400SS that wouldn't wick

I'm going to try to get my scratch built atty put together to have something better to test with. My 635SS should be here today.

But work isn't helping (cad server just tanked so ill probably be here all night)

I'm not sure if you have the same Smoktech as I do, but definitely plug the center hole. The ones I set up as Gennies, I have drilled a hole in the side of the polypropylene about at the same height as with other G attys. You may want to hold off on that location in order to play with some different heights or in the actual top of the cap.

It is a little different than mine, in that the tank on mine extends over the top plate and there is a cap that then fits on the tank top (the driptip is built right into this top cover). But the principle is essentially the same. You would want to plug the battery end hole and then drill a hole in the metal top collar to simulate a Genesis. If I can find or take a picture of it, I'll post.

If you look closely, you can see the hole I drilled in the tank.

I follow you....I was hopping that the hole up the middle might work better on a vertical single wick configuration.....but then when the tube was added and I had vapor coming out both ends of the tube I wondered if it would be better just to keep the coil horizontal and let the vapor come out the ends.

I editted to add pics; I use it with the wicks vertically, both ss and silica and works very well. I bought 2 of these before the DUDs ever came out, just to try my hand at Genesis style attys.

Just want to clarify...so I don't stomp on the thread's intent...is this thread open to "variations on the theme" like the internal heater (i.e. needle heater) or do you want to keep it to strictly glass tube with wick inside?

I believe it is OK - bapgood will probably chime in and let you know.

I don't really know :)

I'm all for sharing ideas, however I started this thread in an attempt to respect the ScubaQu concept and make it easier for those trying to find specific information and help with ScubaQu that may be overwhelming to find in Scubabatdan's original thread and would clutter up BJ43's results thread.

I do not view this as "my thread" and as such I will ask anyone following this thread to PM me there opinions. (so we don't clutter this thread up...in case anyone does want to use it :) )

My gut says to keep things clean and organized here for people new and looking for help with a ScubaQu setup. That we start a new thread (yes another thread).....something like Freeforall Atty Thinktank Thread.....where ideas can offered without worry of infringing on someones intent.

Like I said....I don't really know....Let me know what ya'll think

Is it possible to have sub-threads of a thread here? Not sure I've ever seen it, but whatever. I'm interested in all 3 threads. Might be kind of hard to track down one or the other by browsing, but I guess subscribing would take care of that problem. It's just that I don't like subscribing to some threads because I get hammered with notifications. Anyways, I do think it's a good idea to separate directions, bapgood.
