Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.
I spend very little these days , i never spent a lot to begin with because when you don't have much you can't spend much . Even when i had money i buy very little because to me , there is nothing groundbreaking that warrants another purchase.

Until temp control hit the market every mod did the exact same thing , heat your juice , only differences were wattage and appearance which i never cared a lot about.

I buy a mod that handles the wattage range i vape at and i'm done , when something groundbreaking comes a long (not fancy looking mods, they all still do the same thing) i look to see if it can really make a difference in my vaping .

If not i don't buy it , i don't buy any juices because i make my own and i have only bought a few toppers that suit me and i'm perfectly fine.

I am never swayed with bling and needing to have the hot new item , i know what i like and stick to it.

240 ml bottles of liquid last me 40-50 days and cost $40 from ITCvapes, about 80 cents a day. DIY should cost me about 20 cents a day. I rebuild $8 RDA's from Fasttech. A couple hundred dollars a year will keep my mods up to date plus a bit more for batteries. $1 a day should afford a quality vaping experience unless you require expensive liquid and like to buy new toys.

A real honest answer? Last time I posted this in a different forums I got flamed a lot for whatever reason.

My sums for the last 22 month

Expenses (buying stuff): $5900
Income (selling stuff): $1850

Net: $4050
Stuff at home: around $1500

Net loss (liquids, loss from buying/selling): $2550

Smoking expenses would have been around $2640 .. so not a big difference but a nice hobby :)

Initial Set up from local BM - $120 - 30w Istick and Atlantis v2 (would have been about $60 online).
DIY Juice Materials - probably $150 in total over four orders and some local finds.
Various other mods, batteries and chargers (50w, 40w and 200w) - $220
Looking into my collection of premiums/house juices probably another - $250-$300.

So initially approx. $900 for enough gear and supplies to last me another 6 months at least.
I will probably not need a new mod for awhile so that expense will go away for a bit until the urge catches me again.
I've hit on a couple DIY flavors that I really enjoy and the premiums I am enjoying now are lower price. So that cost will drop to maybe $50-$100 a month.

I would spend approx. $13 a day for my cigs and snuff or about $4750/year.

If I had it to do all over again honestly the only two things I would have changed is starting off with a Kanger Subox Mini Starter Kit for about $60 and realized earlier that most house ejuice is not worth my time.

TLDR:
Cost Comparison for Me:
Initial 2 Months vaping: $900 Initial 2 Months Smoking: $780
Expected Next 10 Months (worst case): $1000 Next 10 Months Smoking: $3965
Savings first year: $2850

Note: I'm saving so much maybe I'll go ahead and buy myself the mod and the RDA I was looking at earlier :)

Sitting down, facing forward.
My expenses just went through the roof. I decided to build my own mods using DNA chips. Between a drill press, cross slide vice, brill bits, milling bits, hardware, materials and odds and ends it's run into a few hundred bucks, for one mod. That doesn't include the time involved either. But, when I'm done, I'll have a mod built the way I want it and unlike any other available.

OK guys, time to fess up.
I started vaping a few weeks/months ago now. I love it. Vaping really is the answer.
I wouldn't go back to smoking cigarettes now if you paid me.
But, I am poor. Honestly poor. I live in the country on a tiny fixed income, basically other peoples "lunch money".
And its still costing me a fortune! I could have bought a 2 year supply of "Indian reservation" analogs for what I've spent so far, and I am combing for rock bottom prices all the time.
I found a wonderful, not really commercial dealer in Texas (sells off her dining room table) of all places, who treats me great!
Discounts on everything and free samples galore etc etc. So I'd never complain about her.
I am using single bottom coil tanks, drooling over twin coils, but what-am-I Rockefeller? Going from the standard 2ohm to 1.8ohm coils in a standard clearomizer makes a huge difference. If you are brand new at this try the lower ohm coils, trust me.
I made a dreadful mistake early on. I started with 650ohm batteries. These are just too small. No way they make enough vapor for anyone's satisfaction. Wasted money there. I find that 1100's at least sizzle the coil and don't cost hardly anything more. Once again if you are new and want to enjoy vaping, but not spend a lot of money? start with 1100's at least.
Some of the regular suppliers from the site here have sales!! I found a couple selling 10ml bottles of juice for 2 bucks apiece! 6 or 8 dollars for a 15ml bottle of juice just sucks!! Watch out for that. I stumbled across one I simply love. I ordered it along with some others (most of which I didn't like), and it turned out to be my total favorite of anything! Even better than Cosmic Fog's Milk and Honey, which is also great, but its very costly. I just ordered 8 more bottles. :) heh

So vapers, whenever I read the forum I keep reading buy this $200 worth of gear or that $225 and upgrade to this or that. Does anyone actually pay attention to how much money they are spending to vape? Or does it just seem like unfettered money spending from here?
Is there any really good hardware that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars?

And how much a month do you really spend? Add it up, be honest. :)
yours Scott

I bought an Ego 1100mah kit (charger, tank, and battery with case) for 9.99 off eBay including free shipping. I purchase eliquid from the local gas station for 4.25 a bottle (which is including tax) (they have cheesecake, I love it!) The battery lasts great, the tanks and chargers don't.. I find myself replacing a tank due to leaking on average of once every two weeks...so I have to buy more tanks, which I purchase in 10 packs for 13.00 (again on eBay) and the occasional battery charger for 2.00 a piece (those last about three or four months before needing replaced).

After 1 year of vaping I needed to buy a new battery.. so I got another kit for 8.99 w/0 the case - including free shipping..

all in all I spend in a month, eliquid included, less than one carton of off-brand cigarettes cost (which I was spending 27.00 per carton for off brand...and I used to go through a carton a week!)

That said, going through tanks can be a pain if nothing else, so I am considering buying a kanga tank at this point, which is why I am here to talk to others about whether or not they leak and how often they need replaced.. (I am not a repair man and have no intention of learning tank repair.. I just want one to last as long as a battery does!)

But yeah, if you play your cards right you will spend so much less than smoking!

This is my costs of May 1st (quit date, start vaping) through now. I keep a spread sheet every time I spend money vaping. I've upgraded my mod and tanks, and bought juices. I'm just starting out on DIY so I'm thinking my cost will come down since once I find good recipes since I won't be buying juices as much (right now I'm supplementing my DIY juices with pre-made juices.) My "would have spent on cigarettes" cost is calculated by the QuitNow! app on my phone.

Online: Juice (freebie won) $ -
B&M: Juice/coils $ 22.32
Online: DIY starter kit (freebie won) $ -
Online: Istick30w/nautilus/juice $ 72.65
B&M: Juice $ 12.84
B&M: Ego-C Twist Battery $ 25.66
Online: Juice and coils $ 32.50
B&M: Juice $ 18.19
B&M: Juice / coils / Kanger EVOD 2 Tank $ 31.51
B&M: ECTO Starter Kit / Juice $ 52.42

Total spent on vape $ 268.09
Would have spent on Cigarettes $ 722.00
Money Saved $ 453.91

So, in ~3.5 months I've:
Spent $76.60 a month on vape
Would have spent $206.28 a month on analogs
Saved $129.68 a month by switching

I'm poor too. it's a struggle spending money on coils and the "oh, my battery died" pretty much broke my bank when I spent a ridiculous $25 on an ego twist because that's the closest B&M and I needed a battery STAT. . . but overall, keeping track of my spending has really helped me out by reminding me how much I'm NOT spending on analogs. Plus, the DIY should drop those juice costs, then I'll just be buying coils.

I'm also a tootlepuffer, so I'm only going though 4ml of juice at the most per day. Keeping my juice consumption low has allowed me to not buy as much. Plus, sometimes I'll buy a juice at max and a higher nicotine level and dilute it down to 50/50 and my nic level. I've noticed for a lot of these juices you don't really loose too much flavor by diluting. . . but that's just me.
