Doesn't nicotine have a shelf life? I thought I heard that it did and it was pretty short. (don't mean to be bearing bad news but I once thought of storing up some nicotine and remember that I gave up on it because of something like that).

It sort of depends on what you mean by shelf life. An electronic cigarette sitting at a gas station is not the same as a bottle of nicotine in a pg or vg solution. With respect to just bottled nicotine, storage life is about 1 to 2 years (PG lasts longer than VG).

Duane,

Yes it does right along with PG, VG and flavorings.

I don't know if it was My Freedom Smokes or one of the other DIY houses but they were talking like two years if kept refrigerated. As I read on they talked about -20F I don't think my refrigerator goes that low.

This is the first time I have seen this subject come up but every time I read about someone with a giant stash I want to warn them about the self life but then I have second thoughts about raining on their parade.

I would think this to be a common topic on the DIY threads but maybe not.

PS - I don't really remember if the shelf life was one or two years and I am guessing at the -20F but it was something like that because I remember thinking that my freezer section doesn't go that low.

By the way I have a bottle of 50/50 24mg 120 ml size spare for when need to cut some juice that I keep in the regular part of the refrigerator. I thought after a couple of days it would be like molasses in December but much to my surprise it doesn't seem much thicker than at room temp and I keep my refrigerator just above freezing.

Would a never thunk WA would get like that...a state that has all but legalized things that are considered evil in most of the rest of the country, are trying to kill off vaping...
Yeah, that's what really throws me for a loss

What really sucks, is I buy most of my DIY flavorings and nic from ecigexpress, who is based out of WA :(

I am with you on this one Rebel. I was going to mention that earlier but I could think of a way to word it that wouldn't get me in trouble with ECF. Excellent job Mr. Rebel.

Did I mention that my Grandmother called me Rebel for my entire life until she passed away. She was never too happy that her New York daughter married a Sailor from Alabama.

The shelf life of nicotine used for making e-liquid is limited to when the PG or VG breaks down.

PG properly stored lasts for two years:
Safe Handling & Use

VG properly stored lasts at a minimum for 1 year, but can last up to two years. I'm the type that assumes worst case, so I'd go with one year.

This of course also assumes you're not using it, in which case opening the bottle will expose the product to oxygen and shorten its lifespan. I guess you could dose it with some argon to slow down the oxidization, but regardless you can't hoard a bunker's worth of supply. ;)

George:
I've been keeping my e liquid in the regular refrigerator too and for my standared 100-200 ml bottles at the rate I use the juice I don't notice too much degradation. Outside of the fridge is another issue, so I have a small bottle for dripping at my desk and just refill as necessary.

I freeze my nic at around -38C (-36.4f) and I also freezed flavored eLiquid (strait menthol) for 4 months without any change in flavor.

You have one cold freezer. Mine only goes to about -18C I think. Maybe I should start keeping everything in there anyway. Certainly better than 1 or 2 C.

Yeah. That one is in the basement. Long term storage. My regular freezer goes to -18C like yours.

I'm pretty sure pg will be ok for more than 24 months. That period is indicated for storage temperatures below 40c (104f). At -18C (or even - 37c) everything moves slower so I'm pretty sure it will last quite longer before it goes bad.

Speaking of which... How do you know your pg is bad? Taste? Visually? What happens to 'bad' pg?

Regards
Tony

I start noticing a funky taste. Could be my imagination but it's repeatable.

"Propylene glycols will degrade slowly in the presence of oxygen. Metal contamination, acidic or basic contaminants and higher temperatures all accelerate the degradation reactions. Typical oxidation products are aldehydes, ketones, acids and dioxolanes. A strong odor, higher acidity, higher ultra-violet (UV)-absorption or high color are indicators that a propylene glycol has been not been stored properly and has started to degrade." - Dow Chemical Company

Yeah I have heard nic lasts nearly forever if kept in the freezer. VG and PG should still be available for making soap and the flavors are actually food flavoring. I think they have the shortest shelf life but I have used some that have been left at room temp that tastes just as good as new. WA isn't going to try to stop vaping they just want to make a bundle of money off of it same with the herb for recreational purposes it is legal but there is a 75% tax on it. It's all about the money they are losing by people quitting cigarettes. They plan on I forget how many millions of dollars by putting this tax in and 60% goes into the general fund, their wallets.

This is not good news for me. I was planning on moving from SoCal to the Tacoma, WA area in a few years. :( I guess I could just drive down to Portland, OR where there is no sales tax. Well, at least until they change their laws.

Yep and with the ease of Paypal you can get what you want through a friend in another state and have him ship it to you. They aren't going to be able to go through every package that comes into this state from a private party.

You may have to take up DIY though. It's a piece of cake. And how are they going to enforce this with products that come from other countries which is where I get all my flavoring from.
2legs I have not yet ventured into the world of DIY but maybe it is time to start visiting those forums here on ECF. I spend a fortune on ejuice these days so maybe the time has come.
