I have some questions about the nife48/52 from zivipf. I ordered their 48 which is supposedly 52 in 26gand 28g by mistake. After recieving it I found the wire to thin and springy to use in my temple as u want big builds. I meant to get the 22 and maybe 24g.

So i decided i would twist some to try it out and the curve from wire wizard seems to be off. It would continue to heat up for 10 seconds or so and not hit max temp causing a bad metal burnt taste. I tried with both the 26 and 28 several builds 4mm dia 8-12 wraps. It was very unpleasant. Not like burning cotton flavor but you could taste the char on the wire. I would also get nasty flavor from quick 2-3 second pulls as well, before this wire should hit max temp at low wattage, just a strong charcoal/metal taste.

Wondering what i did wrong as people seem to love this stuff, used the nifethal52 csv from wire wizard straight to the dna200. So far im not impressed but need to get my hands on some thicker stuff so i can wrap it tight like kanthal. Im still looking for my TC wire as Ti has not worked out for me and SS seems like a pain. I get great performance from nickel but it is also a PIA. Im going to order some lower guage from zivipf tomorrow but does anyone have any suggestions or tips for this wire? I should note i also pulsed the coils dry to make sure they were firing good before wicking, perhaps this is why i taste severe charcoal.

Thanks!

It sounds like there's no wick somewhere on the coil causing a hot spot or maybe a leg has a hot spot. Also, try using just the TCR value 0.004036 instead of the curve. I've not twisted any NiFe yet so I don't have any experience with it... are you making tight twists or loose?

I use the 48(52) in 26 gauge along with Steamengine's CSV for NiFe52 with total success.
I do torch the wire before winding and have a slightly harder time pulsing out the hot spots on a contact coil (than Kanthal). Running a rod back and forth through the coil seems to do better than squeezing it.

I find I had terrible trouble with contact NiFe48 coils, getting the hot spots out. You really have to work the coil, dry firing it out of TC mode to glow the coil, compressing it with ceramic tweezers, and there are still hotspots, so then you have to strum the coil. Eventually it will glow nice and even from inside out. At this stage, cool the coil down to room temp, run it under cold water, so you can do your initial cold resistance calibration. Once done you should be alright.

I think ill try some claptons this afternoon and see how it fares wrapped in 32g kanthal. Regarding the hot legs I couldnt find any. I was getting nasty taste but no red hotspots that what confused me. This is why i thought it was problem with the csv cause the temp would rise on the device but not hit max temp (when it definately was after 10 seconds at 70w) but still no visable hotspots, very strange.

Getting bummed with all the tc wire, cant seem to find a good compromise between ease of use and performance. I only want tc in my dripper as (imo) i find it useless in my tanks. I can throw some big kanthal claptons in there and never worry about dry hits or hot legs and i can visually see when the juice is depleted. Oh well, ordered some 24g from zivipf this morning at least that should be easier to work with.

I decided to jump on the NiFe48/52 bandwagon. Ordered from Zivipf.de 82' of 25ga, 26ga, and decided to give their new 30ga flat wire. I thought I might give a try to wrapping some of that on top of a 26ga Ti to try some crazy stuff out. lol Kinda a mini Clapton of some sorts.

If anybody is interested in purchasing from Zivipf.de, I found a working coupon code of "zivipf88" which will give you an extra 8% off discount. I will say their web site sucks! Couldn't get it to work with Chrome, it crashed with IE 11, and crashed with Firefox but it did that upon hitting the final payout button so it all finally went through as I found out with confirmation emails. Frustrating after trying to register several times having to enter in all my information.

The Vat was removed after I was identified as not being in the EU, and with the discount it cost me $34.83 with shipping using PayPal. Not too bad for 3 82' rolls of NiFe48 wire and having to ship it across the pond.

Try this and I promise you'll be happy with the results. Clean your wire and then build a dual 26ga 2.5mm 8.5/9 wrap coils. should ohm out to .12-.14Ω. I'd make them slightly spaced, but that's up to you. That build may sound wimpy and boring, but it efficiently utilizes all 70 watts you have. The coils will respond well to temp setting changes & they will hit temp limit before the end of your draw every time. To understand why this wimpy build will work so well read on.

As for the crappy taste I'd definitely wipe it down with Isapropyl before winding your coils. Pretty sure the Zivipf is Chinese wire (often very dirty). I emailed them and asked straight up to confirm if it was genuine Kanthal. They did not/would not confirm, but just said to use the Steam engine TCR/CSV for the Kanthal NiFe 52

Compounding the bad taste is the fact that your twisted 28ga 4mm 10 wrap dual coil needs 250 watts to hit temp & produce good vapor. The only thing 70 watts vaporized was the nasty grease that comes on the wire. Oh and when you twist it before cleaning it, you lock that nasty grease in there.

Look in the results section below. This is a dual parallel 28ga 4mm 10 wrap NiFe 52 .24Ω build like you described. Heat flux shows 70 watts will produce a very cold vape indicated by the Blue color. It doesn't matter what you set the temp to 70 watts just wont get it there. Not with 1.276 square inches of surface area. The same build in 26ga would be stone cold!

Here is same build with 250 watts applied. The heat capacity of 190,258 Orange - Red in color indicates a warm - Hot vape, but remember the results box is not based on Temp limiting control. What that means is, if it shows a warm to hot vape, it equates to heat potential if used in TC. Or in other words a coil build + watt combo resulting in a Red heat flux in the 190,000 - 210,000 range is capable of a warm/Hot TC vape if Temp is set accordingly.

The last thing to note is heat capacity results shown just below the heat flux.
at 139.51 mj/K it is a slow to heat turd unless your pushing 250+ watts.

Try the Ti from Temco.

They sent one of their customers an email which was transcribed here where you can read "(...) our titanium wire starts out as grade 2 (...)"

It was already debunked by Duane that no matter how much you vacuum anneal titanium, you can't remove oxygen from it which is exactly the opposite they state.

Regards
Tony

Sent from my keyboard through my phone or something like that.
Could you point me in the direction of Duane's post where he debunks the SSV wire please? Or any other information regarding SSV Ti

Titanium wire, vaping and safety

There is plenty of discussion about it on the previous and following posts.

There is a confusion though. I think it's sweet spot vapes that is making the claim, not sweet vapes or whatever. There are two stores with very similar names. Make sure which one is the one with the "magic" Ti wire.

I liked the 28 gauge SS 430 that another member sent me a sample of so well that I ordered 200 ft from Unkamen.
Just what I need .....more wire.
I know the feeling. I might be making Christmas ornament hangers out of my extra wire. Now that I have been using SS, my ni200 and kanthal never get touched.

It's good wire, the small spool it comes on sucks.. If the end of the wire slips out of your hand it looks like an open faced reel gone horrible wrong.

Unkamen should have used a larger diameter spool.

The Ti that I anneal is done so in a relatively oxygen free environment. While the flame I'm using is very small I doubt if there's much oxygen within it. (almost magic)
The Temco Ti is the best annealed Ti I have used. Very soft.

While TEMCo Ti is great, don't be so fast to discount Rio Grande Ti ;) ...

Where did you pick up the temco ti? I've only tried unkamen so far and I've been pretty happy with it but I would like to find some of it a bit cheaper I would order from Rio Grande but they only sell in 24g.
