Apparently the message filtered to QSMB since the person selling the NicFit site no longer has the link in their signature.

I didn't even know what QSMB (QuitSmokingMessageBoars (sic)) was until Sunday. I thought it was interesting since they had an E cig section. I opened up one thread and started reading and the first negative comment started chastising the gal because she had ruined "the quit" because she was using an E Cig. That hit me poorly so I registered and made a comment which was waiting moderation. After that I kept reading and was hit with the horror.

I felt like I walked into a Muslim Mosque only to find it was the headquarters of Al-Qaeda. God bless Thad, he was in there explaining how you could use the E Cig to totally quit nicotine if that was your goal and the terrorists wouldn't accept anything but their way. Talk about a fundamentalist movement!

I went back out to the top of the E Cig thread and the admin explained the situation. They don't like "our kind", even if they had to admit that if you use an E Cig or smokeless you have quit smoking, but haven't accomplished "the quit". After two pages of posts it became clear that it wasn't a place I was interested in.

I posted my second message, also moderated, telling the moderator to disregard my initial post and told him to feel free to cancel my registration. I also suggested they might want to change the name of the message board since it was misleading. I DIDN'T suggest the change it to ANTZMB, but I would have liked to.

I sent off letters to the two doctors who spoke, including three pages of research references.

Here's Dr. Green's version:

Dear Dr. Green:

You were quoted in Katie LaGrone’s news story, “Electronic cigarette, what’s really in it?”

Green says with no real data on e-cigarettes, the three year old tobacco alternative may actually be more harmful than traditional cigarettes.

"The doses of nicotine that you get could, conceivably, be higher than what you would get in a typical cigarette," he said.

Actually, there is a growing body of evidence indicating that electronic cigarettes are very effective in helping those who struggled for decades to quit smoking and kept relapsing. None of this evidence shows that e-cigarettes are harmful. A comparison of the ingredients in smoke with the ingredients in vapor makes it obvious that smoking is certainly more hazardous.

View attachment 50651

Dr. Laugesen of Health New Zealand has found that vapor contains only 1/3 to 1/10 of the nicotine contained in a puff of smoke, and that the level of “carcinogens” is equivalent to what’s in an FDA-approved nicotine patch and orders of magnitude lower than the carcinogens in cigarette smoke.

On the following pages you will find a list of research that has been conducted on electronic cigarettes, classified into clinical research, population surveys, and toxicology testing. I hope you enjoy reading these resources, and I trust that you have the best interests of your patients at heart.

The version for Dr. Feinstein (The Lung Assocation guy) is tailored to his comments.

Dear Dr. Feinstein:

You were quoted in Katie LaGrone’s news story, “Electronic cigarette, what’s really in it?”

"We don't know what's in it. People are inhaling some vaporized compound into their lungs without really knowing what's in it," said Dr. Mike Feinstein with the American Lung Association in West Palm Beach.
Actually, we do know what’s in it: Propylene glycol, water, flavoring, and (optional) nicotine. We know much less about the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke. There is a growing body of evidence indicating that electronic cigarettes are very effective in helping people who struggled for decades to quit smoking and kept relapsing. Researchers are finding no increase in heart rate or blood pressure. Consumers are reporting measurable improvements in lung function. Isn’t that something the American Lung Association wants? If not, why not?

A comparison of the ingredients in smoke with the ingredients in vapor is very indicative of which alternative is more likely to be harmful.

I sent the reporter a copy of both letters (but only one list of the research citations).

This PDF document summarizes the research findings to date on Electronic Cigarettes and provides a list of references, with links to full reports, where available, or to the article abstracts where the journal charges pay-per-view of its articles.
