Ok so listen up people.....I tried keep on dipping my soldering iron into a little pot of my 'salty' mix of e-juce to see how the black crud would build up on the side of the iron....and as I hoped it built up a crusty light 'grey' crud instead of black....which easily rinsed off under the tap....but now here is the weird thing....I can't seem to make any 'black' crud build up on the side of my soldering iron any more if I use normal e-juice!!! ....I don't understand why at all..WTF! ...has the salt left some sort of coating on my iron that the stuff will not stick to or what! ....I can't see what's happening to the coils on my penstyle....perhaps someone with a visible coil could try out a slightly salty mix of e-juice.

Possibly the tip is too hot, I had that problem with an ordinary soldering iron,
the juice just fumed away without apparently leaving anything behind.

Something like a hot plate splashed with water, you get little dancing spheres
of water suspended on their own steam cushion ?

The soldering iron is my normal method for quickly making a bit of black gunk to experiment with.......and it won't work anymore!!.....I shall have to play around some more........on with my white coat.....lol.

My wife had two Pilot atomizers that were cold. She uses PureSmoker Menthol juice exclusively. On one the coil was coated with thick black (she had been dripping on the coild with this one), the other was strangely black for only half the coil's length.

Soaked them in cola for an hour, no apparent effect...

Soaked them in cola for around 12 hours, no apparent effect...

Soaked them in straight NuCalgon 75% for around 16 hours, no apparent effect...

Both are still cold and look the same to me.

rsngfrce--where the atomizers used with PG or VG and also try soaking it for up to 36 hours in the NuCalgon if you still have it--as 16 hours will not do it in many cases--it appears that Vg is easier to clean of then PG--also, which NuCalgon did you experiment with---Thanks--Sun

They were used with PG and I used the same NuCalgon you have pictured in the first post. After the soak I put them in a little bottle of water and shook them around, which resulted in some small specks of black in the water, but I'm not sure this wasn't a bit of black paint coming off the atomizers, as the shaking seemed to rough up the paint a bit (atomizers knocking into each other).

I will try a longer soak and see if what happens...

rsngfrce--my new experiments that I will be posting soon clearly show that PG is harder to remove then VG--so let them soak for at least another 24 hours and do let us know--Thanks--Sun

rsngfrce - when you say 'cold' you mean dead, or just not working well ?

Often after a clean the coil looks much the same but the deposit is weakened enough to come off when start to vape on them again (one can look again after 1/2 hour of use).

When I say cold, I mean when you blow on the battery LED with the cart off, the atomizer does not heat up at all (which it normally does with the M401).

My wife has also had atomizers that she though were dead because they weren't producing any vapor, but I showed her that was because they had lost their prime after she cleaned them. I always wonder if this is the case when people say their atomizer is dead. These two do seem to be cold/dead though...

Right now I've got my bad-tasting M401 atomizer in the Nu-Calgon because NOTHING else (running under hot water, boiling, cola, heated atomizer into cold water) has helped get rid of the burnt taste. Once I'm done with that, I'll put the two dead ones in again.

I live in the Cleveland, OH area and Johnstone Supply carries the 8oz ($7.93) and 4 liter ($65.83) bottles. I'm picking some up tonight and plan on experimenting on two 901 atomizers. I'm going to stand them battery end down and put some kind of sleeve over that end to block the hole, then just fill the atomizer until the wick is submerged. Plan on leaving overnight for 12-15 hours then tomorrow morning will do an all day soak in distilled water, then rinse for a good 5 minutes.

put "some kind of sleeve over that end to block the hole"

If you think of a good way to do that, let us know - would be very useful for using less cleaner and avoiding the paint.

Maybe..(just thinkin' out loud) a wax earplug, squished out thin so just the very tip of the metal case goes in it. (don't forget to plug the vent hole) The cleaner wouldn't degrade the wax, I don't think, and if squished onto a piece of foil, would hold the atomizer upright all night even if it were gently accidentally bumped.

What do you think? ~ dee

Princess - really no idea as never seen those, worth a try, with water first. I have spongy things. Maybe they'd work too ...

Thought of plastercine but i'm sure it would leak.

Cart caps sometimes have a tight fit if placed over the PV tube or could be made tighter with, er ,,,

Steampunk - good luck and await your results :)

How about making a tinfoil pot or something.

Well - I was hoping to find a tip protector like the attached but I haven't come across one yet. I work in a hospital and I know I'll hit paydirt eventually. As an alternative, I belive 1/4" rubber tubing either tied off or clamped @ the end should work for a 901 atomizer. Either way, I have to think about a way to hold them to keep upright...like a test tube holder or something. Maybe an old toothbrush holder...something like that.
