Ameren isn't a co-op it's a company,the reason I ask is co-op's sell real nice surge protectors with insurance coverage if they fail

Yeah, it's some weird deal out here. The co-op negotiates the pricing, then Ameren supplies the power.
I'll see if I can find that letter again...I think I'm telling you right...not 100% sure though.

Oh, after the crashes. You prob needed one after that mess.

It took the woman I work with almost 2 hours to get from House Springs to Belleville yesterday morning. I wouln't do it. She leaves her house at quarter to 7, and gets to work around 8:30 to 8:45 every day. She sometimes stops at the Fenton store for parts, but even so.
I'd go work at WalMart before I'd fight the traffic she does everyday (twice a day).

We have good protectors on a few things, TV's/audio equip., then in the "office/craft room/vaping supplies" room, I have one, but I don't have one out here in the living room that I could plug into and reach to the couch.
I understand you can get whole house protectors, but I think they're pricey.

Their not as bad as you would think,I use the outlet ones in a few places around here and so far no problems,the good ones come insured if you keep the receipt

Yeah, those people can just go scratch.
If it's construction, and there have been signs letting you know for the last 12 miles that the lane is ending...then sorry, I'm leaving you hang there...until you decompose.
But if it's an accident and traffic just bogs up and has to stop, that's a completely different thing. *Completely different.*
There's a spot in Belleville where two lanes merge to one and you'd think there was some sort of cash reward for being one car ahead...and the people who are in the lane that's ENDING just don't get it that *their lane ends*, not mine , I'm where I'm supposed to be.
If I don't have to, I just don't even go that way.
People just drive like (words we can't say here).
I just really want to move far away from people.

So @Sara Love what's your weekend look like.
I saw you work full time, so I'm sure weekends are time for laundry and such.
I just work 3 days a week.
Occasionally if something strange is going on at work I'll have to do short stints of FT, but mostly I'm just PT, by choice.

Bear in mind, a direct hit by lightning will flow through a surge protector like melted butter. These things are designed for power line issues and are totally unable to prevent damage by lightning.

Ahhhh, that would make sense.
I do know that when your power has been out, that you should unplug your more costly items, and them plug them back in once it comes back on so.
Something about the surge, or possible inconsistent feed when it all goes back on at once.
Also that low power is very dangerous to the life of your appliances/electronics/systems.
DH has said if I ever come home to that situation, just to flip the whole house breaker off.

I remember party lines.
Where we live is fine. It's a small, tiny town.
Our house is too close to the house next to it...as in "out of code" too close. The builder who built both of them didn't really have the proper space to get two homes on the two lots, at least not the size of homes he put up.
They said he set the foundations over the long Thanksgiving holiday (anyway), the village didn't make him take them out.
I guess it was out of code (or whatever they call it), but not sooooooo bad that they were going to raise a stink.
Either way, it was ultimately our choice to buy it or not.
We're on a corner, and across from us is the village park, so it's not a huge deal....unless our neighbors sell and weirdos move in.

The "whole house" protectors are supposed to fry themselves in a lightning strike, which supposedly creates a "break" preventing it from traveling through the rest of the house.

Dunno. While I like the concept, I don't have enough experience with something like that to make an informed decision one way or the other.

But even the fancy "insured", stand alone models are unable to prevent meltdowns in cases like that. I know. Have seen it first hand far too many times.

Now I just unplug stuff. And don't forget your Internet and Cable TV cables and phone lines. Lightning can travel through RG8, Cat 5 and Cat 3 just as easily as a 110v power line.

Good morning Lori. That is my story too, did I mention that already, sorry if I did. I have posted more since May than in the entire two years of being a member.

Little scatterbrained these days. School started. Forms, permission slips, agendas, book orders, fundraisers, additional school supplies all within the first two weeks. My head is spinning and my kitchen counter is covered in paper.
I think I'm the only parent not happy that summer vacation is over. I love summer vacation, it's more relaxed.

Yeah...no. What I was talking about would be like if the grid was having issues and I came home to a low power situation.
I won't go near the panel in an electrical storm.
But good to mention that because not everyone might know that.
We had a limb bounce off a line at our other house once after a storm.
It was from the house to the pole.
When I got there, we had a low power situation.
DH told me to flip the main.
The power guy who showed up to fix the wire said I'd done the right thing.
After he fixed it and the power was back on, he waited until it turned it back on to make sure everything was right.
