AltCig.com is a relatively new juice-only vendor (not to be confused with AltCigs.com, an older vendor now out of business). The central banner on the AltCig home page proclaims: “Premium e-liquid proudly made in the USA by award winning flavorists. Taste the difference. vape happy.”

Though I’m happy with all six juices I bought during AltCig’s Grand Opening sale, I have to admit that I regard their banner copy as nothing more than typical advertising BS. Premium e-liquid? Is that like the FDA designation of super-premium for ice creams with artery-clogging butterfat content? No, it’s just the same hollow appeal to higher quality “upper class” lineage that lots of other juice vendors make. Made in USA is certainly meaningful to many vapers, but I don’t personally find anything inherently better about juices based on country of origin. And finally, award winning flavorists? Awards? From whom? I must have missed the last gala spectacle of the Flavoring Oscars on TV. Hell, I didn’t even know there were awards for flavorists. It’s bad enough that Hollywood sees fit to engage in the annual ritual of self-important posturing with red carpets, tuxedos, designer gowns, and long-winded acceptance speeches, but I suppose it’s inevitable that the vaping industry will succumb to the same narcissistic vanity of awards ceremonies, even if they’re not televised on major network cable and satellite.

If the banner read: “AltCig sells only the very best juices we can make, and we think they’re great!” that would be---to my way of thinking---accurate advertising. On the other hand, phrases such as “premium” and “award winning” are little more than magical invocations of superiority.

Please understand, I have no axe to grind against AltCig. It’s just that they are among many vendors who apparently subscribe to the marketing notion that hype is justified to sell products. I know I’m swimming against the tide here, but that always rubs me the wrong way.

Enough of my ranting about how things are in the real world. What about AltCig RY4?

specs: The 15ml bottle of AltCig RY4 I purchased is a medium-caramel colored transparent liquid made with a 50/50 PG/VG base at 24mg nic strength. This is a custom, made-to-order juice, so I let it steep for two weeks. Tasting was done by loading the juice into a SmokTech 1.7 ohm Resurrector carto vaped from a Hello 016 battery providing 4.0V unloaded (3.5V loaded) for a real power output of 7.4 watts.

AltCig’s description on its RY4 ordering page reads: “Rich caramel, vanilla and tobacco vape with complex undertone notes. An enjoyable, slightly sweet tobacco vape.” How refreshing! A vendor who actually mentions all three core flavor components of RY4s. As for the “complex undertone notes,” I can taste their presence in the enriched flavor profile, but I can’t identify what those extra individual flavors are. I doubt that many RY4 juice makers use only the Big Three. Seems much more likely that they tweak their recipes with other flavorings to produce what they feel is the most pleasing end result. In this case, the tweaking is fairly substantial.

Do I like AltCig RY4? Yes. It’s more custom than classic in flavor profile, but not wildly so. This is not re-inventing the wheel, just an attempt to make it roll better. Please note, however, that to my palate AltCig RY4 is more than just “slightly” sweet. Granted, it’s not candy sweet, but it is nonetheless a strongly caramel juice that leans toward sweet with sufficient richness to nudge it into the Dessert category, where the caramel, vanilla, and additional underlying flavors take precedence over the tobacco. Oh, the tobacco’s there, but the other flavorings set the tone.

Is AltCig RY4 distinctive? To some extent, but not remarkably so. It’s definitely not your typical “generic” RY4, but it’s also not provocative or revolutionary. If this were politics rather than vaping, AltCig RY4 would be liberal or perhaps even progressive, but not radical. The “complex undertone notes” make it different enough to stand out from the herd.

I can easily recommend AltCig RY4. It’s a tasty juice that provides a satisfying vape---even if it’s not “award-winning.” LOL.

specs: The 10ml bottle of EcigExpress My 4 I purchased is a reddish-orange colored transparent liquid. Nic strength is 18mg/ml, but the base blend is unknown. I tested My 4 by dripping into a 1.5 ohm Joye LR306 atty energized by a BuzzPro set to various voltages for a power output of 7-10 watts.

Among most RY4s, the central flavor, as well as the element with the greatest variability, is the caramel. Flavor profiles of caramel vary widely, from the sugary hard candies whose sharper flavor is released by dissolving, through the softness of chewy caramels, all the way to the gooey richness of liquid caramel used as fillings for chocolates or toppings for ice cream. The scale of sweetness is wide also, from potent sugars to almost dairy-like milkiness, with differing subtones from molasses to butterscotch.

When used in the basic RY4 recipe with tobacco and vanilla, questions of how much and how strong arise. Some RY4s downplay the caramel in favor of stronger tobacco, while a smaller number emphasize vanilla. In more than half the RY4s I’ve vaped, however, caramel is the ingredient that stands out immediately, the first and often strongest of the three classic flavor elements. An RY4 can be caramel-rich without being dessert sweet, but of those RY4s that add sweeteners (cotton candy, toasted marshmallow, ethyl maltol, or sucralose), the extra sweetness is usually perceived through the caramel.

And so it is with EcigExpress My 4. This is definitely a caramel-rich, dessert-sweet RY4. The dominating caramel subjugates the vanilla and smothers the tobacco, making it impossible to identify as a variety---Virginia Burley, Latakia, Turkish, or a cigar or pipe blend---who can tell? I can’t. The tobacco becomes generic and vague buried under the caramel.

This fairly common style of RY4 lives and dies according to the perceived qualities of the caramel. If the caramel tastes good, the juice succeeds. If, however, the center-stage caramel tastes odd or imparts flavor undertones that are less than delicious, the juice fails. That’s not an objective measure, of course, so judgment will vary according to the individual vaper’s palate.

To me, My 4’s caramel tastes OK. Not great, but not weird or off-putting, either. Is it among the best RY4s I’ve ever vaped? Not by a long shot. I find My 4 fairly pedestrian and a bit on the simple side---not complex or layered. I also wish it had either more tobacco or a stronger tobacco to challenge and augment the caramel. But that’s just me. If dessert or caramel-rich RY4s are your thing, you’ll probably be pleased with My 4.

RY4 Category Groups: Dessert (sweeter), Caramel Rich

Link: EcigExpress Manager's Special My 4

In an unrelated footnote, I visited PinkSpotVapors’ web site for the umpteenth time yesterday. PinkSpot states with what I presume to be tongue-in-cheek humor that their RY8 is “twice as good as RY4.” I don’t know about that, but at $5.95 for a 6ml sample bottle---just shy of $1.00/ml---it’s twice as expensive. For that price, it had damn well better be twice as good! What is this stuff, liquid gold?

By contrast, My 4 is currently on Manager’s Special at EcigExpress at $1.99 for a 10ml bottle. Of course, many people hold that you get what you pay for, so more expensive juices may justify the extra dinero. In my personal experience, however, I haven’t found any correlation at all between a juice’s price and how good (or bad) it is.

If I were on a personal quest to find a fantastic, world-beating RY4 as an all-day vape, PinkSpot’s RY8 might be worth the hefty price tag (assuming that it’s terrific, which I don’t know). However, I have 75 RY4s and don’t vape any of them on a daily basis, so I passed on ordering a bottle. If someone sends me some PinkSpot RY8, however, I’ll happily review it.

Curiously, the Top 10 on the Big List may not be the best place for you to start, since many of the RY4s at the very top of the rankings are so distinctive that they actually transcend the "classic" flavor profile for RY4.

Yeah, ordering juices can get pricey real fast. For those of us who come to regard vaping as both a hobby and a passion, the sky's the limit with how much one can spend. I've bought or made more than 8 liters of juice over my 15 months of vaping. Add to that more than 20 eGo batts, 40 mod PVs, about 300 atties, cartos, tanks, etc., 150 batteries and chargers, and endless other hardware supplies. Even with most of that being purchased on sale or at the lowest possible prices, the total is well, staggering. Even I am shocked at how much money I've spent. And I'm probably not even in the Top 20 spenders on ECF, though I might be in the Top 100. I was in a position to afford that in 2011, but I'm gonna have to pull back in 2012.

I see that you've already made your decision and ordered a 50ml bottle of Dekang RY4 from Madvapes. Congratulations. That's a good choice.

I hope you ordered your 50ml bottle from Madvapes' China E-Liquids page, presumably in the 24mg version they have in stock, since that page contains juices that come pre-mixed straight from Dekang. On the other hand, if you bought a 50ml bottle from the Custom China E-Liquid page, word is that Madvapes gets those bottles from another supplier, not straight from Dekang, and in the past some ECF posters have felt that those were different from "real" Dekang, and not nearly as good.

Either way, I hope you like it.

Interesting thought. The vast majority of vendors sell only one version of RY4. Numerous vendors offer two RY4s, usually one "standard" and one "custom" version. As far as I know, however, no single "clearinghouse" vendor exists that carries many different RY4s. But then, few vapers would want to order five or ten different RY4 formulations at once. Maybe only you and me. LOL.

Heavenly Vaporz has 4 different RY4 just for the record ,I saw them last week when I stopped in.Sherman,Texas storefront location.

Looks like HeavenlyVaporz is selling the same Hangsen (Chinese) RY-series (RY1, RY2, RY3, RY4) that Liberty-Flights and one or two other vendors have sold for quite awhile.

Here's an explanatory section from a post I wrote earlier today in a thread about RY3 on the Juice Discussion forum:

As for the numbered sequencing of RYs (RY1, RY2, RY3, etc.), RY4 was the original and first---the initials RY are an acronym for "Ruyan," which is supposedly the Chinese slang word for "cigarette-like," and 4 because that was the fourth version tried by Ludo (owner of Janty) and the Chinese flavor chemist who created RY4 together in a Chinese juice manufacturing facility one afternoon in 2007.

Later---much later, actually---Hangsen came out with the lower-numbered RYs. People have gotten the idea that the differences between the four (RY1, RY2, RY3, and RY4) are in sweetness (with each higher number being progressively sweeter), but I'm not sure that presumption is accurate. Keemer (another Chinese juice manufacturer) makes both an RY3 and RY4, but I've never seen an RY1 or RY2 from them. At least a couple of U.S. juice vendors sell an RY5 juice (FSUSA) or flavoring concentrate (Totally Wicked).

Dekang now makes a bewildering array of RY-variations specifically for VapourWorldUK: (Ruyan, RY1, RY2, RY3, RY4, RY Hi-5, RY6, RY7, and RY8, plus Intense versions of each).

PinkSpotVapors doesn't sell an RY4, but they do sell a custom-made juice they call RY8, because (according to PinkSpot's rather tongue-in-cheek description) it's "twice as good" as RY4. LOL.

Basically, anything goes in RY4 Land.

Hi Bill,

I am on the RY4 trail, looking for my all day vape, and this thread has been the reference bible for me! Thanks for creating and maintaining it.

I am a relatively a new vaper but have bought more than 50 flavors mostly from Healthcabin. I live in India, so shipping costs are astronomical, hence I order in bulk. Of all the flavors, I only seem to like the RY4s (HC and Dekang) and some other tobacco flavors. Though both the RY4s from HC are good enough, they leave me craving for something that could be a tad more flavorful. I find the RY4 flavor the most muted among all other exotic flavors that HC provides. I have even ordered additional flavoring from HC and adding that improves the flavor, but just as your review says, its one integrated flavor, with no undertones or aftertastes. Fortunately I am picking up all of Latif77's lot of RY4 from the classifieds here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/closed-sold-classified-threads/270722-lot-ry4-juices.html Which he seems to have compiled by referencing this thread. While the lot will serve as a great way to test the various RY4s without actually having to ship them to India independently, most American vendors I have contacted seem to not ship outside the US. So I am worried that I will find a flavor that I like and will not be able to order it :(

Chinese vendors seem to ship all over the world, so what according to you are the top Chinese RY4 vendors that you think I should try (besides HC)? Any recommendations would be helpful.

Thanks again :)

The usual suspects might apply---GreenhouseOne, HeavenGifts, EastMall---but I think you would have more success in finding a richer RY4 from VapourWorldUK, which is in Britain but ships internationally.

VapourWorld E-Liquids

As far as I know, VapourWorldUK is the only source vendor for Dekang's Intense line. I could recommend Dekang RY4 Intense from VW's Standard juices, or RY-Hi5, RY6, RY7, or RY8 in their Intense versions from the Premium juices.

Alternatively, you can now purchase HealthCabin RY4 (their house brand that you already like) in HC's special line of premixes with double flavoring essence. Or, if you DIY, try HealthCabin's RY4 flavoring concentrate, which you could then mix to whatever kicked-up intensity of flavor you like.

Good luck!

I have not tried many RY4s as Bill and I love all his reviews but I have to comment on Kickbass RY4 .To me this juice is great and really different from any RY4 I have tried out there besides Backwoods Brew not saying its taste like BWB its just seems to stand on its own but at times BWB has dawned on me like others. The only strange thing about KBV RY4 it seems to get a burnt taste when the dual coil cartos is not soaked not sure if its the juice burning or the cartos but other juices dont do that so its more than likely its the juice and whats crazy when the burnt taste comes in it almost taste like a real cig.

passerbyeus,

KickBassVapor RY4 has made quite a journey with me. Initially, I didn't like it much because (to my taste buds), the juice was overwhelmed by the signature base flavor that underlies many of KBV's dessert vapes. That base is fine with me in desserts, but I didn't love it in an RY4. As a result, I gave KBV RY4 a fairly low (and, to many people, disappointing) ranking on the first list back in June of last year. It languished in the bottom third of the rankings through many subsequent revisions as the list grew, doubling and then tripling in size.

In January, after reading one of hangdude's posts that extolled the virtues of KBV RY4, I spent an entire day vaping it again. After eight months of aging (steeping) in the bottle, the base flavor had integrated into the "real" flavors, which is a nice way of saying that the base had neutralized or vanished, leaving only the RY4 flavors. I was surprised and pleased. By the end of that day, my opinion had changed dramatically. At the next rankings update, KBV RY4 jumped up 25 positions or something like that, the biggest gain any juice ever made in the rankings.

Note that in the "new" Big List---which ranks only my personal Top 10 favorites---KBV RY4 is #7.

I haven't encountered the "burnt taste" you mention, but I almost wish I had, since I actually like the ashy smokiness of some juices, such as mom&pop RYO and FlavourArt's new Black Fire Tobacco (Black Fire isn't an RY4, but mom&pop did use RYO as the base for their RYO4, which just happens to be one spot above KBV in my personal Top 10 RY4s at #6).

I'm not sure which is more satisfying: An RY4 that knocks my socks off right from the beginning (such as Janty), or an RY4 that initially doesn't impress me but then rises phoenix-like from its own ashes (double-entendre intended) to claim the crown of rightful royal heritage.

Anyway, I agree: KBV RY4 is good stuff.

I have been hearing good things about VapingZone's new flavors. I am just wondering if anyone has given them a try yet.

dude,

I haven't, but I went to their site a couple days back. Appears that the VZ-USA line of juices is made in-house, but you never know. Might be custom recipes outsourced to an American juice manufacturer. Or not.

All the usual juice blends, especially in the tobaccos. The one review of their RY4 says "amazing tobacco flavor with whiskey and caramel notes." Wonder if that means that it's a little like the never-made (yet) Vermillion River Kentucky Premium RY4? Probably not. I fooled around recently with some QuickNic tobaccos (because of their liqueur-like tanginess) in diy blending experiments with other tobacco flavoring, but I couldn't come up with the same kind of tang that's in Kentucky Premium. Maybe it's not spirits at all, but something else my brain can't identify. QNJ tobaccos are good natural extract horses, but VR Kentucky Premium is a Triple Crown winner.

Speaking of experiments, I just whipped up a batch of juice using FlavourArt's new Black Fire Tobacco concentrate. I haven't been a fan of FA's synthetic tobaccos, but this new stuff is pretty good---very smoky. Still not as yummy as some of the best natural extract tobaccos, but definitely the best I've tasted from FA. I think I'll make up a couple of 3ml bottles of RY4s using Black Fire and Kentucky Vanilla as bases.

Meanwhile, maybe someone will pick up a bottle of VapingZone RY4 and tell us what it's like.

Sounds like that Black Fire Tobacco concentrate may make a good Applewood base!

wigglr,

I'll bet you're right about that. I made some ersatz Kentucky Applewood out of Kentucky Premium and some sweet red apple flavoring. I'll have to try the same thing with Black Fire.

Let me know how it goes, Bill. I had two great love affairs. Firstly with BWB's Applewood and then with VR Kentucky Blend Applewood. I loved them so much that I over-vaped them, and now can't touch em :(

I've been looking for one ever since!

Thanks for the recommendation!! I think there are a couple of vendors I need to give a shot! Any others from them you recommend?

Sorry for the digression, all!

Psst, wigglr -- try Darth Vaper's Applebacco (w/ Extra Flavor). YUM YUM YUM!

My usual steeping advice applies.:laugh:
