Get well soon ROB!

After nearly 2 months in the hospital, my Dad died yesterday after being back home for only 2 days. He was 72. Still young in my eyes.

My Dad had a hard life, came to the US from Puerto Rico in the late 40s/early 50s as a young boy of about 10. As a young boy, as a teenager, and as a young man, he faced the discrimination of the period and became a brawler. He even got into a fight with a cop and got locked up for 5 years. He returned home rebellious and angry and started drinking - becoming an angry & violent alcoholic, which he took out on his family.

20 years later or so, he hit the bottom, as most with addictions do, and he found AA. For the past 30 years, he worked on himself, reaching out to all whom he had hurt, making or trying to make amends, and building new relationships wherever possible. He became a meeting leader at AA, and a social worker, specializing in helping those with addictions, and receiving lots of recognition and awards for his work.

The family was split into those who forgave and those who did not. I choose to forgive and I'm glad I did, or I would not have witnessed the the wonderful transformation that he achieved on his life's journey. By the time I got married, I was more than happy to have my Dad walk me down the aisle. My DH, whose own dad passed when he was only 12, said he hadn't called anyone "Dad" since his father passed, but my father became like a "Dad" to him. They got along fabulously and always shared hello and goodbye hugs and kisses on the cheek.

My Dad died of complications of a surgery to remove a blockage from his intestine, which introduced bacteria into his bloodstream, affecting the rest of his body. His blood platelets were so low, he received blood transfusions for almost a month - to no avail. In this weakened state, his already challenged heart, and lungs challenged by the early stages of COPD, (he had smoked most of his life only quitting about 2 years ago but still cheating) couldn't fight anymore. He died at his home with his wife by his side.

He leaves a wife, 4 Daughters, 3 sons, 19 grandchildren, and 12 great grand children.

RIP Dad.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Delilah, and send hugs of comfort to you and your family.

Afternoon REOville

I’m doing some cleanup of my workbench. There must be 3-4 skeleton gaming PCs I’ll be scavenging components to sell on eBay for some side money. Intel CPUs, Nvidia dated monster video cards. I figure for penny on the dollars I can dump them quick. Maybe someone will need a cheap upgrade.

Delilah,

Your message touched me. It sounds like your father was a great man. Anyone that can change like that has courage that few people possess. Your forgivness of his early life makes you stronger and kinder and a much better person as well for when one has forgiveness and compassion they are closer to a realization of what life can be. Thank you for sharing his story.

Delilah,
I too understand the loss of a father. My father and I also had a reconciliation later in life that allowed us to repair a lot of burnt bridges from our past. 25 years of time was not enough and I can't believe it's been 3 since he passed. I can only say it does get better and the good times are what will bubble up in your mind whenever you think of him. My thoughts are with you and your family. Brew

Good evening everyone! :)

While waiting for the radio drama...I figured I would update you. Rob has come through surgery and is in recovery. If everything goes smoothly from here out, he should be home in 5-6 days. I'm sure he'll check in when he's up to it. :)

Oh, and thanks for the reminder. I need to go tune in.
