@ Lisa
Speaking about buying food....hey Lisa, I hear your town at war with Canada!!
Americans Fed Up With Canadians Taking Over Local Costco - ABC News
ya that crap pisses me right off. I can't believe folks are THAT whiney over it. Ya...the Canadians are down here en force...and have been for years. It's what has kept us safe from the recession that is hitting the rest of the country so hard. I'm so ashamed of that attitude. We should all be grateful for the business the Canadians bring to the states, especially the border areas. Seriously...there's another Costco about 30 minutes away with no lines and full shelves. I don't think these whiners have any idea how many millions of dollars the Canadians spend down here....and just how many more folks would be jobless and how many business that would have to shut their doors if the Canadians quit coming down. I just want to slap the person who started it all.

I'm practically vibrating with rage over this.![]()
Lisa you can't let yourself get so worked up over short-sighted people that whine over a longer trip to the store. They are selfish and just see the problems it causes them. There is no reasoning with people like that. If it interferes with their task they complain.
News media jumps on things like this too. It will stir it up even more when people know they might be on the news if they speak out.
Sorry this is happening in your neck of the woods!
SHAME ON YOU!*deep sigh* okay...so the media & facebook page have blown the issue out of proportion. Yes, the Costco gets THAT busy and yes, it is mainly Canadians who shop there. However, this isn't Canada's fault and it's not Costco's fault. In fact, I support Costco's position on the matter which is "anyone with a Costco membership can shop at any store in the world."
The underlying issue is our City....they have decided, rather foolishly I might add, that we need to stop growth, but we still want more people to come here and spend money. Kind of an impossibility if you look at the big picture. Costco needs to expand, but our City won't let them.
This is an old position the city remains intent upon keeping. They've been tightening the restrictions over building size, traffic allowance, etc for decades. We've been losing business here because of it. Stores are uprooting and moving elsewhere to get away from the obnoxious taxes and restrictions. We've got huge box store buildings that are sitting vacant...that were built decades ago. It's all just silly. I know what they want, but the idea is that if you don't keep growing smartly, then things will stagnate and fall apart. We're not Seattle and never will be, but they should take advantage of what the market has to offer. If they don't allow the "city" to grow, then the outlying towns will grow...diminishing the "small town" appeal of our entire county. It's hard to explain. Folks will just skip over our area and shop in the next county over. Oh well...I'm mellow again.Sounds like the city is willing to sacrifice the money spent by the Canadians to try to remain a city with a small town feel. Might just be cutting their own throats to make that choice. Maybe those in charge should step back and look at the rest of this country. How many people can travel and spend like before? How many cities are really hurting because of lack of people spending?
They have a golden opportunity to retain their economic advantage. Looks like they just might blow it.

Okay...*deep sigh*...I'm off my soap box. Just needed to vent.
It is comical to me that where I am moving is kind of a no mans land! Even though it is surrounded by subdivisions and homes it is outside the lines of the city limits. The area has had attempts to incorporate. Right now I can use one of three names for the "city" on my mailing address. I can use one of two zip codes. I have called the building and zoning, city planning, and the checked the post office. I still don't know what to put as address on my drivers license when I get it changed! Or on my registration for my vehicles. I just know I don't pay city taxes!
Karen, I've been meaning to ask you. Since you're moving so much closer to your job does that mean you get to go home at night? Or does your job require you to stay there? Just curious. Hope you get to go home.![]()
I thought it was silly too when I saw it on CNN. Its not like Americans buying well needed medicine from Canada to save a little money. Btw, I didn't mean to put you in a bad mood. I actually wasn't even watching and on the PC when the sound bite mention Bellingham which caught my interest and I thought of you and Wayne.![]()
no worries, my friend. I was already angry about this. I just hadn't thought about it in a few hours. It is comical to me that where I am moving is kind of a no mans land!
