I had just flown back visiting my dad in CT the night before all this. I had one more day of vacation left so when I staggered downstairs that morning at 6am, I couldn't believe my eyes or ears when I turned the TV on to see the local news.
I was getting ready for work, having my coffee and surfing the web when a pal of mine called and said "CNN. NOW." I flipped on the tv and it was about 10 minutes after the first plane had hit. As I watched, the second plane came in.
I was stunned. I called in to work and told them I wouldn't be coming in, and they said they understood. It was an FAA shop, a company that remanufactured gas turbines for commercial aircraft, and they were totally hip to what was going on.
I hunkered down in front of the tv and didn't move for days.

I just got up and grabbed a drink and got on the computer and logged in on a chat site.
I started reading and asked what was going on and someone told me to turn on the TV.

I still remember seeing my first plane in the sky after 9/11. It was almost a week and a half later, and it's amazing how fast you get used to an empty sky. I stared at the plane with my mouth hanging open like a caveman who had just spotted the Enterprise in low orbit.
I had just arrived to work ...2nd day at my new job and and saw all the pale tear stained faces on my coworkers. We didn't have a TV, but we had the radio on. That was the quietest day at work...lots of panicked and heart broken faces. Contractors walking in the door to pick up their materials for the day with tears streaming down their faces. We kept on working, there were jobs to be done and nothing was going to stop that. And in retrospect, we needed it....the distraction. The following year, I took vacation that week and flew down to SanFransisco to visit a friend. We spent that day in front of the TV, mourning on the first anniversary.
I was working from home that year, got up to do my usual coffee and start up the PC turned on the news and it was on every channel.
Saw the 2nd plane hit and new that this was not going to be good.
Did not get much work done that week. In the weeks to follow the most disturbing thing was no plains in the air.
We have an air port in town and it was quiet.

You remember...it wasn't too long after that that you and I met...probably about 6 months or so, right?
It was strange hearing regular planes once they started flying again. I'm only 4 miles from the Oakland Airport and the San Francisco Airport is just across the Bay form the Oakland Airport.
I know when I heard about the first plane hitting, my first thoughts were a terrible accident. When I heard a 2nd plane was heading into it also, I knew something was up. And then the report about a plane headed towards the Pentagon I knew it for sure.
The only planes we heard were military planes, We live on the CA border and have a Navel Air Base just South West of us.
It was spooky to see them fly the coast and border in the day light. They were out in force.
It did make me feel a bit safer but was uncertain of what was going to happen in the days to come.
Another strange thing I remember. I drove to town latter that day to do something and it was unusually quiet, not much traffic the mall was almost empty. Made for a uneasy feeling that I could not shake.

i will never forget i was at the rifle range at ft. bragg north carolina with some buddies and the pa system told all to report to thier units and we were on alert. base was on lockdown for weeks with constant patrols and guards everywhere.
