The only planes we heard were military planes, We live on the CA border and have a Navel Air Base just South West of us.

It was spooky to see them fly the coast and border in the day light. They were out in force.

It did make me feel a bit safer but was uncertain of what was going to happen in the days to come.

Another strange thing I remember. I drove to town latter that day to do something and it was unusually quiet, not much traffic the mall was almost empty. Made for a uneasy feeling that I could not shake.

Although I was mesmerized by the television coverage for days as was everyone else the one image that is imprinted on my mind, and had the most impact on me seems trite and insignificant to most others.

1, 2, or 3 days after the attack the TV networks broadcast a photograph taken from inside Air Force One showing a F-16 flying just off the port wing.

When I first saw that photograph I was absolutely stunned. In over 3 years of flying on Air Force One it was always a tremendous point of pride that we never traveled with any type of visible escorts. Seeing that fighter flying cover brought home the reality that something really, really bad was happening and what we had once considered normalcy was probably gone forever.

Near Dallas Texas
DH was in Toronto, at a conference, in hotel room bathroom getting ready to go to airport to come home to Texas. He had Good Morning American on and heard sudden increase of activity and energy level on TV. He called me immediately and woke me up to turn on TV. I was sleeping in his recliner which I used to always do when he was away. It was a comfort being in his chair and hearing his voice. Of course his flight back was delayed for days.

Very pricey hotel reduced rates and room service prices for people stuck there for days. DH got tired of very good room service food so started ordering peanut butter and jelly from children's menu. (All this time I thought he went out and bought the makings for but he just told me he ordered from room service.)

We were on the phone a lot during the days we were apart. It helped us both to have voice companionship.

We're not very close to any major airports but there was a noticeable absence of private planes and helicopters going in and out of the small airport about 5 miles from us.

For me it was the plane crashes themselves...the images of burning wreckage held me fast. I had experienced the loss of many a little over 10 years before in another plane crash (most of them were kids and classmates of mine.) Seeing those images immediately transported me back to a time where we as a community were so lost and information was trickling in...and the devastation was just "over that ridge" so to speak. Those feelings came back and I was instantly mourning, not so much for the ones who had died, but more for those who lived on and the feelings that they were going to experience for years to come both privately and as a community. There's no description for it...other than to say I would have gladly given my life to spare even one person from living that grief. The abject horror for me was the staggering number of people who were right then experiencing what is an unfathomable amount of life changing distress.

I was working from home that year, got up to do my usual coffee and start up the PC turned on the news and it was on every channel.

Saw the 2nd plane hit and new that this was not going to be good.

Did not get much work done that week. In the weeks to follow the most disturbing thing was no plains in the air.

We have an air port in town and it was quiet.

Strange the things you remember.

Son and I would go out to the pool at night. We did that a lot and normally we'd see all sorts of planes because there is two airports withing 40 miles of us.
It was eery that we didn't see a one.

The one on the left is Jasmine. She's got her own laundry basket she sleeps in, but that day I guess she felt like hanging out with Zoomie.

Good Day ReoKin,

Back then, I worked a mile away from the Twin Towers and will never forget the throngs of people making their way AWAY from that site, while my husband came from the opposite direction to get me  All goodness bless the fallen and the survivors.

Have a blessed day everyone.

I was doing a run up through one of our National parks radio reception was terrible so I used to listen to tapes. Kept hearing the odd comment on the 2 way just bits and pieces to far away from anyone to actually have a conversation I was actualy rather confused. It wasnt until about 4pm when I spoke to one of the Park Wardens and filled me in on what had taken place then the comments started to make sense.
