Legs, I use Sophos Free on both my iMac and MBP. It uses hardly any resources.

Mac Antivirus | Free Antivirus for Mac Tool Download | Sophos

I thought I told you that before?

But I thought someone said "Macs don't get viruses.":p I have two G4 Macs, btw. Gave a wonderful aqua Special Edition Clamshell away to friend. Wish I had it. HD went south on Powerbook and there are about 100 screws you have to take out to get to HD. Picked up the Ibook on eBay; no OS. Purchased family edition of latest OSX that could be installed on it and it runs slow as a dog. Can't downgrade without purchasing another lower version of OSX. I forget what virus protection I used on it as it's been so long since I touch them. Maybe some day.

I do have that HD mirrored but putting in new HD, which I've had for it forever, is such a hassle. Could run it off of external drive but too much hassle and Win notebooks are more recent and much more powerful.

Hey redhatpat. I know it doesn't take 8 hours to recharge bats but I always thought that on the first charge you should leave it on 8 hours.

That's generally done for NiMH and maybe NiCad packs (not sure about single cells) but haven't heard to do that with Lithium. But don't quote me on that please. I just got a super LI battery for my Galaxy Note 2. It's 9xxx mAH and doubles the weight of the phone. So big it won't fit in case so it comes attached to it's own back for phone. Anyway, instructions said to charge it up all the way and then run it down to 3%, and repeat twice. It took it several days of use to run it down that far. First time I've done that with a LI battery/cell.

At least the Win 8.1 update will give us the start button back like we're used to

Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk

Thanks. I need to check that out. I'm not even sure if it has 8.1. If so button is hidden under the simulated "classic desktop". Tonight I did run into something that says it won't work on 8.1. Can't even remember what it was. I used to be able to sit at computer for 24 hours and remember everything I did. Don't even retain if for an hour now.

Macs are not as prone as Windows for viri/malware but they can get them. So I choose to use Sophos for my virus protection to be on the safe side - better to be safe than sorry.

Add some more ram to the iBook if you can. The newer OSXs' seem to like more ram. I still have Leopard on my MBP with only 2gb of ram and it runs pretty well. When I got my iMac with Lion it came with 4gb ram and I thought I was set. It ran way slower than my old XP Dell Dimension with only 1gb ram. I bought 2 4gb ram sticks for it so now I have 12gb ram in it and it runs good now.

Both my iMac and MBP are refurbished as well. I've had my MBP since 2008 and it has run just about 24/7 for FAH (Computer Distributing for cancer research) with no problems at home. I've had my iMac since 5/12 and it also runs 24/7 doing FAH as well.

yahoo email prolly has this now as well, but on gmail i use the feature where you register your cellphone # to the account. any time a device with an unknown mac addy tries to login it sends a code to your cell which needs to be entered before you can log in. at the very least i know if my gmail gets hacked it's because i did something incredibly dumb on my own computer.

you are also dead-on about most refurbs being returned for silly reasons. a lot of companies have flexible return policies, and then the customer service department gets lazy about returning them back to the manufacturer. aeons ago, i bought several thousand hard disks from a company like that. most of them had been returned because of silly reasons and were perfectly fine. i made a small fortune. i may have bought maybe one new computer since. just refurbs for me.

i wish i had the same luck buying cars, but since i suck at that, i just buy new...

Thanks. Another thing to check out. He hates gmail with a passion but he's still getting his medical groups emails sent to gmail. I do get tired of his cussing it. Yahoo is connected, symbiotically, to our paid ATT provider. And I pay a little extra for unlimited email capacity, something like $20 a year. He did tell me that some of the fake emails said he had run out of storage for his Yahoo mail and if he didn't respond in two days they would cancel his account. And he failed to tell me about it soon enough. That's why he clicked on the link. He's pretty good about not clicking unknown links. I did find one of those emails in his trash and I clicked on the link and Norton caught it with warning about phishing site instead of directing to it.

As hated as Norton is we haven't had any major attacks using Norton, for years. The computers I have it installed on are powerful enough to not get all that bogged down by it. I do like that I can set it up for him so that he doesn't have to do any remembering or actions and most maintenance functions run when computer is idle. But I don't think it's the best program for most peeps unless they capable of tweaking settings.

I've long since stopped staying on razors edge. And neither of us do any gaming. Save loads of money being just a couple of years behind when purchasing new hardware or systems. I think I set this computer, DH's up in 09 and it's perfectly fine for most things even pushing it with multimedia and loads of MS Office projects going and he frequently has 15-20 IE windows and tabs going, too, while we are streaming HD. Our biggest bottleneck is our old copper lines, underground from road, and being a few yards beyond the ADSL distance limit at road. My dual IDSN lines were faster than our DSL is sometimes. But it's better than dialup. Because of our copper lines we only get about 1/20th the speed they can deliver at road. And on busy nights we do get some slowdown. We don't have cable out here.

The G4s have powerpc processors so the highest OSX they will run is 10.5.8. They have max memory. Powerbook ran 10.3 pretty speedy. No complaints. I had no idea 10.5.8 would run so slowly on newer, a bit faster processing, if I am remembering right, G4 iBook. But there are thousands of discussions about 10.5.8 major bogging them down. I've done every tweak that I could find for a year and get group discussion mails about. Only real solution is to drop down to 10.3. I hate to spend any money so may let it go... maybe. I'm mainly hanging onto them for sentimental reasons. I think I got Powerbook, new, in 2004. It was major expensive. iBook from ebay was a couple hundred a few years ago. I added the extra memory. The new tablets have really pushed many of us into using tablets a lot more. Love how compact and light they are even those with 10" screens.

The first thing I do, when I get a new computer, is to disable any and all remote connect software and services.

That solves the problem pretty nicely. ;)

I will say that MS Security Essentials works very well, and I have not had an infected system since the day it was installed.....and it's free. Independent testers in Germany, as well as PC publications ran it thru the mill and it came out with pretty durn good scores in the 98th percentile for detections as well as rootkit deletions.

I know people like to bash MS, but they do get quite a lot of things right....just like the USPS. :)

The first thing I do with a new computer (new or refurb) is to totally reformat it. With the exception of the one computer that I use for work, I load Linux on it. My work computer is required to run Winblows. Microsloth still uses the "Planned Obsolescence" model with their software, which Bill learned (quite well) from Henry Ford. That is the only OS that exists that requires that you dump and reload your software every 6 months to keep it running optimally.

I have that, also! And the first thing I did was run it!Didn't speed it up an iota, though....:(

This damn thing moves as slow as me....

No offense meant toward Norton fans but I would bet that is your problem. I've seen that do some goofy things to machines before and once it was removed and replaced with another program the oddities went away.:2c:

Like Racehorse said MS Security Essentials is free and I normally use AVG Free. I've never had a virus using it, although I'm a little more careful on the web than most.

I believe Norton itself is a virus, that's how many problems it has caused me...:)

Yes, I have read that about Norton. Back in the day, I ran Dr. Solomon. Then it was bought out (I believe by Norton) and it became as bad as all the rest.

That
s funny...it totally shut down after I got rid of Norton!Couldn't get back online! Actually, I couldn't even log in, it kept telling me my password was wrong...and so was my mother's maiden name as a hint!!!

I think this thing is filled up with the previous users stuff:blink:

Good evening!

Since you guys have been offering computer advice, I'll ask a question. Seems one of my Facebook friends clicked on the wrong bunch of stupid and got me (and others) on some horrific spam list. All at once I'm getting 50 to 75 per day. I don't need male enhancement, payday loans, cheap life insurance, etc. and I'm damn sure I didn't win any lottery because I'm way too cheap to play. Any easy way out of this mess without changing my email address?

For some reason, I believe that our President, in his first campaign, promised to clean out spam from the Internet. That has not been done. The new law that they enacted is also ignored (the same as the DNC program), and it totally not enforced. I have only heard of one person that was even charged under the new Spam law. Microsloth is trying to implement some additional features for email, but of course, they are non standard software, and they refuse to comply with the standards. So, spam is as bad, if not worse than it ever was.

I just took a few moments to see how to get rid of Norton Ive spent hours before trying and it was a SYMANTEC THING DUH  WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE ITS MAD oops hit caps lock :D

good afternoon everyone so anyone know a good free antivirus for Mac ? Norton was a dog I used to use AVG free on PCS with good luck

I believe that they have found the first MAC virus in the wild recently. Neither MAC and Linux have viruses. They are as susceptible to Trojans and malware though. You do not need to install software for protection from Trojans and Malware. You simply need to educate yourself and use common sense while surfing and emailing.

that is probably my biggest regret not being able to ride any more

That is why I ride a spyder. At the owners group gathering, I see several multi-amputees that ride them. I believe that the company (BRP) actually has a program for getting disabled riders on the road again.

I do love Chrome. I can't get DH used to it but I keep it on his computer for when I use it. There are still a few sites that don't like Chrome. PhotoBucket loses some functionality with Chrome so I have to use IE for it. I have Chrome on my Galaxy Tab 2. So far it's not much better than native browser. Haven't put it on my phone yet.

The only thing I do not like with Chrome is that it does not like utube. Many of the videos here on the board cannot be opened with Chrome. So, I run firefox as well, for looking at videos. (It has to do with the codecs and copyright protection, which Chrome does not like to bypass.)

Macs are not as prone as Windows for viri/malware but they can get them. So I choose to use Sophos for my virus protection to be on the safe side - better to be safe than sorry.

Again, not viruses. Just trojans and malware.
i realized that 4 months ago today, i received my first ever Reo in the mail

i believe i've already lost count and am expecting 2 great vapemail days next week...

what the hell have you people done to me???

:)

Enabled the inner stalker to come out and take control?

Sorry for the long post. Ya'll were busy last night. *g*

Good Morning REOpeeps!

I hope you are all having a safe and happy weekend. Healing thoughts to those in need, and continued prayers for AZZ who I am hoping is getting over the pain of the recent surgery and learning to get around safely when needed and resting well.

Hello to any new REOnauts!

I am going to try to get some more rest before the drive to Long Beach for Vapetoberfest. I am sure it won't be as fun as Vapefest, because Pietro won't be there ;)

Good morning,

Thank you for the avatar love and welcomes!
Tired this morning, went to watch my son's band play last night.. The bar owner is vape friendly so my wife and I were vaping away. Several people wanted to touch and hold my Reo Grand (drunk people are so uninhibited) ... One woman said, that looks like a walkie talkie.. heh.
Looking at houses today, and then my youngest has a football game tonight.

If I may offer a small piece of computer advice, (I am a certified systems administrator, so this is right up my alley)

I use a few programs on my own personal computer to maintain a safe manageable level of integrity without bogging down my system.

1. Microsoft Security Essentials
2. Malwarebytes Anti Malware, this program is free, there is also a paid version, for 24.95 you get real time protection. (I paid for this myself, and I do not regret it)
3. WinPatrol (this is a free program, there is also a paid version) that helps novices and pros alike better understand what is running at any given time on their systems, it also informs you of a pending change that you have the ability to allow or disallow. I refer to it almost every day.
4. Revo uninstaller - this is a free much more intuitive uninstaller then the default windows uninstaller.
5. CCleaner- Free also, this used to be called Crap Cleaner but the crap was dropped. It does just that, with the click of a button once a day you can clear all temp files on your computer. Temp areas are a harbinger for malicious code and executable files.

Second cup of coffee incoming..........
