I had the same progression except I got a Phidias before I ordered the REO Grand (black/black by the way)

When I first started to vape a month ago, I never thought I would be interested in a box mod. I was looking for a cigarette replacement and a box didn't fit the bill. However after just a short time, the box started to make sense and after I received my Phidias I TOTALLY got it. No more fooling around with carts/cartos foam filler and general mess. Now all I do is just make sure I have juice in the bottle and a charged battery and I'm good for 2 days. Going to a self juicing box mod was the best thing I could have done. Plus another benefit is that a box does not remind me of a cigarette which I feel is a good thing since I dont smoke anymore. Overall I feel it's a better experience and if I had known when I first started, I would have certainly started with a good box mod. It's just simple.

Excellent post, dude...congrats on quitting the cigs!! You really expressed the reason for a box mod just the way I felt it. Thanks!

Frankly I'm a total noob. My dad recently bought greensmoke (yes I know he got ripped). I borrowed one of his batteries and vaped a pre-filled cartomizer. That's the sum of my experience. That being said, I think something like a Reo Mini is far more appealing than an eGo style pv. The idea of dripping and/or refilling carts ontop of having to clean and/or replace attys on a regular basis is unappealing compared to a feeder. The only thing stopping me from getting a Reo Mini is that I think it would be awkward smoking it in public--but no more awkward than an eGo style pv (so I don't care that it accepts pre-filled carts as well).

I will most likely end up buying a kr808 style pv for the time being and may pick up a Reo Mini later. With all this "mods are not for noobs" talk all over the noob forum, I pretty much just skipped over anything I saw about mods. I had no idea there was such a thing as a feeder mod.

So thank you for this thread. I'm happy to consider all options and decide for myself. I now know to skip an eGo style pv if I decide I need an upgrade.

Personally I hate that talk. Sure mods are not for some noobs, and they are not for some non-noobs, but to make blanket statements about who can and cannot figure out a box mod is ridiculous.

I went from my first KR8 to a Phidias bottom feed box in less than 40 days, 40 days of frustrations dealing with constantly charging batteries, replacing dead batteries, and refilling cartos. Got the mod and haven't even used my KR8 since except as a demo; and learned I like vaping more than messing with a PV. I don't believe the learning curve is any worse than with a two or three piece unit, or that the physical similarities of a cigarette style PV is going to make it easier to switch. The convenience of pulling my mod out, taking a few drags, and putting it back in my pocket is what I like. Add to that I have to refill and change batteries on average once a day, and it works perfectly.

With the mods you can get as technical as you wish, going to 6V, or LR on 3.7V, or other types of atomizers. It doesn't mean you have to, I have pretty much stuck with 3.7V batts and Joye 510 atomizers and I like it.

My only caution would be to make sure you like vaping in general (using a less expensive setup) before you jump in and buy an expensive mod. Some people try vaping and don't like it, it would be bad if they were stuck with an expensive mod they didn't like. Of course they sell in the classified here close to the list price.

Regards,
Jag

Despite your hatred of blanket statements, I think it's safe to say that as a general rule, new vapers start on a 1st gen device (std 510, 901, KR808) and quickly look for a 2nd (big battery mod) or 3rd gen (self juicing) within a few weeks or a couple of months. I've come to think of it as a rite of passage.

That said, I've started a couple of newbs on some metal Reos (ie, mini and grand), and they're doing great at it...provided they're using VG juice.

If I had the choice to start with a juice box device than I would have. The 510s got tired early, which cause me to cheat, and the big battery mods made me cheat as well. This was usually when I was driving or walking about, because I didn't like to drip and drive/walk. With a juice box I really had no excuses to cheat because it delivered consistently without dripping and whatever I was doing :)

Right On GoldVaper, I believe that is the typical progression.

I started with a 3 piece Ego clone and within 2 weeks I knew there had to be something better.
Because I was spending more time researching, fiddling with it, and trying to get it to work properly than I was using it. Not to mention the low battery life and mess. I know now that if I could have just started out with a REO, I would have saved hundreds of dollars and a lot of wasted time and frustration. But as they say, hindsight is 20/20.

P.S.
I just donated my Ego clone to a homeless shelter.
So if anyone sees a panhandler in Cleveland puffing on a PV while axin' for money, you can thank me for that.

Thanks so much for this post!

That's nice and welcome to you, greymattergirl. I hope that all vapers stay encouraged to use this healthy alternative...there are so many choices and so many alternatives to the cigarette now....choice and options are fantastic.

Now, as we boldly enter in the age and era of the intelligent or "smart" Personal Vaporizers(simply put-vaporizers with logic circuits that monitor the Atty Resistances and voltages along with self-pumping juicers), there is even more choices in new pioneering products like the oncoming Eclipse eq, the provari, the Darwin, and many more now and in the near future, the choices will become staggering but most welcomed. Some will be pricier than others, some will have more or less features but all will have the same goal in mind....to help us quit the unhealthiest habit in the world or, for that matter, history.

Good luck to all those new to vaping and...

...Vape On!!

Many are walking or have walked or will walk the path that you are on.

You are not alone.

I think you'll find it won't be long that you'll care more about how a device performs than how it looks in public.I personally like to mess with people heads, let 'em stare and get the REO.You won't regret it.
The only thing I've got that is close to a real cig in size is a 1000mah red Inferno,eGo type device.I love it when people look at me puffin away, let it stare. If you're happy, that's what matters!

It appears that there are some Reo Grands left over from last night's sale. I don't speak for Redeyedancer, but you still may be able to email him at reo@reosmods.com and get your hands on a Grand.

Wow...thanks clyde...Rob is doing a heckuva good job filling the demand....

Great post, Alky. =) I agree here. I think that purposefully ignoring box mods for noobs is kind of counterproductive for *some* people. Pretty much no one can say that mall cigs and that type of thing are a good deal, so one is kind of encouraging people to waste their money in the same way we did when we started out. I'd rather give someone all the info that I can and let them avoid that kind of money layout, personally.

Exactly, why encourage people to spend a bunch of money on a rite of passage? At least with a good quality mod if it turns out to be not their cup of tea, they should be able to recoup most of their $$.You see people selling Grands and such at cost all the time.I'd rather not see people waste the kind of money I did !

That is how I feel. I was in for over $200.00 "rite of passage" before I got my Phidias, now all that stuff is collecting dust in a drawer only pulled out for demonstrations. That amount only includes cost of equipment, I separated out the cost of juice.

To think I could have gotten a $40.00 starter kit "rite of passage" before moving to a mod instead of spending all that money not even aware there were better solutions out there.

Oh well, live and learn, and then try to pass on what we learn.
