So I had to go to the airport to pick up a couple of friends of mine. So my buddy was sitting next to me and he lights up a cigarette. The stink was horrible. I didn't say anything but it's been a long time since I've been in an enclosed space with a cigarette. I wonder how come I never smelt it like that before.? I've been vaping for I don't know really close to a year or about a year. Would you have told him to put it out or would you have done like me and said nothing ? just curious what you would have done? Wouldn't it make me a hypocrite to tell him to put it out? Me and this guy used to sit around and smoke a lot of cigarettes together so I didn't say anything. What's the proper etiquette?

I had always heard that the only people more rabidly anti-smoke than non-smokers, are ex-smokers. :) Think that is why? I am only about 3 months without, and they still smell damn good, yet. Was this in a car? (airports being non-smoking throughout US now...)

I guess proper etiquette depends on your personality...

When I married my husband we both smoked, and did so in our home. When I made the switch to vaping I wasn't going to ask my husband to change his life because I made a change in mine, so i simply quit around his smoking.

As a result, the smell of smoke doesn't bother me, even now that I'm no longer vaping so i dont ask anyone to stop smoking around me. It just doesn't matter to me, although I can smell it now..

I have noticed many vapers seem to turn into anti-smokers and can't handle others smokimg around them - although that might be because they didn't quit around it..

Either way, you do what you feel you need to do. If you can't handle the smell or it tempts you to smoke again, then ask your freinds to refrain in enclosed spaces with you..

But if you can deal, then I would because you don't want to treat people as if they are pariahs... remember you were one once too and didn't like being treated like that..

I have good friends who wanted to let me smoke in their home, when the weather was in the teens/single digits, but as noone there smokes, and I have seen in my own house the results of 2 chain smokers puffing away, I just declined, and went outside. It helps cut down on the total number smoked!
As someone who felt increasingly 'squeezed out' by anti smoking restrictions, I try to live and let live.

It was in my truck. There are some airports that have smoking section just seats in a big glass box and it goes up to the sky it's crazy. I've seen that in a airport but I can't remember which one. I believe it's Orlando but I'm not sure.

I thought Denver was the last holdout, and you gotta buy drinks to sit in there. (Been a long while now, since my flying days.)
Anyhow, if it was your vehicle, you get the final word. If you don't want smoking in your truck, you can sure say no! I once bought a factory new pickup, the first new vehicle I ever owned, and I wanted to keep it nice. So I deemed it a non-smoking area!:) Well, that lasted only a short while, as GF and I both were heavy smokers, and she began to get a little ...... that we had to take her car always, and puffing away in it, while I kept mine nice!:D

When I quit smoking, I stopped allowing anyone (even my wife) to smoke in my car. I wanted the smell gone. So if it were me, I would have simply asked (before he lit up) if he could wait as I am trying to get the smoke smell out of my vehicle.

If you know in advance there is going to be a smoker in your car, it might help if you have a spare vape they can try instead. Who knows, you might even convert them.

I think it is like a slippery slope. As I started, nobody said otherwise. After all, I was a new source for their "bumming".

I don't remember anyone telling me about the social side effects.

I can smell a smoker pretty quickly. I don't berate, but I do talk a lot about how vaping.

For ME. Vaping etiquette is same as for smoking..... except I'm not as concerned about the second hand vapor.... in other words I don't vape when or where or with/around those people or places or time I didn't smoke. PERIOD. ......

As a smoker I would be very likely to punch you in the nose for blowing smoke in my face..... vapor looks like smoke...I will react the same.....

Too the WORLD vaping is smoking...the electronic part doesn't compute... the fact that no smoke or actual tobacco is envolved doesn't change the reality.

I have to agree. Its very frustrating to because i'm still frowned apon by uninformed people.
I took a step up and actually doing the right thing, but are still classified and associated with smokers.
Its very much on my mind now as i'm going on a trip next week where different smokers corners awaits me. Not looking forward to stinking of smoke every time I get out of there.
I guess the upside is i'll attract attention in there and maybe meet some potential converts...

Atlanta has smoking lounges. Denver has one bar.

St. Louis is my local. They used to have one on every concourse! I think they got enough complaints about the smell in the area to shut em down. That deal in Denver is still operational, huh? That was a kickback operation if there ever was one. I seem to remember some investigation activity when we were in Ft. Collins.

Don't know for sure. I haven't flown through Denver in about 6 years. I was smoking then and I braved it, but even as a smoker it was foul and disgusting. Kind of had to crawl to see anything because the smoke was just so dense. Thar just dripping off of the filters. Gross!

I flew just last month through Atlanta. I did stop and one of the smoking lounges to have a vape. Not so disgusting is Denver but not exactly a pleasant experience either. Needless to say I took about three poles and got that bleep bleep bleep out of there.

I don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke, even in a confined space. I've had people smoke in my car since I switched to vaping and did not ask them not to. It did happen once that two people smoked at the same time, and in that case I had to ask them to avoid that because it was just too smoky for me.

Ultimately it's your decision. I don't think you would be a hypocrite if you would have explained to your friend that it was hard on you because you had not smoked for a while. You could offer to make smoke stops, or whatever is appropriate. I think he would understand. I don't want to become 'that guy' who is zealously antismoking after quitting either. That would IMO be hypocritical, but your situation is different. Also, now that you know how it affects you you can be upfront and warn smokers about it before the trip starts and decide how to handle it then. It should be a win-win situation with both of you being comfortable.

I always vape with the smokers when I get the chance. I've made a couple of converts over the years, and they are also a fun bunch to hang with

Couldn't agree more.
Upstairs, we're still wired to be smokers...similar to those that hasn't ditched it...yet.

I work from home now, so don't get the chance to join them anymore as in the past.
You talk to them about vaping, or wait for them to show interest?

Proper etiquette is for them to ask before lighting. If they ignore that, or in your case since you've made a life change, it's on you to inform them of the new rules or to live with the old ones. Etiquette doesn't require you to allow it or forbid it, just to be polite when informing them.

Chances are that if they're a good friend and they knew that it was bothering you but you were overlooking it to be polite, they would likely feel badly about that and stop doing it voluntarily.
