And Rocketpunk, I NEVER claimed to be ignorant of Star Trek. There is nothing wrong with being a scifi fan. There is, however, a lot wrong with writing fanfic (which you seem to know about too :p ). Also, no, I don't own a tech manual, lol.

Fanfic can be a cathartic action, as long as Spock is not making out with Kirk.

The way I see it, if you're going to write a story, create all of it. These characters have already been made and are good enough to captivate millions of people, so they should be studied, not mimicked or blatantly ripped off. I have 2 novels going right now. One is set now and is full of sex, drugs and violence. The world it takes place in is the world we're all sitting in, so I wrote an outline and started pumping out prose. Good scifi is much, much harder to pull off.

The second novel is set 3500 years in the future and I have been working on it for longer than the first book because I had to build an entire universe. All the rules are different, so I designed everything from clothing styles to housing, spaceships to religions, daily life and people's ambitions. I'm hoping to put questions in the minds of my readers about things we see as real (like money, time, and what we really are to this universe). My working folder (in the industry, it's called a series bible) is longer than the novel I'm writing and I have yet to start writing the story. It has been so rewarding I think I may spend the rest of my career in that world. After having done that, I cannot look at fanfic any other way than taking the easy way out and using someone else's work to tell a tale hellishly embedded in an established canon.

I'm not knocking fanfic itself, since most of the writers that work on TV shows and movies started that way, it's just I want real and true, honest creativity, not what someone thinks would be "cool."

I like the term vaping / vape / vaper
Can't wait for dictionaries to make it an official entry
Distinguishes the behavior from smoking / cigarettes
Inspires me to write things like the following (alt lyrics to "Heartache Tonight" by The Eagles)

Somebody's gonna vape something
Before the night is through
Somebody's gonna let it steep.
There's nothin' we can do.
Everybody wants to puff some juice
If it takes all night.
Everybody wants to vape a little batt,
Make it come out right.

There's gonna be a cart vaped tonight,
A cart vaped tonight, I know.
There's gonna be a cart vaped tonight,
A cart vaped tonight, I know.
Lord, I know.

With so much juice on the ECF
It's kinda hard choosin' which one I'll try next
But I, somehow, someway
Keep comin' up with new things to vape like ev'ry single day

If it's one of my storms, I say "electric cigarette", if it's the ProVari, I say "electronic cigarette". Where I am at (for the moment,) people are very familiar with e-cigs: they're in all the stores here, so my angle when people here ask about it is to tell them that it's just a bigger and better version of what they've become accustomed to seeing behind the counter in *many* of the stores here.

I generally don't have any cause to use the words "vape" or "vaping", except as a (seemingly when I say it, but actually not) humorous response to someone who insists that I am "smoking" - how amused I am that they think I am has an inversely linear relationship with how much they intend to hassle me for "smoking".

I don't think that the v-words are either cool or dumb, but I'm much more likely to say that I'm going to "use my electronic cigarette" than "have a vape".

On the forums and in my head, I use vape. Around family, I usually say puff and I call my PV my detonator. "I'm going to go puff on my detonator." Probably just as dorky-sounding, though.

Do you have one of those MadVapes AA boxes with the big red button on it? I would be leery of using one of those in public because witha carto attached, it does look like a detonator.

I have a issue with the term E-cigarette. It is not a cigarette and I'm not e-mailing it I'm puffing on it...I'm too old to be hip, but vapeing seems to be what I'm doing. But ill admit it a vaporizer to me is some kind of science fiction ray gun....,or one of the water and Vicks vapor rub plug in the wall mist machines my mom put in my room when I had a cold as a child

Ha, Ha, great post.

I'm pretty sure the ecig community didn't come up with the word vape.....it's been used by another community for years before e cigs came along.....people in California,Washington and Colorado know what I mean.

I'm ok with vape....I'm not a fan of the term "e cigarette" too many negative connotations. Now, FOG MACHINE is right on the money :)

Let me put it this way. I think it is the most obvious and logical term to use...

...but I'm going to feel like a dork telling somebody who's never heard of e-cigs that I'm "vaping."

you can say vaporizing, thats the word that vaping came from.

you may think you sound like a dork, but i dont. the correct term for our exhaled clouds is vapor. plain and simple. its the most accurate term we have. think about the first person to say sandwich. im sure they thought they sounded like a dork too, but now nobody thinks anything of it. it would be a hassle to call a meal between two pieces of bread anything but a sandwich; the same is true of our vaporizing habit.

Funny, I was just thinking about this topic a few hours ago. I'm a noob with a family who is VERY supportive of my vaping but I do feel like a dork using the word "vaping" around them. My thoughts are this: PV seems silly. Personal vaporizer. As opposed to what? A public vaporizer? Why do we add "personal"? Does it mean something I, as a noob, don't follow? Or is it just more words for the point of adding more words? I think NV is better, Nicotine vaporizer. I'm not a fan of "mods" either. I have little experience with mods in this form but from what I can tell not much is being modified. If you mod a car your taking a car and making a change to improve it beyond factory. its still the same car and easily recognized as the same car. The mods I see are not mods at all. They are custom built NV. The only thing being used is the delivery system. Just the atty is the same but the rest is completely custom built. Fine if you want to take a ego and alter it to improve it and call it a mod. Now take a mag lite flashlight and stick an atty on top and you custom built a NV, you didn't mod anything. As far as "vaping" goes, I'm stuck there. I can't think of anything better so I will continue to use it. The next closest thing that describe what we're doing is "misting" and that definitely sounds like something a vag would do.
