I've been thinking that I need to downsize on STUFF. Find stuff to send home with my niece when she is down next month...sell some stuff on ebay.

Well, I came across my late brother's collection of Bosson character heads. At first I thought that I could part with them. But once I started sorting and cataloging them, I knew that I could never, ever part with them. (I've only gone through about 40 of them and there are probably that many more yet to go through.)

Going through them just flooded my mind with memories...of finding a new one for him (he was always so hard to buy for), being mad at him when he started a gift shop and bought them for himself at trade shows, laughing at his step-grandkids when they were little and didn't want to be in the same room as the heads (these heads are very detailed...you expect them to start talking to you any moment), being happy that I was the one to inherit them.

Ahhh, memories of our lost loved ones...bittersweet, for sure.

I have been doing that with Mom's things..trying to sort junk from important stuff. I keep finding things that trigger memories! I found notes from my sister to both me and Mom (she's been gone for since 1986) I found letters, and legal transactions signed by my dad, grandpa and grandma. On and on. It's been a hard job.

I remember sorting through my mother's belonging. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.

It was admitting to myself that she was never coming back and I didn't want to acknowledge that. I was afraid I would forget what she looked like after a while but her face is still so very clear in my memory. She has been gone 19 years and I still miss her.

I wish I had spent more time with her while I had the chance.

Sheesh, as I was scrolling down this thread I noticed that I said that my mom has been gone 50 years. CORRECTION: 40 -- I never was good at math, lol.

Was sorting more things today and ran across the box of my mother's hankies. Wow, were those things made to last! I laundered them and then IRONED them (first ironing I've done in a long while). Now I know why everyone loved the invention of tissues!!!

But, you know, it does seem a little sad that they aren't popular anymore. They're neat to look at...all kinds of printed flowers, some with scalloped edges, some with embroidery or crochet work. (Wonder what children of today will look back on with nostalgia?)

Messing with these reminded me of my sister-in-law too (she's been gone for several years too). My brother always used handkerchiefs but Rosie hated ironing them. So on laundry day, you walk into their kitchen to see the handkerchiefs plastered on the refrigerator. I don't recall, but she must have used starch on them to get them to adher to the refrigerator. They dried just as though they'd been ironed.

Strangely enough, the smell of Juicy Fruit gum brings back more memories of my Grandmother than anything else. She would buy the bags of 10 packs of gum and keep them in her underwear drawer so she always smelled like Juicy Fruit. Whenever I smell it it's like getting a big hug from her. She died when I was in 5th grade, but the time I got to spend with her was some of the most special time in my childhood.
