That is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. Why aren't comments allowed? Sales are already restricted. Seeing cigarettes in stores doesn't prompt you to start smoking. If you're enough of an idiot to believe that cigarettes are candy because they're next to eachother, you'll figure it out once you open the box.

I can't imagine BT will take this one sitting down. Or the c-store association, grocery association.

I'm afraid that grocery stores have bigger problems right now than tobacco sales. They are really worried about the mandatory $15 minimum wage.

Whole Foods is already replacing workers with robots. No more butchers, fishmongers, produce people... Just keypads, folks!

Whole Foods' 365: Where Kiosks Replace Workers - Breitbart

"As a naïve 25-year–old with a pony tail, Mackey wanted to offer shoppers an alternative to “evil” profit-seeking corporations. But he quickly found that customers were complaining that his prices were too high, workers complaining that they weren’t being paid enough, and government regulators were smacking him with fees, fines, and taxes.

In his book “Conscious Capitalism, Inc.,” Mackey reveals that he lost over 50 percent of his $45,000 investment, before rejecting socialism and renaming the store Whole Foods. “My worldview underwent a massive shift.” He adds, I had become a businessperson and a capitalist, and I had discovered that business and capitalism, while not perfect, were both fundamentally good and ethical.”"

Yeah, maybe not grocery stores, cigarettes aren't really a lead in item for them. C-stores and gas stations though... As the guy said in the article, people come in for smokes and buy other items because they're there.

Also, the whole premise is ridiculous. Are we going to become one of those states where you have to go to the state run liquor store next?

The whole thing is just so stupid, Les, that I have no words left. In case you missed my link earlier:

Yeah, I saw that and followed it a little when it happened. I knew they would take a hit, I know I stopped filling prescriptions there. I also know that I've never gone to a cvs unless I needed a) a prescription filled or b) smokes and they were the closest store.

I don't get my wellness from a convenience store. Plus, rite aid has thrifty's ice cream. Chocolate malted crunch FTW!

One simple Word... Why?

Of course, it's the same old excuse:

“This is a huge step forward in protecting California’s children because 90 percent of smokers start before they are age 18,” Wieckowski said in a statement.

First, where did the 90% come from? I sure the statistic came during a bathroom stall visit. It seems much data is gathered this way from that side of the fight.

I started before I was 18 (the '70s). The ice cream truck that used to wait for us after junior high was where we all bought our cigarettes when we were about 14 or so.

My point is, it didn't matter where cigs were sold. If a kid is going to try tobacco - or a vapor product for that matter, they will do it.

This may be a shock to some - In high school, we had a school approved smoking area where we were allowed to smoke. The metal shop class made ashtrays for us! If I remember correctly, only the upper grades (11th & 12th) were allowed to use the smoking area. The idea was that some students would smoke anyway, and this way they could keep from having butts all over campus.

Wow, times have changed...

Maybe it's just me, but I find it irritating when people attempt to attach human qualities to ideas, businesses, etc., in an effort to boost their own business over others. Businesses are not fundamentally good or ethical (or evil), and it's up to the people who run the business to run the business in a manner that meets the customers' requirements (quality, safety, price point), and if they do it well, they will make a profit. Morals and ethics are qualities of the humans running the business, not qualities of the business itself.

Very Well Put.
