I had someone recently come around and tell me that vaping a 24 mg e-juice is just as harmful as smoking a pack a day. This sounds like total bs to me as I've spent a fair amount of time scouring the internet and looking at scientific studies on e-cigs (I'm a chemistry major who works at a vapor shop - this is what I do in my spare time lol). I have not yet seen a single study claiming this. The woman didn't really explain to me how it was as bad either. Does anyone have any idea what she was talking about? Was there a scare article published about this that anyone can recall or a popular news article that was likely misinterpreted? Basically, is there the slightest shred of evidence to what she said?

The big problem with smoking is the tar, smoke particles, and carbon monoxide.
It's not much to do with tobacco or nicotine.

If you smoke something else, you get the same problem of smoke particles, and carbon monoxide.

People say all kinds of things without any real knowledge or evidence. I don't know exactly what was meant by that statement but I suspect it was something she picked up from the anti vaping crowd.

It's hard to hurt yourself with e-juice unless you drink a lot or get concentrated nicotine solution on your skin and don't wash it off right away. Drinking e-juice would probably cause vomiting.

Nicotine is a poison but the concentrations used in e-juice aren't dangerous. There is no evidence that nicotine causes cancer.

Yes, it doesn't make any sense. She was talking about how she uses 18 mg because of this. Even if she were talking strictly about the nicotine level, let's assume that a regular box of cigarettes has about 24 mg of nicotine in it total. You'd have to smoke a full pack or more (since I'm not sure how much nicotine actually gets into your system as a result of smoking) to get the same amount of nicotine as in 1 mL of the aforementioned e-juice. Yet, I can vape several mLs a day without getting the same horrible side effects I'd get from smoking a whole pack of cigs.

You guys are right though - she was probably under the impression that nicotine is what causes all the problems associated with smoking rather than the multitude of other chemicals involved. At least now I can somewhat understand her (flawed) reasoning. I was utterly speechless when she was originally claimed this because it was so ridiculous that I had no idea what she was talking about or how to respond. I will keep this information in mind for when I see her next though.

There is new shop in my town and when I went in and asked for 36mg juice he gasped and said "36 mg is like selling pure poison". He stated he only sells up to 18 mg. I found a online store that sells up to 48 mg. This guy is probably afraid of getting sued if some little kid with worthless parents was sickened or killed by drinking high dose juice.

Just for fun, I tried dripping 18mg in my Derringer at 40 watts today.... it's pretty stout lol. Made my throat burn a bit. 12mg is my upper limit on my Derringer at the moment, normally I use 6mg. From what I understand, it's almost impossible to over do it with nicotine. Your body will stop you long before you get to a dangerous point.

Those things are worse than cigarettes.

There... you heard it from me, it must be true. I heard it from a couple of people over the past winter. So I'm sure its true.

The power of propaganda

Worst part is this person was trying to "educate" me and an older lady. I was trying not to be rude and dismiss her outright but it seemed like such blatant nonsense.
